Coronavirus: Thousands protest in Israel over handling of economy

Thousands of Israelis have staged a demonstration in Tel Aviv to protest against what they say is economic hardship caused by the government's mishandling of the coronavirus crisis.

Rabin Square was filled with mainly young protesters wearing masks but not observing social distancing.

They say government compensation payments have been slow to arrive.

The event was organised by small businesses, self-employed workers and performing artists' groups.

Many are experiencing economic hardship and have been angered by coronavirus measures which have taken their livelihoods away. They say money they are due from government support schemes has not been paid.

While workers on salaries received unemployment benefits via a furlough scheme, the self-employed say most of them have been waiting months for promised government aid.

"I have 40 workers with no income, no money," Michal Gaist-Casif, vice-president of a sound and lighting company, told the Reuters news agency.

"We need the government to pump in money until we're back to normal. We haven't been working since mid-March through April, May, June and July, and August is looking to be a catastrophe."

The Federal Government says it in talks with relevant authorities over plans by the United States government’s plan to strip Nigerian and other international college students of their US visas and deport them if their courses go entirely online because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The move will affect thousands of Nigerians who constitute one-third of African students who travelled to the US to attend universities or participate in training programmes, as well as non-academic or vocational studies.

The Director, Press and Public Relations, Ministry of Education, Bem Ben Goong, who disclosed this in a telephone interview with The Guardian in Abuja, said the federal government is trying to verify the authenticity of the policy before responding to it as a country.

According to him, “If the report about the US is true, I think there would be very little any government can do about it.

He said: “We are in touch with the United States authorities to get the validity of that information. On social media today, anything can happen. I would also like you to bear in mind that if that policy is true, it does not only affect Nigerian students, it will affect every student studying in the US.

“That Nigerian student will come home is not a big deal, the big deal is if they will be able to study successfully and get their results and the certificates they need to get? If the answer is yes, there not much anyone can do about it. We will verify that and put up our appropriate response.

Gong added that if the policy is successfully implemented by the Donald Trump administration, it could spell doom for the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), as the Federal Government may decide to adopt a fully online policy thereby engaging lecturers only on part-time basis.

“When I saw that report about the US, what came to my mind was that ASUU is in trouble because if the US implements that and it is successful, it then means that you can do most courses online. It means that 70 percent of lecturers will lose their jobs.

“ASUU needs to understand that they have competitors and their competitor is the evolving technologies that can knock them off. If ASUU continues to be archaic in their thinking, orientation and actions, their days may be numbered.”

Troops of the Armed Forces of Nigeria killed 92 Boko Haram terrorists in the past week, according to Defence Headquarters.

DHQ spokesperson, Major-General John Enenche, disclosed during a media briefing on Thursday, July 9, 2020 that troops had at least 17 recorded encounters with the Islamic sect terrorising the northeast region.

He noted that troops of 25 Task Force Brigade killed 17 terrorists while on clearance operations along Damboa-Maiduguri Road, Borno State on Tuesday, July 7.

Even though he had in a previous statement announced that two soldiers were killed in the encounter, Premium Times has reported that as many as 37 soldiers were killed, according to military sources.

Boko Haram's reign of terror in the region commenced in 2009 and has led to the death of over 30,000, abduction of tens of thousands, and displacement of over 2.5 million people.

The Islamic State West African Province (ISWAP), a major Boko Haram faction, has carried out direct attacks on military troops for the past two years.

Enenche further reported in his Thursday briefing that 75 other terrorists were killed in other encounters with troops in the northeast theatre.

Four terrorists also surrendered to troops while 'some criminal elements and spies' were arrested.

Enenche said a total of 35 people who had been kidnapped by Boko Haram terrorists were also rescued by troops.

Troops destroyed structures and equipment, while also capturing large arms and ammunition, as well as vehicles and equipment, according to the major-general.

He disclosed that massive air strikes also destroyed Boko Haram structures used as meeting venue at Mainyakare Village on the fringes of Sambisa Forest.

Mina along the Gulumba Gana-Kumshe axis in the northern part of Borno was also hit by air strikes.

The air strikes were carried out by the Air Task Force of Operation Lafiya Dole, the anti-Boko Haram theatre launched in 2015.

"Deducing from these results within the period, it is clear that, troops of the Armed Forces of Nigeria are resolute in their endeavor to end the BHT/ISWAP menace in the North East," Enenche said.
