CPT is a 'valid work authorization permit'; just for a limited time(usually you can take up to 2 semesters for CPT full time, and more if you're doing pre-OPT). Now, when you're on CPT, you still have to be enrolled full-time;only that this time it's your job that is counting as credits. In fact it shows up on your transcript, and you're graded for it (Pass/Fail). The grading is done when after you're done, you write a report on what you did. Schools have their different policies regarding how long you can go on CPT however, but yes you can work 40 hours a week!

A lot of employers in Engineering typically like to have you back after your CPT term is exhausted; if you leave a good impression and they are not having issues themselves forcing them to downsize.
It's always a very good idea to get a really good employer, and to start searching as early as the end of your first semester because of recruiting calendars.

In some cases, you can transition to OPT from CPT, if you take classes-say online while on CPT.

No all courses require or approve CPT. It also depends on the school.

Yes, CPT is very competitive. It is not a department thing as someone said. You have an edge if you are in a STEM graduate program and as far as i know is you get an internship with a company and meet all the requirement your school is mandated to process your CPT [i][/i]even if it not not necessary for your course. I am currently on CPT against the wish of my advisor who wants to keep me in the lab 24/7. The company i work for (Biopharm) sponsors H1B then GC. Internships is one of the surest way to obtain your GC as the company greatly saves by employing their interns after graduation.

Do not be discouraged. I applied to more than 15 companies. I did phone screen with about 5 of them. The problem is when you would be asked if you are authorized to work in the US. I'd advice you say "Yes" at this point. Saying no is automatic disqualification for most companies, afterall CPT is a temporary authorization.

The department thing i said is that (check the bold). I said CPT has to be approved by department and I even said I was posted for my CPT through the help of my school. Is that hard to umderstand

Some school actually help post student for CPT in companies or hospitals and they can also ask you to do your CPT in school(which you also said your advisor wanted you to do )

I also noted that once I start my CPT, I will make sure I network so I can also get a placement for my OPt at the same hospital

Hospital rarely file for my own profession ( H visa is actualky goof for those in STEM ) so it's either I write licensing exam or I go the marriage route.

The latter is much better

Yea Na, if you are doing something in the health care, you must do clinicals by force. It could be done as CPT or anyhow they want it.

Once you get approval, all your F-1 status , OPt hustle has ended. You can even abuse them at the international office

Then you off to camp but they can still bounce you if you don't perform well

They will drill and make you sweat but it worth it at the end.

CPT is a department thing. Your department will tell you if you need it. Like I said it is IT, you can't force your department to let you go for it if they don't need it. Focus on getting GA,Ra or TA or on campus employment.

For example, am starting clinical practicum this fall, the department have posted us to some hospitals. I will network when I get there so by the time am done, the hospitals could retain me for OPT. That is the advantage of CPT

The Mavin usually start application process by december through march. The basically accept people that can speak foreign language.

The first step is to apply online , visit a recruiter in your area, then afterwards they will call and you get interview on the phone. You will be told to speak the language to an officer who can also speak. The officer will speak ask you what do you call this and that in your language. You need to be fast because that is the first process. Once you are able to convince the officer, the next step follow. Medicals, background check and letter for your school DSO. You will be exempt from OPt or my other academic stuff you have at that moment.

It's a long process but if one is determined. It finally worked for my friend because I knew the steps

OPT is an optional training and it run for 12-17 months depends on your course. You can only start OPT after you graduate. You are required to leave the USA 60days after the end of OPT

Summer internship could be CPT, you could earn credit for it. It could also be called IT ( like naija IT) and you resume the next semester to continue classes. The summer internship will be a job related to your course and it could also be unpaid.

OPT = after graduation

Summer internship ( CPT or iT ) = before graduation

$550 a month all utilities included is very realizable. Room in a house is usually cheaper than apartments. I currently pay $420 per month where I stay and utilities per month don't exceed $100 and ranges from as low as $60 per month during summer like this (i.e. $480 in total per month) when the heater is not being used (i.e. less gas bills) to its maximum of $100 in winter (i.e. $520 per month) when the heaters are being used. I haven't even spent up to $550 per month in rent and utilities since I started living here.

I show them my bank of America account and they saw the inflow of money which was actually good. I also have a seller account on eBay and amazon which I show them that I make good income every month but they need a credit history.

From all the posts, I think if one is careful, you can successfully use a credit card

No one cares about this I am an international student story. They need this credit history to show to show credibility

CNN is saying basically what I have been saying. All you needed to do was do a simple research for yourself to see.

A credit history simply shows that you are responsible person. People with bad financial habits DO NOT get credit cards not have poor credit histories. One's true character will always tell even if you are wearing a suit.

I Have been using my school insurance because they will never allow us to get elsewhere. Alrhough a year is around $1200 which I think it's ok.

During the boom the credit scheme started out to majorly focus on ailing and healthy businesses with a view to making the economy stronger.

There is always a first time for everyone but getting a credit card is not a PaNaCea for owning a home or car etc.

If you need a home to build from scratch or an already built one or a car questions asked are far from if you have a credit card or not.

my questio to you is why do you think an intl student need a credit card? a student is here to study even thouhh we know they all would wanna adjust status in furure, if they dont have the raw cash there is no needstaying in buying a house when they just coming in who go approve am or a car? there are millions of students jumping buses and living in apts. and still doing fine.

Even businesses even have one as there are credit cards for businesses and credit history for businesses.

Before December?? building credit to a reasonable score and with good history takes years of paying off your balances completely by your due date...there are some tricks though to making your score go up fast.

I know right. Once he said the approval is 3k, I was thinking credit history should be move fast.

I want to build it to get a car and some other stuff. I figured credit helps a lot

I applied to do a graduate programme this fall at Troy University in Alabama somewhere in February this year and just got my 1-20 today.

But then, i am supposed to be in School by August 16th. i am in a fix right now due to some few issues here and will greatly appreciate members advice.

1. My TOEFL scores expired in May,2015 but as the time of application in February it wasnt and im wondering if i can go ahead and apply and explain to the VO's there or i take a new test

1. You don't need to rewrite TOeFl or GRe. Just go ahead and schedule an emergency interview, since you are applying from Ghana, you might get a nearest date. You can go to the embassy with just your toefl result

2. Go online and print out your GRe result. Since u are already admitted ,you don't have to rewrite. The result are just to show your credibility to the VO

Send an email to your school to give you a 2 weeks extension for arrival or Defer your admission till spring
