Christianity EtcRe: Nigerians And Christians Are Scary! by Zahymaka(m): 11:30am On Jul 17, 2006
My parents are exceptionally liberal. They only insist that I acknowledge the presence of a higher power. I've been encouraged to delve into the literature of other religions and to analyze the good and the bad, which is why I wasn't surprised at the Da Vinci Code, no matter the outcry.

Generally, I believe everyone is entitled to their opinion except it's that I follow their ideals. I've had people hate me because I don't think the way they do -- and that's very prevalent in Nigeria. Just say you don't hate homos or that you'll marry a muslim and you'll lose some 'friends.' My aunt, for example, hates Igbos even though her most trusted friend is one [she makes an exception there].

I had a lot of muslim friends in Nigeria - my best friend was one. His parents were very enlightened and his mother treated me like her son the one time I went there, which isn't something you'll say of most Christians.

Nigerians, especially the Christian are too agressive in their evangelism. I might be sounding like I love muslims and hate Christians but I hardly meet Christians who believe in living and letting live. You can go to the North and see wherec hristians set up 'shop' in a predominantly muslim area and fix 'foghorns' to the outside of their shacks, disturbing the neighborhood.

When the people complain, they say the 'Holy Ghost fire' is disturbing their sleep. Down South, it's almost a crime to be a muslim in any school. I could go on. . .

I think I'd like my first girlfriend to be Asian. My friend's friend is dating an Asian and they've been together for more than three years. That should tell you something [he's white].

I'm not saying it's easy but barriers can always be broken.

I've met both LNG workers and Shell workers, and I can attest that LNG workers 'enjoy' more.

Let me tell you what happens in these oil companies. They pay you according to the Nigerian market or they'd have a string of Nigerian millionaires. People'd just walk in, stay for five years and then leave.

These foreign companies definitely will not pay according to what is earned back home because of the different markets. I ffor example, you netted $50,000 per year [dismal for an oil worker by American standards], you'd get about 6.5 million Naira per year which isn't too good for the economy [there'd be too much money in circulation].

LNG's activities are really restricted to Bonny and they pay heavily because of the risks.

Now, are you suggesting because Shell pays their workers a certain amount, LNG shouldn't be able to pay more? Trust me, they can afford it. There's a lot of profit here -- cheap labour, lots of sulfur-free oil and imagine what they make when it's shipped to other parts of the world. . .

thats so pretty thanks grin

but what does that mean.
If I'm interpreting correctly, it means literally, 'The Eye of God.' but it could mean 'Someone dear to God' figuratively.
CareerRe: Best Paying Company In Nigeria? by Zahymaka(m): 5:14am On Jul 17, 2006
When I left Nigeria, oil companies paid the most. Somebody's slightly off the mark:

There's some debate as to which of Chevron or LNG pays more so I'll put them at the top. After that is Shell, then any others.

That's a very stereotypical thread. Are you wilshelby? If so then you haven't attacked the root of the problem.

In most African countries, women are expected to be modest and our media doesn't carry such overtly sexual depictions of the female sex.

The mindset of most Africans who move over to the US and other 'sexually enlightened' nations is that sex is cheap and free. Until recently, most people who dress suggestively in Africa [by African standards] are taken to be good lays, so it's not a wonder the guy acted on those instincts. Most African ladies are not too friendly with the malefolk but it's quite different here in the US.

If a lady sees a guy she likes and approaches him to say hi and make some small-talk, the African man would mos t likely assume she's interested in sex, here or anywhere else.

Like I said, the lady who posted the topic in question appears to be carrying an Anti-African message. Perhaps she and the people mixing with Africans only mix with the non-intellectual nuts.

By the way, she was talking about 'Africans' and not any particular nationality. When will this ignorance about Africa stop? I'm sure they'd hardly call an English, French or German man European, or would they?
ProgrammingRe: Php Header() Function Error by Zahymaka(m): 9:10pm On Jul 15, 2006
Can you post your code let's have a look at it?

If you've already echoed any content at the top of your file, then you can't use the header() function except you're using output buffering [let's not talk about that].

If you have outputted any content, before calling header(), you'll receive a warning. All header() calls are to be made before outputting any content, which is why I'm asking to see your code. Perhaps I could help you rewrite it.
Jokes EtcWife 1.0, Girlfriend 6.0, Full Version. . . by Zahymaka(op): 7:51pm On Jul 15, 2006
I'm sure some people would say this joke has been here before, but most people have seen only the short version. Here's the full version, taken from http://independentsources.com/2006/06/07/girlfriend-6-wife-1/ :

Last year a friend of mine upgraded from GirlFriend 6.0 to Wife 1.0 and found that it’s a memory hog leaving very little system resources available for other applications. He is now noticing that Wife 1.0 is also spawning Child Processes which are further consuming valuable resources. No mention of this particular phenomena was included in the product brochure or the documentation, though other users have informed him that this is to be expected due to the nature of the application.

Not only that, Wife 1.0 installs itself such that it is always launched at system initialization, where it can monitor all other system activity. He’s finding that some applications such as PokerNight 10.3, BeerBash 2.5, and PubNight 7.0 are no longer able to run in the system at all, crashing the system when selected (even though they always worked fine before). During installation, Wife 1.0 provides no option as to the installation of undesired Plug-Ins such as MotherInLaw 55.8 and BrotherInLaw Beta release. Also, system performance seems to diminish with each passing day.

Some features he’d like to see in the upcoming wife 2.0.

1. a “Don’t remind me again” button
2. a Minimize button
3. An install shield feature that allows Wife 2.0 be installed with the option to uninstall at any time without the loss of cache and other system resources
4. An option to run the network driver in promiscuous mode which would allow the system’s hardware probe feature to be much more useful.

I myself decided to avoid the headaches associated with Wife 1.0 by sticking with Girlfriend 7.0. Even here, however, I found many problems. Apparently you cannot install Girlfriend 7.0 on top of Girlfriend 6.0. You must uninstall Girlfriend 6.0 first. Other users say this is a long standing bug that I should have known about. Apparently the versions of Girlfriend have conflicts over shared use of the I/O port. You think they would have fixed such a stupid bug by now. To make matters worse, The uninstall program for Girlfriend 6.0 doesn’t work very well leaving undesirable traces of the application in the system. Another thing — all versions of Girlfriend continually popup little annoying messages about the advantages of upgrading to Wife 1.0.

Bug Warning
_________________________________________________________________

Wife 1.0 has an undocumented bug. If you try to install Mistress 1.1 before uninstalling Wife 1.0, Wife 1.0 will delete MSMoney files before doing the uninstall itself. Then Mistress 1.1 will refuse to install, claiming insufficient resources.

Bug work-arounds: To avoid this bug, try installing Mistress 1.1 on a different system and never run any file transfer applications such as Laplink 6.0. Also, beware of similar shareware applications that have been known to carry viruses that may affect Wife 1.0. Another solution would be to run Mistress 1.1 via a UseNet provider under an anonymous name. Here again, beware of the viruses which can accidentally be downloaded from the UseNet.

Tech Support Suggestions
_________________________________________________________________

These are very common problem men complain about, but is mostly due to a primary misconception. Many people upgrade from Girlfriend 6.0 to Wife 1.0 with the idea that Wife 1.0 is merely a Utilities & Entertainment program. Wife 1.0 is indeed an operating system and designed by its creator to run everything.

It is unlikely you would be able to purge Wife 1.0 and still convert back to Girlfriend 6.0. Hidden operating files within your system would cause Girlfriend 6.0 to emulate Wife 1.0 so nothing is gained. It is impossible to uninstall, delete, or purge the program files from the system once installed. You cannot go back to Girlfriend 6.0 because Wife 1.0 is not designed to do this.

Some have tried to install Girlfriend 7.0 or Wife 2.0 but end up with more problems than the original system. Look in your manual under “Warnings - Alimony/Child support”. I recommend you keep Wife 1.0 and deal with the situation.

I suggest installing background application program C:\YES DEAR to alleviate software augmentation. Having installed Wife 1.0 myself, I might also suggest you read the entire section regarding General Partnership Faults (GPFs). You must assume all responsibility for faults and problems that might occur, regardless of their cause. The best course of action will be to enter the command C:\APOLOGIZE. In any case avoid excessive use of C:\YES DEAR because ultimately you may have to give the APOLOGIZE command before the operating system will return to normal. The system will run smoothly as long as you take the blame for all the GPFs.

Wife 1.0 is a great program, but very high-maintenance. Consider buying additional software to improve the performance of Wife 1.0. I recommend Flowers 3.1 and Diamonds 2K. Do not, under any circumstances, install Secretary with Short Skirt 3.3. This is not a supported application for Wife 1.0 and is likely to cause irreversible damage to the operating system.

Best of Luck,

Nairaland GeneralRe: Stale Rss Feeds On Nairaland? by Zahymaka(m): 8:55pm On Jul 11, 2006
I'm having exactly the same problems.

I'm a bit familiar with the workings of SMF, so when the feed go disabled [I'm assuming Seun created a static file that pointed to the RSS feed], I went the other way and used query strings. Sadly, RSS got disabled entirely.

I rely on RSS feeds to get the latest info. If the current setup queries the database on each request, then that's bad [I noticed NL became faster whenever I stopped requesting RSS feeds].

If Seun could schedule a cron job that runs a PHP script that builds the RSS feed, say every ten minutes, it's not going to be much of a problem We'd have a win-win situation -- users see the latest news and go straight to reply the ones that interest them instead of prowling, and there's no problem with the server load from many people making essentially the same request for an RSS feed.

ProgrammingPhp Patterns by Zahymaka(op): 10:14am On Jul 10, 2006
I was talking to Skima today, and discovered I don't know much about patterns in PHP or any other language. From our discussions, I've been using at least two patterns without realising. An example would be http://books.zatechcorp.com which supports templating and uses a MySQL database abstraction layer I wrote and use in all my projects.

What have been your experiences with patterns and best practices and could you enlighten us on their uses and applications?
PhonesCell Phones Are Bad by Zahymaka(op): 1:33am On Jul 10, 2006
I've always refused to get a cell phone but as my firm is going to start up this month, my partner has insisted I get one to talk to him, and to clients. I believe they're a nuisance. Here's a funny story taken from Sacramento News:

U.S. District Court Judge William Shubb became so frustrated with ringing cell phones in his courtroom last week that he resorted to some unusual search and seizure--much to the surprise of one senior citizen.

SN&R spoke to several attorneys who witnessed the tantrum. All asked that their names be kept out of this story--because they didn’t want to make the judge mad. Judge Shubb also helped fill in some of the details.

It was about 9:15 on the morning of June 28, in Shubb’s courtroom in the federal courthouse downtown. Shubb was presiding over the sentencing phase of a complicated criminal tax case.

“We were just getting started and were in the middle of a very important legal argument,” Shubb explained.

That’s when somebody’s cell phone went off.

“Shubb just stopped everything and said, 'Whose cell phone is that?’” one witness explained. It turned out that the phone belonged to a woman whom witnesses described as being in her mid- to late 60s.

The woman dug around in her purse but couldn’t turn the offending device off. That’s when Shubb unplugged his microphone and left the bench.

“You have to imagine this little guy, all red in the face, his robes just flying in the wind,” one witness explained. Shubb reportedly stormed through the courtroom, repeating, “Whose cell phone is that? Whose cell phone is that?”

“Then, she just sort of meekly raised her hand,” one attorney continued. The judge demanded the woman hand the phone over. She did. Then, according to witnesses, he flung open the courtroom doors and chucked the phone down the hall. “I didn’t throw it; I tossed it,” Shubb said in his defense. “I just wanted it gone.”

When he returned to the bench, he ordered marshals to collect every cell phone in the courtroom.

Shubb explained: Ringing cell phones had become a real problem during this particular trial. Five times before this incident, Shubb had to stop the trial to warn somebody whose cell phone had gone off. The cell-phone situation got so bad, Shubb said, that a defendant’s phone rang while he was on the stand. “There he was testifying, and there’s this extremely loud, obnoxious tone, playing right into the microphone,” Shubb said.

Halfway through the trial, the judge had two large signs reading “All persons are ordered to turn their cell phones off” posted at the courtroom’s entrance.

Judge Shubb has a reputation among attorneys for being a very intelligent but extremely short-tempered man. One attorney called Shubbs “a nutcase.” Another chalked up Shubb’s outburst to “federalitis,” noting that powerful federal judges like Shubb become “insulated from normal social interaction.”

Perhaps the phone-flinging was an understandable reaction from a man pushed too far. But Shubb’s not proud of it. “I’m sorry that had to happen. I wanted to make my point more strongly than I previously had done,” Shubb explained. “I regret that I had to take such severe measures.”

SN&R was unable by press time to reach the woman whose cell phone was seized and thrown (or tossed) by Judge Shubb. According to one witness, the phone was not working when it was returned to her later that day.

“It’s very important that people follow these rules and not disrupt important court proceedings,” Shubb concluded.

Web browsers [like Avant and Crazy Browser] built on Trident [Internet Explorer's engine] have the same security risks as using IE because Windows Explorer uses Trident too. Be warned!

Opera or Firefox is a better choice.
