Benita Nzeribe started out as a teen star in Nollywood and later grew into adulthood long before the industry started experiencing the boom it now enjoys. Though quick to say she got into the industry by accident, the light-complexioned beau has carved a niche for herself. That is why her endorsement as Ambassador for two separate institutions is not a surprise. In this interview, she talks about her career, endorsements and refutes the rumour making the rounds that she has a love child.

It seems your love for acting has vanished ?

How do you mean ? I’m still and will remain an actress.

But you’ve been away from the big screen for some time now. What have you been up to ?

I was really not away . One thing about entertainment is that no one ever leaves it . I have been around and I’m active. I do jobs that come my way but I am a very patient person and not swayed at all . I have not been away from the big screen. I just have a different project and responsibility on my shoulders and I’m moving on by the grace of God .

What are some of those projects you’re currently handling ?

As you very well know, I am a UN Peace Ambassador and as such stand for world peace . Ambassadors work towards peace from the grassroots. Personally, I am more convinced than ever before that there should be peace in the inner mind of every human being created by God. Sadly, not every human being has been able to discover that inner mind and access the peace that is much needed for its growth and development for success .

World peace is still a tall order in our world today. However, nothing is impossible with God . I shall continue to call on Him for strength and direction as I pursue this awesome assignment. World peace must be achieved to an impressive percentage .

Secondly, as the Air Safety Ambassador of Nigeria which was bestowed on me by the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), there is also a job to do . The aviation sector has recorded huge achievements under this present administration . Furthermore, I will be on location in less than two weeks from now for the shoot of their international classic TV commercial, It’s a big project; I can tell you that .

Also, I am presently recording the Malta Guinness Low Sugar Game show with Emeka Enyiocha as my co-presenter . It’s hitting the screen soon and I can tell you, it’s going to be a great show . I will be on location immediately after the NAMA TVC and thereafter, I will embark on an official trip out of the country as NAMA Ambassador .

How did you secure all these deals?

Well, let’s say that it’s God at work and the fruits of my labour as an actress

On the UN Ambassadorship, I was called upon to come and receive it. The fact that I grew from a teenager to an adult in Nollywood and have contributed to the growth of the industry and written my name in gold opened those doors for me .

So you must be swimming in money now ?.

Swimming in money? Hmm. Well, I have always believed in sacrifice first before reaping, and that has worked out well for me. God has been putting smiles on my face little by little. I must appreciate Him for that. But swimming in money? Not yet.

So what was growing up like for you?

Growing up was fun because I have disciplined parents. I went to a Convent school and I think that explains how I came about my disciplined self.

Could you share with us some of those boring experiences you had while growing?

All I can remember is that all the partying that has to do with teens was never part of my experience. But I guess, it helped me to keep disciplined till date.

Do you regret not being allowed to enjoy your childhood days?

I don’t feel like I missed out at all. In fact, it’s rare to see me in a night club because I have been fashioned that way. It’s not like I’m saying it’s wrong to party, everyone should just do whatever makes them happy.

Since you attended a Convent school, how did you come about acting?

My getting into acting was never planned. My debut role in ‘Beyond Our Dreams’ was just meant to be.

So, acting was an accidental thing for you. What were you doing before acting?

I was in school then. So, my girlfriend and I came to Lagos for holidays in my elder brother’s house, Hon.Chuma Nzeribe. One day, we decided to just stroll around for sight seeing and we stumbled on an audition for a soap. We wanted to just see what they were up to and why so many people gathered there. It was curiosity and one thing led to another. I was called upon to be tried because they were actually searching for that character of a female lead. I was auditioned and the rest is history.

I heard you wanted to be a Reverend Sister?

That’s not true. I just went to a Convent school because my father believed there is more discipline and a better quality of education there. I didn’t attend the school because I was aspiring to be a Reverend Sister.

So, weren’t your parents disappointed that you chose acting after the discipline and values instilled in you at the Convent school?

There was nothing to feel disappointed about. It’s a profession just like every other one. My parents are educated so they understood that I was doing my job. I have my limits as an African woman.

What are your limits?

I can never go naked!

I overheard you calling someone ‘Daddy’ on the phone?

Ha! that was my father in the Lord, my pastor.

So, who is the lucky man?

Soon, you will find out.

Does that mean there’s a man in your life?

I’m sure you don’t expect me to have a woman in my life. Well, it’s not yet ripe to talk about that for now. But I’ll surely inform you at the right time.

How’s your daughter doing?

My daughter? Which daughter? Where is the daughter and from whom? This is really funny, and the first time ever a journalist will be asking me about a daughter. I have none for now but will definitely get one once I’m married. Don’t be in a hurry.

But we learnt that you’re a single mother

Wow! I’m not, please. That’s definitely not true. Why would I hide my blood from anyone if I had a daughter? Children are blessings from God so I would flaunt her to the world if I did. Relax, I will soon get there by God’s Grace. People saying that should take a chill pill and wait.

Stylaay: Dis problem transcends beyond security agents or govt. It lies in the ability of the plateau and fulani folks to sit down and genuinely discuss. They need to ensure their is genuine reconcilation. The fulanis who have been known to avenge the death of animals with human lives have to have a serious rethink as this is unacceptable in the 21st century. He they still have this mindset they will eventually have no place of abode in nigeria and would soon be extinct. The radio which is the fulani's source of news should be explored and used to re-orientate the fulani normad. I pity the hapless plateau farmers who have been turned to refugees on thier own soil

TOKYO (AFP) – A suspected knifeman who attacked three elementary school children in broad daylight on a Tokyo street was being held by police on Friday after a rare incidence of violence in low-crime Japan, reports said.

The three children — two six years old and one seven years old —received cuts during the attack outside their school in the northwest of the capital around 2:00 pm (0500 GMT), Japan’s public broadcaster NHK said.

The channel said a man aged around 30 had been seen running away after the incident.

None of the victims were seriously hurt, the broadcaster said.

Japan has one of the lowest rates of violent crime in the developed world, and random attacks involving weapons of any kind are highly unusual

ASABA — A 39-year-old lady serving as a personal secretary to a professor at the Delta State University, DELSU, Abraka has been arrested for sending a malicious text message to her boss to pay her N100,000 as ‘settlement’ for having amorous relationship with her or be ready to face public scandal.

Parading the lady (names withheld), yesterday, in Asaba, the state Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Mr. Lucky Uyabeme, said she was picked up following a report lodged “by a Professor of Faculty of Fine Arts, DELSU, Abraka who reported that he received a threat text message from an unknown person demanding N100,000 to avoid defamatory publication on him.

“However, through intelligence policing, special anti-kidnapping squad operatives based at Obiaruku tracked and arrested the personal secretary to the professor.”

Fielding questions from newsmen, the suspect who was weeping profusely said: “I did not do anything. My crime is that I am sleeping with a married man. The Prof is my boyfriend. I asked him for N100,000 or I would make it known to the public that we were dating. I wanted to end the relationship and use the money as a pay-off.

“We have been dating for two years now. I run a boutique and a business centre in Abraka. I am also the private secretary to the professor.

“He has not been paying. I did not want to blackmail him . I did not mean any harm when I sent the text message. I never expected it was going to be like this. I felt because we were dating he would give me the money.”

I ‘m not guilty, he says

BY Austin Ogwuda Asaba—A 27-year-old graduate of Accountancy from Delta State Polytechnic, Ogwashi-Uku, Mr. Philip Urieh, was yesterday arraigned before an Asaba Chief Magistrate’s court on a four-count charge of impersonating Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan of Delta State on the social networking site, Facebook, thereby defrauding some unsuspecting members of the public.

The charges read: that you, Philip Onos Urieh (male) and others at large sometime in January 2013 at Asaba in the Asaba magisterial district, conspired among yourselves to commit a felony to wit, defrauding members of the public by impersonating Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, Governor of Delta State and thereby committed an offence punishable under sections 422 and 516 of the Criminal Code Law cap C.21 volume I, Laws of Delta State of Nigeria, 2006.

That you Philip Onos Urieh (male) sometime in January 2013 at Asaba in the Asaba magisterial district obtained by fake pretence the sum of N562,000 from one Alex Roy Omoni.

The sum of N2.8 million from one Felix Usih and the sum of N200,000 from one Jerry Odugula and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 419 of the criminal code law cap. C.21, volume 1, laws of Delta State of Nigeria, 2006.

That you, Philip Onos Urieh (male) sometime in January 2013 at Asaba in the Asaba magisterial district cheated Alex Roy Omoni, Felix Usih and Jerry Odugula of their monies by fraudulently tricking them to believe that you would link them up with the Delta State governor and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 421 of the criminal code law cap C.21 volume 1, laws of Delta State of Nigeria 2006.

That you, Philip Onos Urieh (male) sometime in January 2013 at Asaba in the Asaba magisterial district impersonated Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, governor of Delta State with intent to defraud and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 484 of the criminal code law cap 2.21 volume I, Laws of Delta State of Nigeria, 2006.

He pleaded not guilty to all the count charges and was, however, admitted on bail with stringent conductions.

He is to provide N500,000 plus a surety, who would either be in the local government, state or federal service, and not less than level 16.

The surety, according to the court, must swear to an affidavit of means, submit two passport photographs and also produce his pay slip.

Nigeria has received a total of N2.08 trillion ($13 billion) from international donor agencies under the Country Assistance Framework, CAF, as at the end of 2012, according to a report on CAF programme for the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

According to the report sighted by Vanguard, the fund was invested in key sectors of the economy, ranging from agriculture, water and sanitation, governance, environment, infrastructure, human development among others.

The international donor agencies which constitute CAF are: World Bank, African Development Bank, International Monetary Fund, United States Agency for International Development,Canadian International Development Agency, Embassy of Japan.

Others are Embassy of China, European Union, High Commission of India, Japan International Cooperation Agency, United Nations System and Agence Francaise de Development.

A breakdown of the distribution of the funds shows that Agriculture received $1.33 billion, water sanitation — $1.795 billion, governance-$1.89 billion, infrastructure-$3.72 billion, human development -$3.131billion , multi-sector $15.74 million, private $553.15 million and environment -$540 million .

According to the report, the lack of official data at state level, with harmonized definitions and classifications comparable to those for the federal government is an issue which the country needs to tackle.

This further complicates the formulation of fiscal policy and the monitoring of its implementation at different levels of government.

On the risk and migration strategies in Nigeria, the report noted that there are several risks to the CAF’s implementation, including insecurity, a politically fluid situation leading to the 2015 elections, vested interests, regional instability, as well as economic volatility related to the fluctuation of oil prices.

It added that it also aims to be candid about identified risks and their impact – direct or indirect – on its implementation and states that the most important risk pertains to the security which remains challenging.

On the lingering global financial crisis, the international donor agencies also affirmed that Nigeria made a major step in responsible macroeconomic management by creating the Excess Crude Account, ECA, as a fiscal reserve fund in 2004 which was subsequently used to finance a fiscal stimulus package that maintained economic demand and rapid growth.

However, they noted that the remaining institutional vulnerabilities surrounding the ECA which surfaced visibly when political pressures led to excessive ad hoc withdrawals from the ECA, places Nigeria’s reserve position and financial stability at risk.

The States Governors Forum is also part of what CAF seeks to support as a state-level platform for dissemination of knowledge and experience and provision of flexible support to strengthen the capacity of state-level systems.

ABUJA — Justice Peter Kekemeke of an Abuja High Court has ordered the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar to arrest the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Mr Ibrahim Lamorde, for disobeying a valid court order.

Justice Kekemeke directed that the EFCC boss and an operative of the anti-graft agency, Mr Friday Ebelo, should be apprehended and kept in prison custody within the next two weeks, except they apologize to a lawyer whose fundamental human rights were allegedly violated by the commission.

Meantime, EFCC, yesterday, vowed to appeal the ruling.

Reacting to the order, spokesman of the commission, Mr Wilson Uwujaren, who acknowledged that a copy of the order was served on the agency, said EFCC has perfected plans to get it vacated.

The court had on March 8 and December 5, 2012, ordered Lamorde to release the call-to-bar certificate of one Mr Innocent Onwu, apologize to him through a national newspaper as well as pay him N50, 000 as compensation.

Onwu who is an Abuja-based lawyer had on October 31, 2011, initiated a fundamental rights enforcement proceeding after he was detained by the EFCC between June 27 and July 1, 2011 without order of court.

His detention was sequel to a petition by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, accusing him of complicity in fraud pertaining to a case he was investigating for a client.

Dissatisfied with the way he was allegedly manhandled by the commission, Onwu demanded N300 million as compensation for the unlawful search of his house and office and the trauma he suffered in the hands of the EFCC.

Besides, the lawyer, claimed his ailing mother was admitted at the Garki General Hospital on the day he was arrested by the EFCC, insisting that despite his passionate pleas, the commission refused to release him to attend to his mother, resulting to her death three days later.

The court had on June 4 and June 24 this year, dismissed two applications filed by the EFCC counsel, Mr James Onu, wherein he sought to void the contempt proceeding.
