PoliticsRe: Driver Sent To Prison For Blocking Fashola’s Convoy by zebudaya(m): 3:02pm On May 25, 2012
You people scream and holler about how you want change. When change comes, then Fashola is now the bad guy.

From the newspaper article, the guy was blocking a freeway with his trailer, and could not produce his license or vehicle registration. Some of you folks overseas, say oh If he were in Florida or some other part of the US, He would only get a ticket. Nonsense!. If you are driving without registration/driver's license/obstructing the road, they would impound your car and take you to jail. Then you would meet the judge in the morning and get a hearing, and then the Judge sets bail conditions.

A friend of mine, once drove my car without a license, and got into an accident. She called me and I was 3 minutes away from the scene. I got there in under 5 minutes, and they impounded the car, even though I was there. He could have arrested her on the spot, and he would have been right. The only reason he didn't do it was because I begged him, and to protect himself he impounded the car.

Shout out to Fashola for arresting that bagger.

Hi,

How come when I'm looking for current information, it always gives me search results that are supposedly current but the last time someone posted on it was years ago or months. E.g I typed "NIPOST" in the Nairaland search box, I get results for "NIPOST: How Efficient Is It?" that gives me the impression the post is 1 week old (24 April 2012) , but you look at it and it's a 4 year old post. The last post on it was 1 year and 4 months ago.

They all look current, but I have to waste time going through them one by one to get what I need.

You folks are doing a great job, but please fix this bug.

Museveni has been in power for 26 years, just 4 years less than Mubarak ruled Egypt. If Museveni wasnt a yes boy to the west, the story would have been a whole lot different. It would have read something along the lines of: Revolutionary; Joseph Kony fights evil dictator Museveni for the liberation of Uganda. The message from the west is clear, If you are an African, Middle Eastern, South American leader, you can lord over your people for however long you like as long as you tow our line. I'll give some examples:

Yemen - Saleh in power 32 years - friend of the West - protected
Saudi Arabia - Royal family (dictators) - friend of the west - protected
Kuwait - Royal family (dictators) - friend of the west - protected
Qatar - - Royal family (dictators) - friend of the west - protected
Uganda - Museveni in power 26 years - friend of the west - protected
Cameroun - Biya in power 30 years - friend of the west - protected
Equitorial Guinea - Mbasogo - in power 33 years - friend of the west - protected
Burkina Faso - Campaore in power 25 years - friend of the west - protected
Zimbabwe - Mugabe in power 32 years - enemy of the west since he took white owned farms - persecuted
Egypt - Mubarak in power 30 years - friend of the west till the very end when they realised the Egyptian people wouldnt give up - protected
Iran - Ahmedinijad in power 7 years - opposes the west - persecuted
Venezuela - Chavez in power 12 years - opposes the west - persecuted

Ask yourself one question, why do you not hear anything about these protected long serving dictators in the western News. I am sure you know the answer to that.
You are the MAN. More grease to your elbows. May your pockets never run dry. May you family be always well dressed and well fed and may they always have joy.

Folks, There's no need to insult anyone. @ *dhtml I like the interswitch site. It's elegant and it works. Kudos!

I read all the responses and understood why a back end guy may not be able to hire a front end guy. I think y'all should join forces and make the best products possible. There is no point in going solo. You can even use free wordpress themes or other themes and modify them or if your customer needs an online shopping cart you can use zencart, cubecart, mangento etc and modify it. Sometimes there's no need to code from scratch. Oyibo man does the minimum required to get from point A to point B. Never more! He calls it being efficient and being effective.

At one point, one should be willing to fire customers who are not willing to pay the cost instead of reducing your standards to get the contract, and producing a badly designed site.

I refrained from criticizing anyone who was bold enough to post their work because there is no reason to destroy someone's confidence by rejecting their creativity.
However, we all agree on the need for pursuing better design.

Naija as a whole needs better designed products, roads, airports. It's a shame that one flies into MMIA in lagos, and there are no toilet papers in the bathrooms. Just wet floors and water bottles for people to use. How would the oyibo man judge us?

You failed to understand the difference between a programmer and a designer
You fail to appreciate the need for good design. If a programmer sucks at design, he should hire a designer to make his work look good.

Same reason why women wear make up and lipstick. Same reason men polish their shoes and cut their hair. To look good

Bill Gates made billions by realizing computers needed a user interface instead of DOS. Why are you trying to drag us back to the stone age. Everything is judged by what it looks like. Design is as important as function.

I'm done. If y'all want to celebrate mediocrity go ahead. Me and my household would strive for excellence.

How are apartment.com and rent.com built. What language did they use? Please deconstruct and list in detail how you think they were built.  Can they be recreated with Ruby on Rails?

2) Most African sites are ugly?  Is this like Shilling's case of emotional arguments or factual argument?  If the latter, again, evidence please.

No one is celebrating or defending mediocrity here.  At least I am not.  We need to move past talking points that aren't based on facts.  Just because you haven't had the opportunity to see a good site doesn't mean they exist.  Also, when you say most, that assumes you have seen at least 51% of the Nigerian websites out there. . .and I doubt this is the case.  Again, if you have done your research well, present it to the forum and I will be the first one to take back all I have said here on this thread.
I listed jobberman. I thought it is well designed. Stop arguing, stop shooting the messenger. Back up you criticism with facts. Please post the well designed Nigerian sites.

I de siddon look.

@poster

Saying that Nigeria Webmasters Suck is an insult. There is a big difference between Website programmer and Website designer(i.e the person that handles the graphic interface).

For instance, due to the situation of things, I admit that I am not good when it comes to graphic interface of a website but as long as the mechanism that controls the site is concern, I know that I can handle it and get things working perfectly.

Besides, judging Nigerian to other countries like US, UK,Canada, is unfair when you know fully well that the situation at home for example electricity issue, internet speed, lack of equipment, etc don't help web designers to function well. Imagine writing a code and when you are about to get things done, all of a sudden, there is a power failure or your internet is not connecting again.

Have you ever written code with candle and lamper  with car battery powering your system before? That is what we go through just to put  out "Hello World" for you to click. Go to most Nigeria universities, check out the number of students that are studying Computer Science and Engineering, and tell me how many among them have personal computer or how many the school provided for them. Now compare that to the countries you are judging us with. Instead of insulting them, you should encourage them. Who knows where the next Mark will come from.

Finally, do you mind telling us the area you specialize(e.g doctor, lawyer, engneer, etc) so that we will know if you suck in that field?
You folks love to celebrate and defend mediocrity. Shilling is right. Most African sites are ugly. A good programmer should have an eye for design. End of story. There are free wordpress themes one can modify or learn from. One can also use Joomla or Drupal. At least make sure the colors coordinate. Look at this South African website. It's world class. http://www.woothemes.com/

Your story about programming and almost completing the code and there is power outage is moot. What does that have to do with anything?

@Shilling Jobberman is well designed. just add a www and a .com to it. For some reason the forum won't let me post the link here. I guess it's a competitor to "you know who's" site.  grin

@ Mobinga, not true, he probably had prior experience detonating an IED. Look at the way he confidently walked to the package. He would have detonated it it were a passive IED, however this one either went off from being moved or by being detonated via cell phone.

To those who say why didn't he wear protective gear?, well you don see Naija police man you wants to die. If his Oga told him go detonate the bomb would he say Oga I no fit. I don't have any protective gear?

People that live in the West forget how things are done in Africa. It's appalling.  This is Africa T.I.A
