A 33-year-old accounts officer, Stephen
Itodo, who allegedly raped his
neighbour, was on Tuesday arraigned in
an Oshodi Magistrates’ Court, Lagos. Itodo, who resides at No. 18, Alhaji
Shehu Close, Oshodi, Lagos, is being
tried for assault and rape. The prosecutor, Cpl. Kehinde Olatunde,
told the court that the accused
committed the offences on May 3, at his
residence. “The accused forcefully had unlawful
sexual intercourse with his 20-year-old
neighbour without her permission,’’ he
told the court. “The accused went to call the
complainant in her room that he was not
feeling fine that she should help him to
buy matches. “When the complainant came with the
matches, she knocked on Itodo’s door.
He told her to open the door and bring it
inside that he was too weak to get up. “Immediately the complainant opened
the door and stepped inside, the
accused who was hiding behind the
door bolted it and dragged her to his
bed.’’ The prosecutor said that the
complainant shouted for help but the
accused overpowered her and forcefully
had sex with her. The offences, Olatunde said,
contravened Sections 258 and 261 of
the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011. Section 258 prescribes a life jail term as
penalty for offenders. The accused denied committing the
offence, and Magistrate Akeem Fashola
granted him bail in the sum of N200,
000 with one surety in like sum. Fashola adjourned the case till June 8 for
further hearing.

A COMMERCIAL bus driver, who had stayed in the sun for hours while queuing to get petrol at a filling station suddenly slumped and died. The incident happened at the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) mega filling station along Iwo Road in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State on Tuesday May 12. According to eyewitnesses, the driver and others had gone to the station very early in anticipation of getting fuel from there with the belief that it will be easier and cheaper at the station since they should get their supplies directly from the NNPC. But his hopes and that of many others were dashed when he stayed throughout the day and at about 6.30 pm, when it was his turn to be served, the deceased got down from his vehicle to open the tank to be filled but suddenly, he slumped and died before help could get to him. The incident was said to have thrown the place to chaos and confusion as people hurriedly left with their vehicles. A police patrol team from the Kajorepo Police Division, which arrived at the scene, took the corpse away
