According to Chinese media reports, in
a village on the outskirts of Changchun
lives a nicotine-addicted alligator
snapper turtle who smokes around 10
cigarettes a day. The turtle's keeper says that
whenever it feels the need for a smoke, the
reptile becomes agitated and starts to hiss.
So how does a turtle become addicted to
cigarettes?
A local chef, surnamed Tang, who is helping his
boss take care of it, says it all started about two
months ago when he noticed the pet had lost
interest in its daily fish diet. After inspecting the
reptile, he noticed there was a sharp chicken bone
lodged in its soft belly, but when he tried to pull it
out, it snapped at his hand from the pain, nearly
biting off his fingers.
Tang realized the only way he could take out the
bone was to distract the turtle, so he took the lit
cigarette that was resting in his mouth and gave it
to the pet to bite on. Its jaws snapped on the filter
and didn't let go for hours. His idea proved
effective, as he managed to remove the sharp
chicken bone, but little did the cook know it would
lead to an even bigger problem.
The next day, Tang sat down on a chair near the
snapper turtle and lit a cigarette after a hard day's
work. As soon as it saw the smoke, the reptile
crawled up on him, and being the responsible
keeper that he is, he lit another one and put it in
its mouth.
The two often went on cigarette breaks together
after that, until the turtle became hooked. Now,
whenever it doesn't receive a cigarette,the turtle
starts to make hissing sounds and follows Tang
around wherever he goes, crawling up on him until
it gets the nicotine it craves.
It was fun in the beginning, Tang told the
Changchun Evening News, but now he feels
responsible for getting the turtle addicted to
smoking, plus he can't afford to keep sharing
cigarettes with it. He says he welcomes any advice
to help the turtle kick the habit.

When we first came across the stories, we
thought okay it was just one of those silly
little gossips and that it would soon fade
away and be forgotten. Only for us to read it
and found out it was very well orchestrated
pack of lies, from the beginning to the end of
it: they didn't even know where I am from
and claimed I am from Plateau State.
They constructed lies about my mother-in-
law and her family, claiming all that is not
true and that they have no proof of. Most
definitely, this is just somebody trying to
damage these families. I can tell you
categorically, I would not swap my wife for
anybody in this world, no woman from
anywhere can take her place, she means the
world to me.
The number of calls we have received over
this falsehood is unbelievable. People calling
to find out what was going on. I tell you now
and this is the absolute truth- "My wife is my
best friend, she's my queen, she's my
everything, our families are doing great and
doing very well together. Anyone thinking
otherwise is only wasting his or her time.
I am not going to allow anyone disrespect my
Mother-in-law wrongfully. I am not going to
accept this. They have stepped way out of
line this time and I am not going to take it
lying low. We would definitely seek legal
redress.

Anzhi Makhachkala have
announced that Guus
Hiddink has resigned as
coach and named Rene
Meulensteen his
replacement.
The 66-year-old took charge
of the Russian outfit in
February 2012 and led the
club to their best-ever league finish of third place in
the Russian Premier League last season.
But the Dutch coach has opted to resign from his
position, just two games into the new campaign,
leaving compatriot and former Manchester United
assistant coach Rene Meulensteen to take over the
reigns with immediate effect.
In a statement on Anzhi's official website, Hiddink
said: "This decision was not easy to me, but I've
always said that my mission with Anzhi would end
when the club is be able to develop and grow on
itself, without my participation. "Now it's time has
come. I am convinced that the club has a great
future, and I'm glad I was part of this large-scale
project of football."
Anzhi - who were beaten 2-1 by Dynamo Moscow in
their last league outing - have moved swiftly to
promote Meulensteen to the hotseat after he
originally joined the club as part of Hiddink's
coaching staff, while thanking Hiddink for his
efforts.
"Today, the general manager of the club, Ayvaz
Kaziakhmedov, introduced the players to a new
head coach - Rene Meulensteen, who joined the
coaching staff before the start of the season and
was involved in preparing the team for the
championship," the statement added.
"The club sincerely thank Guus Hiddink for his
significant contributions to the club and wish him
success in his future career."
The former Real Madrid's boss future in the game
now appears uncertain. Hiddink initially announced
his retirement from football in November, at the
end of the Russian Premier League season, before
extending his contract with Anzhi by a further
season, though he may now opt to make that
decision permanent.

A ghastly motor accident has claimed
the lives of a pastor who was burnt
to death and four others along
Ibusa-Ogwashi-Uku, while the wife of the
pastor is presently hospitalised.
Our reporter gathered that the accident occurred
on Thursday afternoon along Asaba-Ogwashi road
before Ibusa roundabout made sympathizers to
weep freely as a result of the gory site.
One of the witnesses told Saturday Vanguard that
"it was terrible. We watched the Pastor being
roasted alive. Efforts to rescue him were frustrated
by the raging fire".
The witness stated that the pastor while trying to
avoid a speeding tanker by the roundabout veered
into the bush but the same tanker also lost control
and rammed into his car which caught fire
instantly.
An offficial of the Federal Road Safety Commission
FRSC, Mr. Bassey who confirmed the accident
attributed the accident to dangerous driving,
saying that "the accident involved a blue Mecedez
Benz tanker with registration number XE 892RSH
and ash colour Toyota Jeep with registration
number EE 292 PHC. Seven people were involved
which include six males and one female."
Saturday Vanguard gathered that the wife of the
pastor who was rushed to Ibusa General Hospital
was badly wounded. She was the one who
disclosed that one of the four dead persons was

Lagos, Nigeria - A British national has been
kidnapped near Lagos international airport,
in Nigeria's commercial capital, the British
Consulate-General reported Friday.
The unnamed person was believed to have been
captured shortly after leaving the international
terminal of Lagos airport, according to the Reuters
news agency.
The car he was travelling in was attacked by
gunmen as it left the airport's international
terminal at around 8:30pm on Tuesday. It is
thought the man was returning to a residential
area of Lagos when the kidnapping took place.
A Nigerian man who was driving the car was shot
in the attack but his injuries were not fatal,
security sources said.
Spokesman Wale Adebayo said diplomats are
working with Nigerian authorities on the
kidnapping which took place earlier this week.
The British High Commission (BHM) in Lagos told
Reuters it was "working closely with others to
secure the release of the hostage. Because of the
nature of this incident, the BHM is not going into
further detail about it."
There was no indication of where the kidnapped
man was employed.
Major companies with British connections
operating in Nigeria include oil giant Royal Dutch
Shell, British Airways, Unilever and
PricewaterhouseCoopers.
Kidnappings for ransom are relatively common in
oil-rich Nigeria - both of foreigners and wealthy
Nigerians.
The son of a state legislator and four Chinese
nationals in two different states all have been
reported kidnapped this month.
Some cases are not reported because of fears for
the safety of the hostages.
Most are released unharmed after ransoms have
been paid, though people have been injured and
killed if they resist.

A Nollywood Director in Malaysia, Ifeanyi
Johnpaul Aguonu was sentenced to 10
strokes of cane and 15 years in jail for drug
possession.
A Nigerian movie director was on Thursday
given 15-years jail term after Malaysia
authorities arrested him with 2.4kg of
methamphetamines in his possession.
Ifeanyi Johnpaul Aguonu,38,was also slapped
with 10 strokes of the cane for the offence of
bringing the drugs into the country in March
2011.
High court Justice Abdul Alim Abdullah
expressed concern that many Nigerians had
entered Malaysia with drugs without fear of
the law.
"Our Country has a strict rule when it comes
to drugs,that the law provides a death
penalty for drug trafficking.If you are
convicted with a capital offence here,you
could have been hung from the neck until
you die,"the judge said before sentencing
Aguonu.
"But you've been saved from the gallows
because your counsel sent a representation
and the Attorney-General Chambers agreed
to give you an alternate charge,"he said

The Edo State Police Command, Thursday,
paraded 32 suspected criminals involved in
robbery, kidnapping, cultism, including one
Eze Fidelis, a pastor with a Pentecostal
church in Abudu, Orhiomnwon Local
Government Council, who defiled two
underage girls.
Among the suspects were also three rapists and
four persons including a woman involved in
robbing unsuspecting passengers using
commercial vehicles (popularly known as one
chance).
The Edo State Police Commissioner, Mr Funso
Adebanjo, who paraded them, yesterday, also
displayed cache of arms recovered from the
suspects.
CP Adebanjo who said the command had
apprehended over 90 suspected robbers and
kidnappers in the past one month, lamented rising
cases of defilement of minors in the state. He
warned residents to be wary of the latest trends
whereby people use taxis to rob unsuspecting
passengers.
According to him, "today we have 32 suspects that
we are parading and they were involved in
different crimes, ranging from robbery, kidnapping
to cultism and people who are involved in
defilement of the girl child. This defilement thing in
the state now is disturbing. We will not allow them
to go scot-free. And that is why we continue to
appeal to members of the public to always give us
useful information because we cannot do it alone.
"But let me also alert members of the public. There
is an emerging crime since the ban on Okada was
effected. It is called one chance. What they do is
that they always have a woman among them so
that will make people not to suspect them. There is
always somebody that claims to be a pastor with
them, they will deceive you to say you have a
particular problem and they will rob you of
everything.
"One of their victims, a lady, had to go to a bank to
withdraw N150,000.
""\We are going to work with Road Safety and the
Board of Internal Revenue so that all vehicles on
the road must be registered. People should shine
their eyes very well, they are using some vehicles
pretending to be taxi drivers."
Pastor Fidelis Eze who confessed that he actually
defiled one Joy and Anthonia both of them 11
years old, said he was possessed by evil spirit to
commit the act.
He said: "I am really ashamed of myself
particularly as a pastor. I have been a pastor at
Deeper Life for over six years but I was tempted to
defile these girls. They are always visiting me, so
this particularly day I defiled both of them."

Three university lecturers on Thursday expressed
mixed feelings over the ongoing scandalous
results from a recent Nigeria Nationwide League
(NNWL) Division 4 competition.
The three lecturers are: Akinfenwa Oluseye and
Onyeka Ubaka of the Mathematics Department,
University of Lagos and Ismail Raji(also a
Mathematician) of the University of Ibadan’s
Department of Educational Management.
According to them, while it is mathematically
impossible, it is statistically possible to score as
many as 78 goals within 45 minutes in a match,
Akinfenwa Oluseye, a specialist in Mathematics,
told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos: “it
is mathematically impossible to score as many as
78 goals in 45 minutes during a football match.
“Mathematically speaking, it is impossible to score
78 goals under 45 minutes because 45 minutes
multiplied by 60 seconds equals 2,700 seconds,
and the 2,700 should be divided by the 78 goals
scored.
“That means that in the second half, a goal was
scored every 34 seconds for them arrive at that
score line.
DO OR DIE AFFAIR: A typical scene from the

“Considering the speed of the players, the field of
play and the short jubilation by players, one can
round it up to 39 seconds per goal and if you do
the mathematics again, you will find that it’s not
possible.
“That means you will have 39 seconds to score
every other goal, which isn’t remotely possible,
because you can’t be that fast. Oluseye also
notes: “assuming it’s the fastest man on earth
picking the balls and returning it to the centre, it
still doesn’t sum up”.
He added that even if the opponents were mere
statues, the goals would not total 146 goals in all.
“It is a match between two opponents and even if
one wasn’t present at the pitch, one cannot even
score up to that number of goals because the ball
has to be passed between the players”.
Ubaka, a specialist in statistics, on other hand,
said: “from a statistical point of view, it is possible
to score 79 goals and above in a match.
“Football is a game of chance, the probability of
scoring as many as 100 goals is not impossible;
chances are that the players are not good or they
are not standard players.
“Maybe, within the first half, the coach studied
their opponents’ weaknesses and capitalised on
the slightest mistake to shoot at target.
“If the goalkeeper is not good, it is possible to
score 10 goals under a minute. Statistics and
probability prove that it is possible to score as
many goals and even more than 100 goals within
that duration,” Ubaka said.
Raji, of the University of Ibadan’s Department of
Educational Management, said: “It is possible but
there may be some conspiracy. There is a
tendency for that, but a team can score as many
as 80 goals.
“They can score a goal every 30 seconds. A ball
can travel from one end of a pitch under a minute
and if the winning team is not wasting time, it can
score as many goals as possible”.
Plateau Feeders and the Police Machines FC, in an
apparent bid to win the two slots for promotion
from Division 4 to Division 3 of the NNWL may
have connived to achieve the scandalous goals, in
order to put their qualification beyond question.
Plateau United Feeders had defeated Akurba FC
of Nassarawa, 79-0, while Police Machines
defeated Bubayero of Gombe, 67-0. All four clubs
have been banned indefinitely by the Nigeria
Football Association

NFF report on scandal out today
Coach of Bubayaro FC of Gombe, Bala Yayari, on
Tuesday refuted claims that his team lost 67-0 to
Police Machine of Adamawa during the Nigeria
Nationwide League (NNWL) promotion play-off.
The coach told newsmen in Abuja that Police
Machine had won the match 13-0 and not 67-0.
However the Nigeria Football Federation will
today make public its report on the controversial
146 goal scandal involving four amateur league
clubs.
According to Bala Yayari, “the first half ended 1-0
in favour of Police Machine with the remaining 12
goals scored in the second half making it 13 goals
and not 67 goals.
“Due to fatigue and the fact that we were down to
nine men, 12 more goals were scored in the
second half and the match ended 13-0 in favour
of Police Machine.
“Let’s apply some common sense, even if Police
Machine was scoring at the rate of one goal per
minute, how is it possible for them to score up to
66 goals in 45 minutes? It is impossible.
“I don’t understand where they manufactured or
fabricated the 67 goals from. It can only have
been done after the match,” Yayari said.
Reacting to the Coach’s statement, NFA General
Secretary, Musa Amadu wondered why there was
no formal letter written by the club to the NFA
stating that it was not 67 goals but rather 13 goals
scored in the match.
“If there was a report circulated nationally and
internationally that your team was defeated 67-0
and you heard or saw it, it is a matter of great
concern to which a response would be required.
“We would have expected that the clubs
concerned would have immediately debunked
that in writing through the Gombe State Football
Association.
“I don’t know why such an action was not taken to
address the situation immediately this
discrepancy was discovered,” Amadu queried.
He said that a committee had been set up to
“investigate this allegation and other issues
bedevilling the league.”
The Nigeria Football Federation will today make
public its report on the controversial 146 goal
scandal involving four amateur league clubs.
Sports Vanguard gathered that the Disciplinary
and Organising Committee which met for three
days, between Monday and Wednesday
submitted its recommendations to the NFF
President, Aminu Maigari for consideration.
“We submitted our report to the President who
will in turn make his final report known
tomorrow,” Chief Mike Umeh, Chairman D&O told
our reporter yesterday.
He said the NFF’s stand on the issue will be made
public today.

Edo State Police Command, yesterday, confirmed
the arrest of a young man, identified as
Endurance Enadeba, who allegedly killed his wife,
Osarumwense, over alleged failure to breast feed
their one week old twins.
The husband and wife were said to be preparing
for the naming ceremony of their twins which
should have held yesterday.
It was learnt that the incident occurred after an
argument ensued on how to breast feed the twins
by their mother. Sunday Vanguard learnt that the
sad incident happened on Friday night after
Endurance was alleged to have hit his wife on the
head with an object which killed her.
An eye witness said the husband asked the wife to
breastfeed the babies who were crying but the
woman said she wanted to urinate first. The
husband was said to have gone to where the wife
was to urinate and a face-off ensued which led to
the man hitting the wife on the head.
The father of the deceased, who gave his name as
Eghenayayore, was seen weeping and cursing
profusely over the corpse. He said his daughter
called to inform him about the incident but that
she died before they rushed her to hospital,
adding that the suspect fled when the wife
collapsed.
“He killed my daughter because of a row over the
breastfeeding of the twins. The twins are at home
now, who will give them breast milk? Why did he
kill my young daughter? This girl was born in 1996.
We were preparing to name the babies tomorrow
because they were their first issue.”
Edo State Police spokesman, DSP Moses
Eguavoen, confirmed the incident. He said the
husband had been arrested from where he was
hiding.

The ill-fated three-storey building, constructed
about ten years ago, reportedly developed cracks
all over and was being repaired annually before
the collapse.
On that fateful Thursday, the occupants of the
building were asleep when a loud bang was
heard around 1.30am. Immediately, some of
them rushed outside but others could not until
the building caved in; in the process, some
people lost their lives while others sustained
injuries.
Those who died include a couple and a house
wife, an eighteen months old and an old man.
Some residents of the building told Sunday
Vanguard the police were the first to arrive the
scene, followed by the state Fire Service and then
the National Emergency Management Agency,

While Miss Baliks Abdulamid and her siblings were
lucky, Fatimo lost her father to the incident while
her husband had his leg broken and was rushed
to a nearby hospital for treatment. The husband
died hours later.
Narrating her story, Fatimo and her husband
were able to escape the incident leaving her aged
father on the bed. Moments later, they
remembered the father husband rushed back to
the room to save his father-in-law, carried him
and was on his way out of the building when he
fell and both were trapped until the building
caved in. Fatimo’s father died on the spot while
her husband died in hospital.
As soon as the news of the incident was broken,
the landlord, identified as Alhaji Oladimeji Gbaja,
who lived next door, escaped.
Inconsolable Fatimo said the family rented the
mini flat two years ago and renewed their annual
rent three days before the incident, ‘’We paid an
annual rent of N120,000 and the last one was
paid on Monday July 8, 2013. I lived on the next
street until I had an accommodation problem and
we parked into the mini flat. The house was quite
affordable to many but the incident had dealt a
blow on me. All our property are gone and where
do I start from…?’’, she lamented.
On why they rented the apartment inspite of the
cracks all over the building, she said, ‘’the building
was in a good shape and I wouldn’t have parked
in if I knew it was substandard?’’
Also, she spoke glowingly about her landlord
“who was nice to us”. “ For instance, he used to
exercise patience with his tenants in case they are
owing rent. Also, the rent was affordable to many
but the bone of contention is that we have just
paid another rent last Monday which expires in
June 2014. I have lost two prominent people in
my life had I known, I would have had a second
thought.”
There have been conflicting figures of the casualty
of the incident. While NEMA said seven died and
seven were rescued, Lagos State Emergency
Management Authority, LASEMA, boss, Dr. Femi-
Oke Osanyintolu, said “10 people were rescued
alive and four were confirmed dead” .
Osanyintola said integirty test will be carried out
on 10 buildings on the street.’

Nothing could be more cruel than a splash of

drama was even more gruesome than his
worst nightmares.

with a knife, stabbing him with all the power she

their dear lives paving the way for her heinous act.
She poured the contents on him and set him
ablaze. On the throes of death, Johnson staggered
to a nearby gutter to put out the fire on his body,
but that made no difference. She came after him
yet again to complete the act with a knife. Even
after Johnson was rescued from his murderer and
rushed to the hospital, he could not live to tell the
story of what transpired. That was the fate of
Johnson for having a vampire as a wife.
The dastardly act occurred in Udu Road, Warri,
Delta State last October. As the law was allowed to
run its course, Rukvwe, a petty trader in her early
thirties, is currently serving a life sentence in jail
handed down by the court a couple of months
ago.
According to our source, her late husband was a
young footballer and pastor in the area. Saturday
Vanguard gathered that trouble ensued after
Rukvwe learnt that her husband had been going
out with a young girl in Ughelli, Delta State and a
marriage between both of them was in the offing.
Sources said the wife, who was in her second
trimester, got angry and decided to be brutal with
her husband.
"The man (Johnson) had gone for a programme in
Ughelli and stayed several days, perhaps longer
than he had planned. He returned home to Warri
to his pregnant wife; but the naive wife thought he
had gone to visit his girlfriend."
Sources added that the woman pretended nothing
was wrong as they both went out for dinner that
fateful day before the gruesome act. "She didn't
act as though anything was amiss. The man had
taken his wife our for dinner that evening. They
returned home that night and it was like all was
well. But few minutes after they returned, she
threw caution to the wind and killed her husband."
For Mary Anozie, a resident of Ago Palace Way,
Lagos State, what started as a huge joke between
Romeo and Juliet snowballed into the death of her
husband.
Apart from the fact that she currently battles with
the psychological and emotional trauma that may
permanently live with her, she carries the stigma
of being a murderess. According to her, "It was a
union of unending battle." The couple quarreled
over trivial issues until she accidentally ended her
husband's life, thereby making herself a widow.
Narrating her trauma, she revealed to Saturday
Vanguard that she could not explain what came
upon her that fateful day.
"People refused to come to our aid as they
thought it was just one of the usual quarrels we
used to have. They thought it was the normal
prelude to lovemaking between couples. So, they
didn't bother to intervene."
The widow remorsefully said that "it was like that
until that fateful day; after I had had my baby and
my husband claimed he wasn't buoyant enough to
buy baby food for the new baby. That degenerated
into another fight.
"Although my husband could not be called a man
of means, I didn't believe he hadn't the money I
asked for to buy the baby's food. We had
quarreled over that and he had beaten me up like
he was wont to severally. It was painful, and I
decided to avenge the beating. So, I picked up a
stone to hit him but it accidentally hit him on the
head. I watched him bleed to death."
According to a police source, the case has been
charged to court, adding that Mary is awaiting trial.
Our source also disclosed that the two children
were in the custody of the husband's family
pending court judgment on the issue.

London’s Heathrow airport
suspended both of its runways on Friday after a
parked Ethiopian Airlines plane caught fire, but no
casualties were reported.
“Both runways have been suspended after a fire
onboard an Ethiopian Airlines plane,” a
spokeswoman for the west London airport told
AFP.
“Emergency services are currently dealing with the
incident. No one was on board so there were no
casualties.”
