The Nigerian Military is a terrorist organization who has been killing indigenous people in their tens of thousands in recent history. The continuous marginalization of the Ogu (Egun) people of South-West Nigeria is common knowledge. The late sage and Premier of the then Western Region, Chief Obafemi Awolowo has remained the reference point in leadership not only because of his selflessness and capability, but primarily because of his inclusiveness. For example, it was Chief Awolowo who appointed the Aholu, Claudius Dosa Akran from Badagry as the Minister for Economic Planning and Community Development (1958 – 1964) in the then regional government.

At the same time, Chief D. K Aihonsu (from Ipokia, present day Ogun State) was a member of the Regional House of Representatives through the support of Chief Awolowo. Since the demise of this sage (and the leadership style he represented), there have been spirited efforts to present the South-West Nigeria as a mono-ethnic region. In this vain, political representation (other than local elective posts) has largely excluded Ogu people.

For the records, Ogu people, who speak the language called Ogu (although erroneously called Egun) had been part of this space before colonization and amalgamation of the Southern and Northern Protectorates of Nigeria. The misfortune of colonization led to the partitioning of Ogu people into Nigeria, Benin Republic, Togo, Ghana, and Ivory Coast. The geographical spread of Ogu people forms a trans-border continuum in all these countries, while settling Ogu people are found in various other places in Nigeria.

To this end, Ogu people were part of the struggle for Nigeria's independence and have contributed in no small measure to national development. In today’s Nigeria, Ogu people are found mainly in Badagry area of Lagos State as well as in Ado-Odo/Ota, Ipokia, Imeko, and Yewa South Local Government Areas of Ogun State. They are found in most states that share borders with Benin Republic, including Oyo, Kwara and Niger States. In addition, there are various Ogu indigenous communities like Makoko and Iwaya in Lagos State, Ago-Egun in Abeokuta, among others.

The indigenous Ogu people of Nigeria have had their fair share of the troubles with Nigeria. The Ogu are the typical victim of ethnic crisis in South-West Nigeria. In recent times, there has been escalation of ethnic crisis between Ogu people and their majority Yoruba neighbours as often reported in Ado-Odo, Ipokia areas, and some parts of Badagry. A few years ago, Ogu people were, almost as a matter of policy, denied admission into Badagry Grammar School, Kakon Model College and other government-owned schools until sufficient pressure and protests were registered by their leaders. On account of the non-Yoruba names most of them bear (there are some who consciously and on account of accident of naming bear Yoruba names), Ogu people are still denied admission into the various tertiary institutions in South-West Nigeria today among other injustices arising from their minority status in the South-West in particular and Nigeria in general.

The situation, sadly, at times suggests a systematic intention to single out this particular ethnic group for persecution. To many, the Ogu are Nigerians only when it is time to vote. Lagos traditionally has five divisions with Badagry (comprising mainly the Ogu people and the Awori sub-ethnic group of the Yoruba) as one of these divisions. It is however worrisome that a lot of political decisions and other moves for development often exclude the Ogu as is playing out in the nomination of delegates for the forthcoming national conference.

The Ogu people had looked up to the national confab as a great opportunity to table their concerns and suggestions that will advance the Nigeria project. It was with anxious optimism that the Ogu people through the Ogu Concern Forum (and various other groups) made presentations and submitted memoranda to the Senator Femi Okurounmu-led Confab Committee when the panel visited the South West late last year. Among others things, the Ogu people canvassed for ethnic representation to the confab, just as many other groups had advised. The report that the Constitutional Conference Planning Committee ultimately presented recommended, among other things, that the selection of delegates from each state should reflect their ethnic composition. Following from the recommendations, the Ogu people had made presentations and suggestions to the Lagos and Ogun State governments to be represented at the national confab.

On Monday, February 24th 2014, Governor Fashola of Lagos released the names of the six nominee-delegates of Lagos State to the national confab -- Alhaji Femi Okunnu, Mr. Supo Shasore, Mr. Rabiu Oluwa, Mr. Waheed Ayeni, Prof Tunde Samuel and Mrs. Funmilayo Bashorun. Just as the Ogu, who were not in any way given any consideration in the choice of delegates, were grappling with the misfortune that had befallen them, the Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun also announced the names of Ogun State nominated delegates two days after to include Sir Olaniwun Ajayi, Pastor Tunde Bakare, Senator Biyi Durojaiye, Fola Adeola, Oba Kehinde Olugbenle, Mrs. Titi Filani, Barrister Biyi Adegbuyi and Senator Iyabo Anisulowo. Once again, the reality of Nigeria having a non-political national conference without Ogu people represented stares the entire South-West in the face.

The all-Yoruba delegates' lists from Lagos and Ogun States reek through and through with contradictions. Such an exclusive list has the potential of detracting from the constant claim to a progressive character with which the South-West has often been identified. Neither is such a move in consonance with the mantra of justice and fairness and a collective developmental partnership which often reverberate in this part of the country. How, for instance, could these two states with radio and television broadcasting programmes in both Yoruba and Ogu close their eyes to the existence of Ogu ethnic nationality in their choice of delegates to the National Conference? It is an established fact that, Ogu people are not Yoruba, and to that extent, the governments of the states should have been kind enough to allow for representation of the Ogu as a distinct ethnic formation in the states. Even the non-Yoruba people in Ondo (Itshekiris, Ijaws) get better treatment from the state government.

We believe it is not late to rectify this gross marginalization and injustice. We are persuaded that there should be at least one Ogu representative in the Lagos State delegates' list. We are equally persuaded that the Ogu people in Ogun State deserve at least one representative out of the eight delegates nominated by the state. We reject every suggestion that Ogu people can be represented by non-Ogu people, as not only does this smack of an attempt to infantilize Ogu people, it also amounts to malignant paternalism. We reject the persuasive distortions that tend to lump us up as Yoruba. We make bold to say that the absolutism being projected by the current leaders of South-West Nigeria is against the spirit of national dialogue.

We demand from the Nigerian State equal rights as citizens, including the right to air our grievances through the national conference. We remind all, that persistent injustice breeds agitation and resistance. We reject all suggestions that diminish our persons, our identities, our dignity and our uniqueness. We do not affirm difference for its sake; we do so because it is the least logical thing to do, seeing that we operate by distinct cultural paradigms that are framed by equally distinct historical evidence.

FYI, difference in language doesn't mean they don't have connection with the yoruba people. You keep talking about language. What about other factors, like their shared beliefs, customs and traditions, religion and even History. Why are do they bear Yoruba names if they don't regard themselves as yoruba? I repeat, Egun is not a dialect of Yoruba. Rather, it is considered a dialect of Fon. Though they've shared centuries of intermarriages and cohabitation with Yorubas in and around the Benin/Nigerian border and have borrowed a couple of things from each other, Egun still retains most of its originality. The origin of their ancestry points towards Benin/Togo border and not Eastwards into Yorubaland. The same Egun people own Porto-Novo which Yoruba people call Ajase. There are other Egun communities in Lagos and Ogun state. Ikoga-Zebbe is a well known Egun community close to the Ogun state border just north of Badadgry. As we all know, you can't find a single Yoruba word with letter 'z' because it doesn't exist in Yoruba language and all her dialects.
As for your fictitious Oyo empire, the mystery surrounding how it existed is being unraveled. There are lots of misinformation like calling Grand Popo a Yoruba state. Many people gloss over the claims of Oyo empire but anyone who's patient to go through history books will see lots of inconsistencies in its stories.
Finally, David Hundeyin is a popular Egun man that won't even look in your direction if you call him Yoruba.

As every yoruba king had its own title. From the oni of ife, the soun of Ogbomosho, the olubadan of ibadan, the oluwo of iwo etc. So if the source of yoruba itself which is the oni has a dedicated title why will the oba of badagry own be different?

Don't be deceived when you see Yoruba authors add 'Oba' to his title. They have been doing this for a very long time just to subsume the Eguns but the people are rejecting it as you can see. Although so Eguns bear Yoruba names along side their own names, they know very well the difference. Anywhere you see a traditional leader among the Eguns having the title 'Oba' attached to it, check the author of that article. It must have been written by a Yoruba person. Thank God many Ogus(Eguns) are challenging it today.

As for your fictitious Oyo empire, they never got anywhere close to Ghana. The farthest they got to is Atakpame, in today's Togo. The Ogus are closer to the trio of Fon, Aja and Ewes of Togo. Yorubas can't claim them. This is a topic I know so well.

Since the end of the war in 1970, there have been ceaseless and desperate attempts by federal Nigeria and the main beneficiaries of the unfortunate outcome of the war who reside in the South West and the north, to balkanize the former Eastern Nigeria. This has been done through all sorts of measures, including nebulous state creations and tricky boundary adjustments, that have carved out many Igbo communities at the peripheries, and handed them over as minorities to surrounding non Igbo speaking states.

These acts have led to a lot of marginalisations, segregations and taunts directed towards these set of Igbos. It has also led to a situation where the five South Eastern states have been neglected and deprived of deu royalties, allocations, appointments and all what not from the federal government. For instance in every project for development or sharing of resources in Nigeria, the South East states ALWAYS come last. ALL THE TIME! SINCE 1966!!!

Recently, An attempt by the Igbos in Delta state to have a new state created for them and to join their kiths and kins in the South East, instigated a firestorm as many people especially from the ruling South West section of the APC, insisted that there are no indigenous Igbos in the Niger Delta. Even when these interlopers were reminded of the language and other cultural similarities between the Igbo speaking parts of the Niger Delta and the Igbos in the South East, they stuck to their guns.

My questions here are; since this view is popular in the South West, can we stretch the diabolical logic behind it by saying that the Aworis and Eguns are not Yorubas, especially now that these groups are desperately angling for a breathing space in Lagos their homeland? Since most interior Yorubas can't even understand whatever the Aworis speak, while most Igbos can easily understand the Ika dialect, can we insist that Lagos is not a Yoruba state but an Aworis and Eguns state, the same way some South westerners want us to believe that Ikwerres and Ikas are not Igbos but "Niger Deltans"?

Aworis are debatably Yorubas but the Egun who call themselves Ogu people are not Yorubas. They are closer to the Fon speakers of Benin republic than Yorubas. Their language isn't even Yoruboid but the intonation is similar to Yoruba intonation. The king of Badagry, an Ogu man bears the title 'Akran' and not 'Oba'. The Ogu history is well documented. They can be found in South Eastern Benin republic, Lagos and Ogun states. A good number of the Ogu people in Nigeria are bilingual in Ogu and Yoruba but they're not Yoruba or a yoruboid group.
One key thing to identifying a Yoruboid group is the absence of the alphabet 'z' in their language or dialect.

Comparing the Ika and Ikwerre situation towards the SE Igbos as similar to the Egun/Yoruba connection is totally wrong. The others are pure dialects of Igbo while Egun isn't a dialect of Yoruba.

However the ijaws have been in what is modern day Rivers state far longer than the Igbo’s have. History can attest to this fact, the first mentions of Igbo’s in what is now known as old rivers state was them being sold and shipped as slaves.

The main reason we have some Igbo speakers is because we had slave markets, slave barracoons, slave warehouses, in Modern day Rivers state and Delta state, upon abolition of slave trade those slaves refused to return home to Igbo land where they were seen as ghosts, osu etc. Go and read about the long juju of Arochukwu abi the long god of Arochukwu, read about the Aro Confederacy.

Sad to say but Igbo’s were nothing special you were commodities we sold. After the abolition and British sailing the seas intercepting and diverting slave ships business tanked people started focusing on other things Manila, palm, fish, imports of foreign wares etc. Do you think all the Igbo slaves left in the warehouses (barracoons), slave dungeons, sea port and the ones of ships turned back were killed?

What I said can be verified by dna Test and History. I myself have taken my heritage Dna test and had it analyzed for African heritage what I saw was largely Bini and I am from Rivers state others from rivers who have taken similar tests also have come out with similar results infact I had some Yoruba but absolutely no Igbo. Here's a simple question for you. Asari Dokubo always said his ancestor came from Abam, in Abia state. His grandfather was the king of Buguma shortly before the Biafran war and lost it because of his support for Biafra. Was his ancestor also a slave brought to Kalabari area? There are many others like Asari in Kalabari who are not known but they know their ancestry.
In the history of Elem Kalabari, there's no single mention of Bini or any Edoid elements. It's only Efik, Igbo and Ijoid. Efik eventually fizzled away.
Bonny and Opobo are more of Igbo than Ijoid. The killings that the 3rd Marine Commando did in Bonny to silence the people of their Igbo ancestry is well known.
Only the Ogonis appear to be like a mystery in that area. There language is totally unique among the rest.

Ogonis have four lgas but only one(Eleme) has some of them bearing Igbo names.
Kalabari has three lgas. It's rare to find anyone of them bearing Igbo names but some (few) understand and speak Igbo. In this area, Ijoid is mostly spoken with an edoid language in Degema and Usokun towns.
Ubani (Bonny and Opobo) has two lgas. Some bear Igbo names and most speak Igbo. Ijoid language is also spoken there.
Okrika has two lgas (Okrika and Ogu/Bolo). Some bear Igbo names and many speak Igbo. Igbo, Ijoid and Obulom(very small) languages are spoken in this area
Obolo (Andoni lga) rarely bear Igbo names but you can find a few. I've met one myself. They speak mostly the Obolo language which is closer to Cross River languages.
Abua/Odual lga rarely bear Igbo names but you can find a few. They speak most the Abua and Odual languages which is a Central Delta language under the same category as ex-president Goodluck Jonathan's language known as Ogbia.
Ahoada West lga is spiltted between Igboid/Ijoid and Edoid. This is Burnaboy's lga. Some bear Igbo names especially from the Ekpeye side. The same Ekpeyes own the whole Ahoada East lga. This is fmr.Dep.Speaker. Fed. HOR Chibudom Nwuche's lga.
The rest all bear Igbo names and speak various Igbo dialects.
If you do a proper calculation, you'll get at least 65% of Rivers State that speak and understand Igbo.
It may interest you to know that at least 15% of Bayelsa understand Igbo language but the indigenous Igbos are smaller than that figure.

There are indigenous Igbos in 13 states of Nigeria. Kogi and Benue in the North Central, all the South South states and then the South East states.
