No fewer than 150 intending pilgrims to this year's hajj in Mecca, Saudi Arabia were left stranded at the international wing of the Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos following their inability to show evidence of having secured a travel visa for the journey to the Holy Land. It was gathered that the pilgrims, mostly from Ogun, Osun and Oyo states had been defrauded by a travel agent hired to secure travel visa, airfares and accommodation for them while in Saudi Arabia. The pilgrims were expected to travel to Mecca last Friday with Qatar Airways, but the trip was truncated following the failure of the travel agent to show up with their passports and travel visas. The agent (name withheld) was believed to have raked in about N142.5million from the 150 pilgrims as each of them was said to have paid N950, 000 for visa processing, airfares and other logistics charges. When Daily Sun visited the airport, it was a pitiable sight as the intending pilgrims had converted the departure hall of the international airport into their sleeping apartment. It was gathered that Jeddah Airport in Saudi Arabia would officially close today, which means if they failed to travel yesterday night or early today, their dreams of participating in the 2013 hajj exercise to Mecca would have been defeated. One of the pilgrims, Mr. Abdulwasiu Adeyemi from Abeokuta in Ogun State, who spoke to journalists, said they arrived at the airport as early as 7am last Friday, but were yet to travel for the hajj in Mecca. Adeyemi said each of them paid the agent N950,000 for the visa, air ticket and accommodation, but lamented that as at last Friday, some of them could not lay hands on international passports containing their visa as the agent failed to show up. He said the passport was only given to him and some others yesterday and that they were asked to pay additional N280,000 for a return flight ticket for the exercise. "I've never had any business deal with this company (the travel agent). He told us to be at the airport as early as 10am last Friday for our flight with Qatar Airways and we complied, but unfortunately, our passport and visas were not given to us by the agent as he claimed that they were not ready then." Another affected pilgrim, Alhaja Muibat Arogunjo, lamented that the agent had turned her pilgrimage into a thing of sorrow . Arogunjo said she had spent all the money in her savings for the exercise and could no longer cough out more funds for a new ticket. But a representative of the agent at the Lagos airport, who declined to mention his name, told journalists that the pilgrims were not defrauded by the company. "It is the delay in the return of their visas by the Saudi Arabian Embassy in Nigeria that led to the inability of the pilgrims to travel at the agreed date," said the official. |

PUNCH Metro learnt that the suspect was among the prison inmates recently pardoned by the state government. But a few weeks after his release, the suspect, who goes by the pseudonym, Agba Musa, and two others at large, on September 14, 2013, snatched a Toyota Corolla car marked LSR 587 AR. Punch reports that operatives of the Special Anti- Robbery Squad, who were on patrol duty at the Ijesha end of Oshodi-Apapa Expressway, sighted the robbers and chased them. Police said when the heat became too much for the robbers, they jumped out of the vehicle and took to their heels. Musa was, however, arrested by SARS men and the vehicle was recovered, while the other two escaped. Speaking at the state command headquarters in Ikeja, the suspect said it was not his initial plan to become an armed robber. Crying profusely, he said: “Initially, I did not want to be an armed robber. I lived in Ebute Meta and I owned a motorcycle. Two of my friends told me to give them a ride to Aguda, Surulere. On getting there, they brought out guns and started robbing people. I swear I did not know that they were going for an operation. That was how I joined them. I ended up following them for 10 robbery operations. We usually operated in Onike, Yaba, Bariga and Somolu, where we robbed small shops. Later, we started snatching vehicles such as Toyota and Honda and we would give a dealer to sell. My share was always N50,000.“ My gang comprised myself, Kehinde Nice, Asumo and Nuru. The police arrested Asumo and I, while Nuru was killed. Kehinde is still on the run.” The suspect said after spending one and a half years in prison, he and about 80 others were pardoned. He said he went back to robbery because he was tempted by bad friends and needed money to survive. Still crying profusely, he said, “I dropped out of school in JSS2 and became an apprentice at a mechanic workshop but I did not finish my training. After sometime, I got a girl pregnant and became a father with responsibilities. Unfortunately, my father is late and my mother is old, so I have no one to help me. After leaving prison, I started receiving calls from people that they needed vehicles and I was short of money. So, I thought to myself that if I could steal just one car, I would be alright. I did not know that police had been on my trail from the day I was released.” The Oyo State indigene asked the police to give him one more chance, promising that he would not return to his old ways. “I never killed anyone during my robberies, please. If they can spare me one last time, I will be grateful,” he said. Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, Damasus Ozoani, said the suspect would be charged to court for armed robbery. |

Some policemen, who attempted entering the campus to quell the unrest, were turned back at the gate by the students, who held everyone within the campus hostage for hours. PUNCH Metro learnt that a clash between the cultist and some students the previous night had kept everybody awake. A source in the Department of Mass Communication explained that the clash started after an unnamed student was attacked by some cult members with machetes and was wounded. On Thursday, the students took over the gates of the school and chased away security men to protest the Wednesday night attack. One of the students at the gate told PUNCH Metro that the security men guarding the campus had failed in their duties. It was observed that a few of the security men had changed into mufti, while some of the students who tried to record the riot with their camera phones were assaulted. The Rector, Dr. Kudirat Ladipo, later came to address the protesters. She capped her address with a prayer for peace on the campus. The church, which is based in Sunridge, Mabelreign, allegedly promised members trips to TB Joshua's Synagogue Church Of All Nations (SCOAN) which is headquartered in Lagos. TB Joshua is reputed across Africa to have mythical healing powers which has seen thousands of people from around the world with various personal problems and ailments flocking to his church. Claiming to be operating under the express direction and instruction of TB Joshua, the Harare church was also selling bottles of "holy water" allegedly used by the preacher for his healing sessions. Dozens of desperate people seeking a quick solution to their life problems were shelling out up to US$50 for a bottle of the "miracle water" which TB Joshua is said to give out for free. But the scam was exposed after TB Joshua issued a statement distancing his organisation from the Harare church, forcing its members to rush to the police in a bid to recover their money. Harare provincial police spokesperson Inspector James Sabau confirmed investigations were underway. Some arrests have been made but sources close to the developments said the scam's masterminds â€" a Dutch national known only as Eric and a local woman, Shaleen Manhiri â€" fled the country when their cover was blown after attracting huge numbers of followers within a short period of time. TB Joshua has divided local opinion following reports he would attend national prayer meeting scheduled for May 25 at the invitation of MDC-T leader and Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai |

Mr Castaldo, who has been in love with the pet for two years, wanted to be united with his goat Carmela in a church, by an evangelical minister. BELIEVE it or not, but you could be safer ingesting marijuana -the most used illegal drug on Earth – than a prescription pain killer drug. Findings by a brand new first-of-its-kind global study conducted at the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington, USA, showed that prescription pain killers, though legal, could be the deadliest drug of all. A publication in The Lancet, revealed that marijuana, though often preferred to other illicit drugs of addiction such as cocaine, heroin and amphetamines are responsible for killing fewer persons than addictive painkillers such as Oxycontin and Vicodinbe. Of a total of 78,000 drug deaths, prescription pain pills accounted for more than half. The study does not mention why marijuana has become the most popular drug, controversy over the legalisation of cannabis in some US states rages on. While marijuana use is still illegal according to federal law, the new global report found that men in their 20s were most likely to abuse any of the drugs studied. Drugs such as Ecstasy and other hallucinogens were not included due to a lack of data. The study also found that Australia, Russia, the UK and the US were the hardest hit by substance abuse. Those living in these areas were also more likely to use the drugs which originated closer to home. For instance, persons living in Asia or Australia were more inclined to abuse amphetamines and opioids whereas North Americans used more marijuana and cocaine. Marijuana “Even if it is not very solid data, we can say definitely that there are drug problems in most parts of the world,” explained senior author Theo Vos. Michael Lysnkey with the National Addiction Centre at King’s College in London warned that these numbers are likely to change, saying the world’s preference for drugs may change in the future. “The illicit use of prescribed opiates in the US has only happened in the last 10 years or so,” said Lysnkey in a statement. “It’s possible in another 20 years, patterns will again change in ways we can’t predict.” Many continue to debate the potential health benefits and dangers of marijuana usage with constituents on either side pointing to medical studies that reach different conclusions. Earlier this year, researchers from Tel Aviv University say they found smoking marijuana to be beneficial to elder patients who suffer from a variety of chronic ailments. The Israeli researchers said 19 elderly subjects who smoked marijuana experienced healthy weight gain, an improvement in mood and communication skills and a reduction of chronic pain. A recent study from the University of Montreal, however, found that pot smoking can lead to addictive behavior in teens who are already predisposed, either due to environmental psychological conditions, to pick up an addictive habit. Researchers from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology recently found that the use of LSD, ecstasy and other psychedelic drugs are not linked to mental illness and, in fact, could improve some individuals’ psychiatric health. |
