A three-storey building, said to have been built over 101 years ago, yesterday, collapsed in Kaduna metropolis, trapping all the tenants that were inside at the time of the incident. I even heard awkaraji kicked a ball D̶̲̥̅ǻ̀́Ʈ turned to stone and died |
When it comes to the sports myths, it gets worse. After what I heard years back, i am still searching for the video of Jay Jay Okocha that sees him dribble all eleven members of the opposing team one after the other (twice) before scoring what would surely be the greatest goal in German football as the goalie in that game was Oliver kahn #Wunderbar. But the greatest of lie has to be that of the game that never held: between Nigeria and India at the National Stadium, Lagos in a year that the originator didn’t care to share. I rate this as the greatest Football lie due to the fact that it has spread to all corners of the Nation and the lasting effect it has on the mind of any young child that payed serious attention to this incredible tale. Wide-eyed and with innocent mouths gasping, we listened to the narrator deliver this legendary tale As the Story goes: The Super Eagles played the Indian football team in a match at The National Stadium in Lagos. The game started off well but after a short while the Indians scored and moments later scored again and again and again. The fans in the stands couldn’t comprehend what was going on as the players seemed to leave the ball for their opponents each time they came in contact. The Nigerian players were playing like they were scared of getting close to the Indians and the goalie kept on leaving the goal in fear each time the opponents got into the box. When the players were asked they all explained with a sense of bewilderment that the Indians turned into lions in front of their very eyes and out of fear they gave away the ball as would anyone in their right minds. But as the game went on, the strong willed Nigerians played on with what ever courage they could muster and worked very hard to salvage something. By the time stoppage time was indicated the visitors had just scored their 99th goal and were going for a century (WHAT A MINUTE? I GET IT! IT MUST HAVE BEEN A CRICKET GAME). Anyways as the excellent narrator carried on, he revealed that the Nigerians finally broke into the opposition half with courage and from the flanks a cross was delivered and met with a delicious header from an attacker. GOAAAAAAL! we had pulled something back but the goal scorer remained on the floor motionless and lifeless. He was stretched off and all efforts to resuscitate this hero of some sorts were in vain. Sad end to a game of Football. The aftermath of the game saw India after thorough investigation banned for about 50 years by FIFA for using black magic during a game and with that the Story came to an end and we talked about it for days.

Nwankwo Kanu is 42 and Taribo West, whose career ended two years ago, is in his late fifties, say bloggers in Nigeria Nwankwo Kanu's official age is 33 but his real age is 42. Obafemi Martins is not 25 but 32. Jay- Jay Okocha was 10 years older than his "official" age throughout his career. And Taribo West, whose playing career ended only two years ago, is in his late fifties. Who says so? A stream of bloggers on some of Nigeria's most popular websites, in response to comments made after the country's timid effort in last month's Africa Cup of Nations. Failure to win that trophy is nearly always considered a scandal in the continent's most populous nation but Nigeria's latest misadventure in the tournament triggered a particularly explosive condemnation back home. It started when a former manager of a leading Nigerian club told the Lagos Guardian: "What happened in Angola is a confirmation of what has been happening in the past where most of our players falsified their age during competition. Most of the players are beyond the age they professed and this made it impossible for them to withstand the pace of teams like Zambia and Benin." It also led to an entertaining discussion that shows no sign of abating as the Nigerians, who have three months to prepare for the World Cup, reacted to the criticism by sacking the coach. "Our boys are old, we are paying the price for age cheating," said Ken Anugweje, a former national team doctor and board member of the Nigerian Football Federation. Suspicions about true ages of some Nigerian footballers date back 20 years. Fifa banned Nigeria from all international fixtures for two years after finding that the birth dates of three of their players in the 1988 Olympics were different from ones used by the same players in previous tournaments. A year later Pelé famously declared "an African team will definitely win the World Cup by the turn of the century" after watching seemingly promising Nigerian youngsters lift the Under-17 World Cup and reach the final of the Under-20 competition. How was Pelé to know that the so- called Under-20s of 1989 were so old that, in the words of George Onmonya on nigeriavillagesquare.com, "most of our players have now retired and become grandpas"? Nigeria have a rich tradition of seemingly promising youngsters who mysteriously fail to fulfil their potential. Phillip Osondu was the best player at the 1987 Under-17 World Cup, after which he was snapped up by Anderlecht, only to drift out of the game and into janitorial work after questions were raised about his real age. The star of Nigeria's finalists at the 2001 Under-17 competition went on to become officially the third-youngest player to appear in the senior World Cup when he started the 0-0 draw with England in 2002. But that was as good as it got for Femi Opabunmi, who by 2005 was playing part-time football in the French lower leagues. A trawl through the blogosphere makes for intriguing reading. "A friend of mine who once played in the Nigerian league told me his real age was 34 but his football age was 21," wrote Onmonya. "You can walk into any immigration office in Nigeria today, forge documents at the nearby business centre, change your name, place of birth, date of birth, pay 7,000-10,000 naira instead of the official price of about 5,500 for an international passport and within hours you have completed the whole process." A new passport, a new person – and if you are a footballer, a younger one. A former employee of the British embassy in Nigeria told Observer Sport that when visa applicants complained to him about having their applications rejected, he would reply: "Well don't talk to me about it, I'm dead." He would respond to their looks of puzzlement by pointing to the wall behind him, on which hung his death certificate, purchased for a small fee from a Lagos supplier. Fifa reckon they have finally come up with a foolproof way of determining real age. Ahead of last year's Under-17 World Cup in, as it happened, Nigeria, the governing body announced that players would be subjected to wrist scans using magnetic resonance imaging, and this would determine their true age. That led some countries to undertake precautionary scans beforehand. The results were never announced, but Nigeria suddenly discarded 15 squad members, while Gambia omitted 11 of the 18 who had helped them to victory in the African Under-17 championship a few months earlier. Reports claim that retrospective analyses of the previous three Under-17 World Cups showed more than a third of all players were too old.

Justice Mohammed Idris of the Federal High Court sitting in Lagos has fixed October 16, 2013 for the commencement of trial in a N120 million copyright suit filed against popular music star, Innocent Idibia, a.k.a. TuFace, his wife, Annie Idibia and their manager, Anthonio Anifite over photographs allegedly taken at the recent traditional wedding of the musician and his wife in Akwa Ibom State. Abuja based photographer, Emmanuel Okolo, who is the plaintiff in the suit alongside his studio, Papilonmexy filed suit against the defendants. He is asking for six reliefs, two of which include N100 million in general damages and N20million in exemplary damages. At the resumed hearing of the case yesterday, neither TuFace nor his wife was represented in court. Anifite who is the second defendant was however represented by his counsel, J.O Uttute. Meanwhile, a mild drama ensued when the judge openly admonished Uttute after the latter claimed that he had filed his defence when he had not done so. The judge warned him not to come to this court again if he was not prepared for the case. “You told me that you have filed your response, but looking through here, there is nothing to that effect. And you are even smiling. Do you think you are here to joke? Never come to this court again if you are not prepared. You don’t even know when the case was filed and you are not prepared for it,” said the judge. Also, the plaintiff’s counsel, Habeeb Oredola expressed worry over the defendants’ inability to appear before the court or be represented by a counsel after they were served with the writs of summon. In the writ of summon, Okolo and his studio claimed they were contracted by TuFace’s wife through a third party, identified as Ms Chineze Anyaene to take photo shots at the traditional wedding held in Eket, Akwa Ibom state in March, 2013. The plaintiff said, he was reluctant at the beginning since the offer was coming through a third party, but later accepted after he was convinced that the offer was actually with the blessing of the first defendant. Annie Idibia was said to have later contacted the photographer after the wedding and demanded for the printing of 10 of the high resolution pictures taken. Two weeks after crashing his N25million worth Porsche Panamera along Lekki-Epe express way in the early hours of Saturday, June 15, Wizkid has replaced the damaged Porsche with a brand new one. He posted pictures of his new acquisition on his Instagram page and tagged it #Blessed. Wizkid survived the accident after his newly acquired Porsche Panamera burst a tire, slammed into a road barrier, thankfully didn’t somersault but spun around multiple times before screeching dangerously to a halt with the damaged hood facing the side of the road. Wizkid shaken but unhurt was immediately whisked away in another vehicle while his bodyguard waited to see the vehicle towed away. The pop singer was returning from a Soundcity Nokia #LumiaBeat Party and was in front of the Oriental hotel, Lekki when the accident occurred. Sources say tragedy was averted when the automobile’s airbag ejected immediately on impact shielding Wizkid and the driver instantly. Brown Ideye hardly scores. He also hardly lays assists. And yet, his coach Stephen Keshi has backed the under-fire forward to come good once he sheds his anxiety. The forward scored once at the African Nations Cup and only once more since then; a penalty conversion against Mexico in a 2-2 friendly draw. And at the Confederations Cup he was guilty of squandering a host of gilt-edged chances as he failed to find the back of the net. But his endeavour, hard work, link- up play have found favour with his coach.“Yeah, it’s true that Brown hasn’t scored goals, but that does not make him a bad player,” Keshi tells KickOffNigeria.com. “Sometimes when the ambition [to score] turns into anxiety, it becomes difficult for a striker to score goals. “So all he needs to do is relax. We have been working on his inner relaxation and inner calm so that when he is in front of goal it will be much easier for him.” Keshi praised Ideye’s other qualities, especially his unselfish graft for the team. Against Spain he dropped deep to rescue the two fullbacks from sticky situations, and Keshi says that fits into his philosophy of team ahead of individual. “He is a good kid; he has been working his tail off everywhere on the pitch. And that’s what we want from somebody who plays for the team.” At club level Ideye averages more than a goal every other game, and Keshi predicts that once the forward starts scoring for the Eagles, it will be hard to stop him. “It’s just the finishing that’s lacking because that is his number one job, and that is why people are a little bit angry, but I’m very sure it’s going to come – and when it comes, it won’t stop. “We just need to support him, keep believing in him and give him the confidence to continue to express himself without pressure.” SOURCE:http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/06/suprise-keshi-backs-ideye/ |

While you may be condemning the laws of your country, have a look at some of the most weird, craziest and wackiest laws that lawmakers around the world seem to have made when not in their senses. 1. The conservative land of Dubai doesn’t allow 2 people of the opposite sex to share a hotel room unless they are married or closely related. 4. You would have to shell out a fine lest you are caught carrying ice cream cones in your pocket in Kentucky. We wonder whether it’s as bad to carry full ice creams in the pocket! 6. You will get away with smoking a drug like cannabis in Holland, but if you smoke tobacco, you would be termed as a law breaker. 7. A pregnant woman in UK has the privilege of urinating anywhere she pleases, even in a policeman’s helmet. 8. The higher or lower your earning income is in Finland, accordingly you will be charged for breaking traffic laws. Lifestyle 15 Weird Laws Around the World [Pin It] 9. A diplomatic row seems to be brewing between Nigeria and the United Kingdom following a proposed policy by the British Government requiring Nigerian travellers to the UK to deposit £3,000 as bond in case they overstay their visa limits. On Monday, the Federal Government summoned the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Dr. Andrew Pocock, over the development while the House of Representatives which flayed the policy, argued that it could have negative impact on the relationship between the two countries. Nigeria, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Ghana, Pakistan and India are listed by the UK as countries whose citizens are to deposit the £3,000 under the proposed policy that will take off in November. A Home Office official said the six countries highlighted were those with "the most significant risk of abuse." About 2.2million people are granted visas to enter Britain every year. Last year, 296,000 people from India were granted six-month visas, as were 101,000 from Nigeria; 53,000 from Pakistan; and 14,000 apiece from Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. According to media reports, the Home Secretary Theresa May, said the administration of British Prime Minister, David Cameron, is serious about cutting immigration and abuses of the system. The Sunday Times of London had reported that every visitor aged 18 and above granted a six- month visa would forfeit the £3,000 if they overstayed in Britain after the expiration of their visa . Initially, the scheme will target hundreds of visitors, but the plan is to extend it to several thousands, according to the broadsheet's front- page report. It was gathered that Pocock would meet with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Olugbenga Ashiru, on Tuesday (today) to explain the policy. A source close to the ministry, who confirmed the meeting, said the government was seriously concerned about the implication of the policy on the economy and image of the country. "Pocock is to explain to government if the plan is true and why Nigeria is a target. Government is worried about the highly discriminatory policy which tends to portray the country in a bad light," he explained. Another source told one of our correspondents that the Nigerian High Commissioner to the UK, Dr. Dalhatu Tafida, was also billed to brief Ashiru on the development. But Ashiru, at the 2013 Ministerial Platform on the mid-term activities and achievements of the ministry in Abuja on Monday, said he had not been contacted officially by the UK authorities on the development. He said, "We have not received any official communication from the UK government. When we receive communication, we will study the proposal. I can assure all Nigerians that President Goodluck Jonathan's government will defend the interest of Nigerians by whatever means it can. When we get the proposal, we will study it to see how it will affect ordinary Nigerians." In the House of Representatives, Chairman, Committee on Foreign Affairs, Ms. Nnena Elendu- Ukeje, stated that the policy was a U-turn on a promise by the British Prime Minister, David Cameron, to improve trade relations between the two countries next year. She said, "This policy will not foster true relationship between Nigeria and the UK. It does not promote the spirit of the Commonwealth either. "The same British Government that promised improved trade relations with Nigeria is introducing such a discriminatory policy. "It is a somersault, to say the least." However, Elendu-Ukeje observed that the policy appeared to be "a political issue." She explained, "The Conservative Party wants to prove that they are serious about immigration matters. They are doing this to win voters ahead of the next elections." But, she called on the Federal Government to take urgent steps to register its protest before the take- off date of the policy. "We have to take proactive measures to oppose this policy and by way of reciprocity because next time they will increase this bond of a thing", she said. The lawmaker recalled that in 2008, the British Government introduced £1,000 "fine" on travellers. "They tried it first in 2008; today, four years down the line, they are saying that it will be £3,000. What will be the next figure if we don't take proactive measures now?" Elendu-Ukeje asked. An expert in constitutional law, Prof. Itse Sagay, also described the policy as " hostile and therefore contrary to international diplomacy." He said, "It is evidence of contempt and a clear case of saying 'we don't want people from their country and so let us make it impossible for them to come. "How many people can pay N750,000 as deposit which the British Government will keep and probably trade with while the owner cannot touch it. I think we need to respond appropriately by also raising impossible barrier to British people coming into Nigeria so that at the end, we will see who will lose more. "I think they are making the mistake of believing we need them more than they need us. In fact, it is they who are making more out of Nigeria. "They have a wrong idea of their importance to us. We are more important to them than they are to us." Meanwhile, Ashiru said at the Ministerial Platform that Nigeria's foreign policy in the 70s could not be compared with the present. He said, "The problem today is unemployment. We have to use diplomacy to support job creation in Nigeria so that we can develop our private sector to make it employ more people. "Our youths from universities cannot get jobs. So foreign diplomacy must be used to create jobs and that is what we have been doing." Justifying the budgets for generators and fuel used by Nigerian High Commissions in countries with constant power supply, Ashiru said the criticism "is the ignorance of the highest order." "It is to power the boiler which in most countries in Europe either uses fuel or gas. It is to heat and power the foreign mission houses in winter and also to get hot water." According to him, the biggest challenge facing the ministry is the plight of Nigerians living abroad. "All ambassadors now know that their priority is to attend to the needs of Nigerians in their countries of accreditation. No Ambassador today is allowed to close his doors on Nigerians," the minister said. Ashiru warned Nigerians living abroad against drug trafficking, adding that it was tantamount to committing suicide. "I must warn those who willfully commit crime and thereby commit suicide. Drug trafficking in some countries attracts death penalty. All the airports today have sophisticated equipment; there is no where you hide the drug in your body that you will not be caught." Ashiru also ruled out closing any foreign mission house because, "when you close a mission, you lose a friend. Nigeria cannot afford to lose a friend at this time". He promised that no Nigeria would be treated unjustly in foreign lands. |

The Special Fraud Unit of the Nigeria Police has declared a former Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Alhaja Sinatu Ojikutu, wanted for allegedly defrauding a land buyer of N130m. The SFU alleged in a statement on Wednesday that the suspect and her son, Samson, obtained money from the victim by false representation. The Commissioner of Police for the command, Tunde Ogunsakin, said, "The victim alleged that in September 2011, the suspects conspired and sold a parcel of land at Plot 24 Block 4 situated at Admiralty Way, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos for N130m which he paid into the first suspect's account with the Union Bank of Nigeria Plc. "He further stated that after payment, he requested title document and Alhaja Ojikutu procured an affidavit of support to back her fraudulent claim, a police crime extract and a publication in a newspaper all purporting to loss of the original documents of title to the land. The victim believed her because of her personality as the former Deputy Governor of Lagos State. "The bubble burst when the victim commenced development of the land and was on the verge of completion when the bona fide owner of the land surfaced and indeed it was discovered that the land the suspect sold did not belong to her. She actually sold Plot 23 Block 4 while Plot 24 Block 4 already has a property on it." According to police investigation, the land Ojikutu sold, did not belong to her, but to one Mr. Afolabi. It was also discovered that the Plot 24 Block 4, which actually belonged to Alhaja Ojikutu's late husband, Samson Ojikutu (senior), was sold by him in 1995 and the suspect was a life witness and appended her signature to the sale of the land. Ogunsakin said the suspect further perpetrated the crime by alleging that the original Certificate of Occupancy to the property was missing and swore an affidavit which enabled her to obtain a police report and memorandum of loss. She also put up an advert in newspapers that the original C of O was lost, whereas the original C of O was with the Hallmark Homes, the buyer of the property. He said, "The suspect, who is a 67-year-old retiree from Lagos Island, allegedly connived with her son, Samson, who is currently in the United States to commit the fraud. The suspect and her son were parties to the sale of the land and both signed the agreement given to the complainant and obtained the sum of N130m from him. "She admitted committing the crime but confessed that it was a genuine mistake of plot identification. She refunded the sum of N50m to the complainant and promised to refund the balance as soon as she disposed of her two properties she put up for sale. She also confessed that she had invested the victim's money in her business. "She equally made an undertaking and payment plan which was drawn from September, 2012 and was to terminate by November 2012, but she defaulted." Ogunsakin stated that the suspect was not willing to abide by the terms of payment and had jumped bail. He added that all attempts to contact her had proved abortive. "The SFU declares Alhaja Ojikutu wanted. Anybody with useful information regarding her whereabouts should report to the Commissioner of Police, Special Fraud Unit, 13 Milverton Road, Ikoyi," he said. |
Neurological doctors treating Governor Danbaba Suntai of Taraba State in the United States have told his family and the state government footing his medical bills the governor cannot return to normal state of mental health that would enable him to function as a governor. Mr. Suntai first received treatment at the famous John Hopkins University Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, before moving to a rehabilitation center in upstate New York, both of which have reportedly given up on the chances of full recovery of Mr. Suntai. In October 2012, he survived an aircrash near Yola Airport and was flown to Germany for treatment for brain injuries. A medical source told SaharaReporters that when Mr. Suntai was brought in from Germany, he had swelling in his brain and had lost significant control of his ability to recognize people or speak coherently. The source also described the governor as drooling like a baby. After several months of treatment in the US the doctors have now told Mr. Suntai's family and the deputy governor of Taraba State who came visiting two weeks ago that Mr. Suntai be sent home to manage his condition as there is nothing more that can be done to heal him. The State government has spent close to $3.5 million on Mr. Suntai's treatment in the US alone. At a meeting with his Deputy two weeks ago, Mr. Suntai was seen in photographs laughing out loud, but our medical sources said he repeats anything told to him several times until he is told to stop. A clip of Mr. Suntai meeting with his deputy was shown on the Nigerian Television Authority network, with the sound curiously muted. Mr. Suntai's wife and a few political office holders, including the Commissioner of Information, Emmanuel Bello, are reportedly manipulating the media by claiming that Suntai has fully recovered and is on his way to resuming power as governor. He has been seen in photos that appear to be stage-managed for brief moments to show the ailing governor as though fully healed, but nobody has heard him speak or answer any questions. Mr. Suntai, a trained pilot, was personally flying the aircraft in which he was injured. |
President-General, Association of Nigerian Market Women and Men, Abibatu Mogaji, on Saturday died at 96. Mogaji was the mother of former governor of Lagos State and National Leader, Action Congress of Nigeria, Bola Tinubu. A statement issued said she would be buried on Sunday (today), at the Ikoyi Vaults and Gardens, Lagos. Mogaji recently received an honorary Doctorate Degree from the Ahmadu Bello University during its 50th anniversary. Governor of Osun State, Rauf Aregbesola, described the death of the matriarch as a great loss to millions of people. In a statement by the Director, Bureau of Communications and Strategy, Osun State, Mr. Semiu Okanlawon, the governor said Mogaji's death would leave a big vacuum both in politics and commercial sectors of not only Lagos State but Nigeria at large. Aregbesola said Mogaji led a life of substance that is worthy of emulation. He said, "Mama Abibatu Mogaji was a mother in a million. We commiserate with her children, particularly Asiwaju Bola Tinubu for their great loss. "We commiserate with the Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu; the Mogaji family; the people of Lagos, particularly Femi Okunnu; the party; the government of Lagos; and market men and women in Nigeria and Lagos in particular. "We pray that God gives them the fortitude to bear the loss and we pray God grants her Aljana Firdaus." Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola, said the death was "a great national and personal loss." In a statement by his Special Adviser on Media, Hakeem Bello, Fashola said she was a defender of people's rights. He said, "She was one of the pioneer traders who ventured into the capital intensive and risky business of importing consumer goods, thereby breaking the monopoly previously enjoyed by foreign tradesmen. Her business acumen attracted the attention of multi-national enterprises operating in Nigeria, then, which had no option but to register her as a business partner and distributor of their consumer goods in Nigeria." Also, the state Peoples Democratic Party, in a statement by its Publicity Secretary, Gani Taofik, described the deceased as a dogged fighter for justice. |
Do you know that waking up to urinate could actually decrease your productivity? This is what elderly persons who have difficulty sleeping may discover, especially if they find that their problems worsen if they have to get up in the middle of the night to urinate, according to new research. The problem is known as nocturia, and according to the researchers, it has been linked not only to sleep disruptions but to "significant reductions" in both work productivity and leisure activity as well. They polled 261 women and 385 men who suffer from the condition over a 14-day period, asking them about the impact it has on their ability to perform their work-related and other daily tasks. As it turns out, nocturia decreased on-the-job productivity by 24 percent and the ability to perform recreational activity by 34 percent. A paper detailing the results of the research is published in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine on March 15. Researchers also reported that more than half (54 percent) of all nighttime sleep disruptions were associated with the need to urinate, and that people who woke up remained awake an average of 11.5 percent longer on nights when they had to make a trip to the restroom. "Nocturia is a common problem affecting around a third of adults, but its burden is underestimated and it is often dismissed as being less serious than other chronic conditions in terms of impact on quality of life and societal costs. Data show that nocturia negatively affects both sleep and daytime performance and its impact on work productivity is in line with many other chronic conditions. Patients with nocturia should seek specific treatment for this debilitating condition. It is expected that proper treatment of insomnia might reduce the occurrence of nocturia. Related News |
By SAM EYOBOKA & OLAYINKA LATONA BARRING last-minute changes in plan, the body of late Timothy Obadare, a renowned evangelist and founder of the World Soul Winning Evangelical Mission, WOSEM, who died on March 21 after battling an undisclosed ailment, will be interred in a $25,000 gold casket. Obadare, the blind Akure-based evangelist, the second officially recognized Apostle by the Christ Apostolic Church, CAC, after Apostle Joseph Ayo Babalola noted for his monthly Koseunti Crusade, until his death devoted most of his time teaching the Bible and winning souls for the Kingdom of God. He was in ministry for about six decades, eagerly committed to soul winning. Addressing newsmen in Lagos during the week, the son of the late evangelist and the general overseer of WOSEM in America and Europe, Pastor Paul Obadare, the WOSEM founder will buried in his hometown, Ilesha, Osun State on August 17 in a 14-karat gold plated coffin like the one used for the burial late popstar, Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston. According to the son who had relocated to Nigeria to rebuild the father’s ministry “we want the world to know that the best is given to the one who has done his best for the gospel. If the world can celebrate a carnal man, the world should be able to celebrate a spiritual man better,” adding that “these people have planted seeds into people’s lives and touched lives positively. Not just ordinary lives, but people from the top to the bottom. “Why can’t the whole world, our nation Nigeria, put all their resources together and say he (Prophet Oba-dare) is our own, we are going to give him the best?” he asked. The gold casket used for the burial of late Michael Jackson was manufactured by the Batesville Casket Company of Indiana and it was the same model used for the funeral of Jackson’s hero, James Brown. It was said to have cost $25,000 while that of Whitney Houston was put at between $10,000 and $20,000. As the world’s largest casket maker, Batesville’s products have been used in many celebrity funerals, including those for Farrah Fawcett, Bob Hope, Wilt Chamberlain and Fred Astaire. Giving details of the burial plan made by the several committees set up by WOSEM, CAC and the sons of the prophet, Pastor Obadare said the ceremonies would commence on August 15 with a service of songs in Ilesha, Akure, Ibadan and Lagos as well as a lying-in-state at Ilesha and an interdenominational wake keep service on August 17 preceding the interment at a mausoleum currently under construction at WOSEM Conference ground along Ilesha-Ife Expressway in Ilesha. Prophet T.O Obadare He therefore appealed to Christians, governments, public-spirited individuals, church leaders and believers to join hands with the children to give the fallen evangelist a befitting burial. He acknowledged that the Osun State governor, Ruaf Aregbeshola had promised to accord him a state burial and had actually begun the construction of the road leading to Baba Obadare’s home in Ilesha. Speaking on his recollection of the fallen Prophet Obadare, the younger Obadare said: “Baba would always say to you, I live my life to save some. He could not save the whole world, he was not perfect. But he reached out to as many as he could. That was his passion. He doesn’t care about life like that. Building houses, to him was nothing, having flashy things to him was nothing. He said to us that I don’t have inheritance here; I’m not giving you one. But I have inheritance there, if you can enter into that kingdom, you have made it.’” According to him, the late prophet also desired to see the whole Church of God to be one. “You will never see Baba criticizing any minister. He would say they may make mistakes but pray for them and don’t allow anybody to know that they are weak. He wanted especially Christian leaders to come together. He believed that achieving spiritual goals in life cannot be done individually.” To this end, Pastor Paul Obadare is also committed to the reunifi-cation of CAC and promised to work assi-dously to ensure the manifestation of that dream. “I foresee it coming with a lot of prize to be paid. Meaning that the present leadership on both sides will have to give way. So the old people will give way to the young ones;” just as he assured that the his late father stood for will kept alive. “We have been told even before he demise, that we should deviate from the calling, or else ewe want to go under, ‘but if you don’t, you will excel.’ We don’t want to go under, we want to go up and the only way we can do that is to get ourselves away from all the teething problems and face the real call of the ministry,” Obadare stated. Also speaking at the occasion, founder of Living Waters Ministry, Rev. Ladi Thompson outlined some of the hidden legacies of the late prophet, saying that about “30 years ago I was an enthusiastic but extremely wary Christian and I was extremely skeptical about spiritual communications especially the issue of dreams because I had seen many good Christians destroyed by demonic dreams because they were not cautious to differentiate between the genuine and the counterfeit. “You could imagine my surprise when I began to have a persistent recurring dream centered on a pastel blue Mercedes (flat booth). The details of the car were so clear and the voice kept telling me it was my car! I kept ignoring this recurrent dream until I drove my Peugeot 305 to Surulere one day and saw the same car live! Out of curiosity, I went to inspect it and was told by the mechanic that it was for sale. I observed a strong unction coming from the car and began to question my sanity until I discovered it belonged to Prophet Timothy Oba-dare! “By the time I called him by phone to make an offer the prophet told me the car was no longer for sale, however, he threw some unnerving questions at me and mentioned a new church in the UK. He concluded by telling me that the Lord had told him that some young men would be sent to assist him in ministry. This was the beginning of a cherished relationship and I spent many weeks in his Akure home by invitation mostly filled with fasting, prayers and instructions. After a few little errands things moved on in life but I kept his strange instructions in my heart. “I finally met his eldest son, Pastor Paul Obadare at a convention in the Ukraine in 2009 and we exchanged testimonies about life with his Dad. I did not know that it was all by divine arrangement because the situation that his father had briefed me about almost 30 years before unfolded rapidly. The instructions now made sense after 30 years and I moved swiftly to render the assistance required. “It involved a trip to the USA where I was hosted by Pastor Obadare and ushered into the Prophet’s presence the very next day. I spoke with Baba as he is fondly called and concluded everything needed to execute his thrifty year old instruction. I spent only four days in the USA and returned to Nigeria to execute the mandate on the prophet’s behalf in a very sensitive issue. “It is still amazing whenever I consider the ministration that transpired to serve on a mission with a 30-year old instruction. My closeness to the family is based on this prophetic encounter and I have since discovered that there are others like me who were bonded to the prophet by divine instructions. There is still a residue of such prophetic dealings that the modern church hardly understands but experience has taught us how accurate spiritual dealings can be. “The prophet was larger than life in stature and reach of his ministry continues to amaze me. I believe he was the last of the titans that served under the revival started in the early 1900s with Joseph Babalola and others. The fact that his handicap was no obstacle to his success is also mind-blowing when you consider the African setting,” he stated |
A middle aged housewife in Jos, the Plateau State capital is in trouble after she was caught in her matrimonial bed with another man by her husband. The woman simply identified as Gloria was caught with a neighbour, a father of three who lives some houses away from the couple when the husband returned unexpectedly at their Rukuba Road residence. The husband (names withheld) who sells clothes at the Old Bukuru Park was said to have barely left home for his business when his wife invited her man-friend, identified simply as George to come around as she was sick. According to a neighbour who was with her when she made the call and begged to be anonymous, Gloria told the man friend to buy a pack of Don- Simon and a plate of pepper soup when coming. The neighbour said: “She earlier complained of being ill. I heard her when we were sitting in front of the house telling the person on phone to bring a plate of pepper soup and a drink for her, although I never knew it was her man-friend. “When he came they went out to the woman who sells pepper soup and bought the whole pot. She told me to help her take care of the kids because she had a visitor.” Probably acting on a tip off, the husband returned home earlier than expected and caught her and her lover red handed. According to the husband, “I built a shop for her to sell provisions, so I went to the market to buy protectors to be fixed in the shop. I just came back to realise that the kids were outside and the door locked. “When I knocked she refused to open the door. Some neighbours who saw her and the man told me she was in with somebody, so I raised alarm. “Instead of her to open the door, she opened the ceiling for him to enter and hide. Fortunately, with time a lot of people gathered and an elderly man from my village, who saw what the incident would have resulted to called the police. She opened the door when the police came to the house, and the man friend came down from the ceiling wearing boxers. This marriage has come to an end.” The man and the woman were taken away by the police for ‘safe custody’ and were later released on bail. Also speaking with Vanguard the wife of the culprit said the rumour of her husband’s illicit affair with their neighbour had been on for some time. “I have heard severally that my husband has been engaging in extra-marital affairs with this woman; I went to her house and told her to leave my husband alone, but she refused. God has finally disgraced her”, she said. She added that she had asked her husband for money earlier that day but he claimed not to have money. “I asked him for money because I felt sick, but he refused to give me saying he was broke, but I had he bought Don Simon and a pot of pepper soup just to satisfy his woman-friend. |

By Ibraheem Ayodeji Aziiz The youths of our generation are just the most gullible creatures I’ve ever seen. They say change is the most constant phenomenon in life, yet our forefathers in those days did not allow the changes in their time to destroy their education. Every change must have its own by- products. The by-products of our own changes are technological innovations like GSM handsets, internet facilities, social networks like Nimbuzz, 2go, Facebook, Watsapp connect, Twitter, foreign and home movies etc. Today, we have allowed all these outcomes of change to cripple our education to an extent that makes me shed tears. Education they say, is a veritable tool for national development but I doubt if it is so in my own country because the way we toy with education in this nation will indirectly make it (education) to be an unavoidable tool for national underdevelopment in no distant time. Why won’t there be mass failure in the just- concluded UTME when reading culture is dead and buried? Is there any shortcut to success? Was it not on face-book that I saw a site where some idiots as well as agents of corruption were advertising for JAMB ‘expo’ few days before the exam? When someone copies nonsense from the facebook and other social networks into his/ her scripts, what do you expect? My dear, it’s like expecting a baby boy from your wife when you have just fertilized her egg with female sex genes. That is computer and you. We call it garbage in and garbage out. It’s high time we realized what computer age is doing to us in this country and where it is leading us to. I remember when students lost weight because they were preparing for exams. Such is not obtainable these days. I know there would have been some failures still if all had read but such poor performances could have been reduced drastically. Yes I know some will blame the teachers or the government for not teaching always, or even employing enough of them and remunerating them as well but does the teacher or the government have to read for the candidates after all? The teacher is just like an eye-opener or if you like, facilitator; after all, he is not omniscient. In my own time at St Teresa’s College, Nsukka, we were forced to read. This was then facilitated by the teachers’ effort. I was shocked to the marrow while teaching over 50 students preparing for JAMB and WASSCE somewhere at Enugu Ezike when I found out that only two persons among them had read the popular Things Fall Apart. Does the government or the classroom teacher have to read these novels recommended in the Use of English for people like this when they have not even read the one they were supposed to begin from? Funny enough, almost half of these students keep requesting for my friendship on 2go today as their teacher even when I am no longer with them. This is not a joke anymore. We should bear in mind that these people at the helm of affairs in our education system did not undergo all these intellectual laziness which we are known with these days and that is more reason why they waste no time in giving you the mark you merit without any sentiment whatsoever. Bet me, if Achebe had written Things Fall Apart in our own days, he could have died of hunger. However, I have come to know Nigeria as a nation that likes burying the truth and treating lies as if they were the truth. Otherwise, why is it that instead of prescribimg a way of curbing examination malpractice, they lay blames on the board and take their own wards to private institutions that were built with our church tithes and offerings while the poor ones keep enjoying the ASUU strikes to our own detriment? Even when some of the law enforcement agents go there, it is to enrich their pockets. But then, no problem; these youths we spoil shall be the ones to stop our vehicles on the road, slap us,blindfold us and take us to destinations unknown, asking us to order for the release of billions of naira before we can live again. To those spoiling this nation, I would have to sarcastically say you should keep it up but do not complain to anybody whenever it boomerangs on you. In conclusion, too many words can never fill a basket. I am beginning to see a future when we shall all gather with one mouthpiece and confess to be fed up with corruption in this nation. But before this time, we must all have had negative testimonies to give about this, both the ones breeding corruption and the ones who allowed it to sink into their blood. Those in the corridors of power, if they really love their generations yet unborn, should sit up and realize that money may not be the solution to everything. One does not keep stone where one kept an egg. We cannot continue throwing stones into the market square because any of our dear ones may be there (hope someone out there understands proverbs?). We the young ones should also know that social networks have come and may not last forever. One may be the greatest fool by allowing oneself to be carried away by the tides of time. On Tuesday morning, 11-year-old Ankit (name changed) walked past the filth on a congested street to join other boys like him at a factory in Badli industrial area in northwest Delhi. At 9 am, work was in full swing as the boys toiled, using their tender fingers smeared with machine oil for fixing motors in coolers much in demand in the hot Delhi weather. He belongs to a village in Uttar Pradesh and came to Delhi six months back with a middleman in search of work. His poor parents were promised a monthly income that he is not aware of. The child was made to work 12 hours a day with Rs 100 (277 Naira) given as solace once a week and half a day's relief from the drudgery on Sunday. But Tuesday was different. A day marked by mixed emotions for the 58 children rescued in a raid by the area SDM, labour officials and police, based on a complaint by Bachpan Bachao Andolan (BBA), on the eve of the World Day Against Child Labour. Fifty-six boys were rescued from four factories engaged in making coolers and their parts while the two girls were freed from a spoon factory. The rescue operations were carried out at five different factories and at a placement agency running under the garb of an NGO. When the raiding teams arrived, they were surprised to find the children missing. A close inspection revealed that the boys were hidden in cartons meant for coolers. Frightened and unsure of what lay ahead, the rescued children looked apprehensive when TOI joined them. Most of the boys told tales of abject poverty and how they were working for survival. Nearly all wanted to go to school and have a better future but were unsure how the government would assure that. Most of these child labourers had been trafficked from West Bengal, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh after their parents were paid an advance. The girls belonged to Uttar Pradesh. A 14-year-old boy from Etah in UP said his father was a daily wager and could not afford his education. So he came to Delhi during the summer vacations and was employed at a factory to be able to buy his books. He said he wanted to return home to his parents. While the employers were arrested and booked, a statement from BBA said the SDM present during the rescue operation refused to declare the children as bonded labourers citing logistical compulsions of appearing during the trial. This way the children were denied a comprehensive rehabilitation package under Bonded Labour System Abolition Act 1976. BBA revealed that in 2010 and 2011, only 1,592 employers were convicted for employing child labourers, which works out to one employer per district per year, showing a blatant disregard for the guidelines of Supreme Court. It also pointed that in a period of five years (2007-2011), 12,55,987 inspections were conducted but only 17,884 violations detected and 4,263 people convicted. |
Former governor of Ekiti State, Mr. Ayo Fayose narrowly escaped death along Tuesday night on Ado Ekiti - Afao road when his car was shot at by unknown gunmen. Fayose is one of the leading Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, aspirants warming up for next year's governorship election in the state. This was contained in a statement by Ayo Fayose Campaign Organisation, AFCO, and signed by the Campaign Director General, Mr. Owoseni Ajayi According to the statement, the former governor was trailed by the suspected assassins at about 9 p.m. in a white Hilux van with green number plate at a point close to Fayose Housing Estate. Fayose's driver, according to the statement, noticed that a vehicle was trailing them and immediately alerted his boss who was the only one with him in the car. The statement reads in part: "The driver immediately increased the car's speed and when the driver of the Hilux vehicle saw that they could not catch up with Fayose's car, they were said to have released four shots towards the ex- governor's vehicle. "Seeing that Fayose had arrived Afao, his home- town, the Hilux van turned back. "Earlier that day, Fayose received a call from somebody who called himself 'Solar' telling him that he (Solar) was a life waster and that Fayose should expect a tough time ahead of 2014 election, but the former governor took the message for granted." The AFCO DG, therefore, called on the police to take appropriate action before the state is turned into a theatre of war. The police image maker in the state, Mr. Victor Babayemi, however, said he was yet to be officially briefed on the allegation. |

The Abuja Division of the Federal High Court, yesterday, heard how alleged kingpin of the Boko Haram sect, Mustapher Umar, bombed office of Thisday Newspaper in Kaduna State with 12 camp gas cylinders in a bid to appease Allah. Justice Ademola Adeniyi, who admitted a burnt Honda Car, with number-plate AL-306-MKA, allegedly used to perpetrate the terrorist act on April 26, 2012, further heard how the accused person cried bitterly when he was rescued from the burning car, saying they denied him the opportunity of inheriting 72 virgins in heaven. In a bid to prove the complicity of the accused person, the Federal Government brought a senior police officer that is charged with the responsibility of keeping exhibits recovered from terror suspects to testify before the high court. The masked witness, PW-8, who told the court that the accused person had intended to carry out a suicide attack, produced the burnt Honda car, the discharged cylinders, half-charred 25 litter jerry-can that allegedly contained fuel, and persuaded Justice Adeniyi to move the court outside to inspect the terror items. Besides, he showed the trial judges who was accompanied on the inspection tour by lawyers and journalists, the foot wear the accused person discarded in his attempt to escape after he was caught by angry mob within the premises of SOJ Plaza in Kaduna State where the attack occurred. Aside Thisday, two other media houses affected by the explosion which reportedly led to the death of about 10 persons, were the Moment and Sun Newspapers, which offices were equally situated at the said SOJ plaza. Convinced that the items brought to court were worth taking into cognisance in determining the culpability of the accused to the one-count terrorism charge preferred against him by the government, Justice Ademola admitted them into evidence. While he entered the cylinders as exhibits MU 7-18, Justice Adeniyi marked the charred can as exhibit MU-19; the burnt Honda car was admitted as exhibit MU-20. Besides, the federal government, through the police, persuaded the court to watch a video clip where the accused person confessed that he was sent to bomb Thisday Newspaper, owing to a report he said did not only put Islam in false light, but greatly insulted Prophet Mohammed. The accused person in the video, said his action was to avenge the insult meted out on “Allah” by the media outlet which he said did not deserve to exist. The accused, who spoke in Hausa language, said he knew those that also bombed the Abuja office of Thisday Newspaper, saying the attack was equally as a result of the “sins” the media house committed against Islam |
