Michael Jordan donates $2.5 million to combat voter suppression

Michael Jordan and the NBA legend’s Jordan Brand are set to donate $2.5 million to organizations combatting voter suppression of Black Americans across the country.

The donation will give $1 million each to the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund and the Formerly Incarcerated, Convicted Peoples and Families Movement. The organization Black Voters Matter, which focuses on increasing voter registration and turnout, will receive $500,000, according to a Wednesday statement.

The recipients “were selected based on their ability to take action that can create impact now,” according to the statement. They will initially focus on cities and states where Black people are underrepresented in voter registration and turnout “relative to their share of the overall population.”

The donation is part of a $100 million, 10-year pledge that the basketball star made last month to “organizations dedicated to ensuring racial equality, social justice and greater access to education,” according to a statement at the time. The initiative will focus specifically on three areas, including social justice, economic justice and education and awareness.

“There is a long history of oppression against Black Americans that holds us back from full participation in American society. We understand that one of the main ways we can change systemic racism is at the polls,” Jordan said in the Wednesday statement.

“We know it will take time for us to create the change we want to see, but we are working quickly to take action for the Black community’s voice to be heard,” he continued.

Police in Minneapolis say a man known as "Umbrella Man", seen damaging property in the city during the Black Lives Matter protests, has links to white supremacy groups.

People took to the city's streets following the death there in May of George Floyd, an unarmed black man.

Police say Umbrella Man helped turn the largely peaceful protests violent.

Footage of the man wearing a mask and carrying an umbrella while smashing shop windows went viral online.

In the video, taken on 27 May, Umbrella Man can be seen breaking the windows with a hammer as people approach him trying to get him to stop. He then walks away from the scene.

Police said he also sprayed a message on the doors of the store.

It sparked questions as to who the man was and his motives.

Violence broke out in the city during the protests and the National Guard were called in after looting was reported and buildings were set on fire.

Police claim that the man's actions were a catalyst for the violence. The AutoZone store he was seen damaging in the video was later set on fire.

Erika Christensen, Minneapolis police investigator, said in a search warrant affidavit filed on Monday: "This was the first fire that set off a string of fires and looting throughout the precinct and the rest of the city."

The affidavit aims to get access to the man's mobile phone records for that day to establish where he was at the time of the incident.

Who is Umbrella Man?
He has not been named by local media as he has not been formally charged with a crime.

Minnesota police extensively searched through video footage of the violence to try to identify the man but had no luck.

According to the Star Tribune, the man was identified following an email tip-off. The email claimed the man was a member of the Hells Angels biker gang.

An investigation found that the man was also connected to the Aryan Cowboys, a prison biker / street gang. The Anti-Defamation League identifies them as a white supremacist group based primarily in Kentucky and Minnesota.

A search warrant by Minneapolis Police claims that the man has previous convictions of domestic violence and assault.

It was these previous arrests that officers claim helped them identify the man. They compared images taken from the incident in Minneapolis to previous booking photos.

The warrant claims that the man's size and eye, nose and brow area match that of Umbrella Man.

It is also alleged that the man was involved in an incident last month in which a Muslim woman was confronted by a motorcycle group wearing Aryan Cowboy leather vests.

After footage from the Minnesota protests was released online, there were many theories as to who Umbrella Man might be.

The St Paul Police Department was forced to issue a statement and a video denying that he was one of their officers.

Police Chief Todd Axtell said: "We knew right away that our officer was not involved in instigating the unrest in Minneapolis because we knew exactly where he was at the time - and he was in St Paul.

"This type of disinformation can jeopardise the officer's reputation and safety, and chip away at the trust this police department has worked so hard to build with its community," he added.

MacKenzie Scott, the ex-wife of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, has donated millions of her personal wealth to historically Black colleges and universities.

Scott recently noted on Twitter that she dropped the ‘Bezos’ surname and is now using the “middle name I grew up with, after my grandfather Scott,” she wrote. [b]As the third richest woman in the world, [/b]Scott announced in a Medium blog post on Tuesday that she has donated $1.7 billion to charity.

Among the beneficiaries are Howard University, Xavier University of Louisiana and Hampton University. Each confirmed that they received the largest single donation in their schools’ history.

“I would like to thank Ms. Mackenzie Scott for her investment into Howard University and our 153-year mission of serving a diverse community of dynamic scholars who come here for an education and leave here with purpose to serve the world,” Howard University President Wayne A. I. Frederick said in a statement. “We plan to immediately put this eight-figure gift to good use to support components of our 5-year strategic plan to help students graduate on time, retain our talented faculty, enhance our campus infrastructure and support academic innovation and entrepreneurship.”

Howard did not disclose the amount it received but Xavier was reportedly given $20 million. The university noted in a statement announcing the donation that the institution has produced “more African American MDs than any other institution in the United States, also federal judges, civil rights attorneys, renowned artists and musicians, business leaders, and elected officials – serving on local, state and national levels.”


Hampton University did not reveal the amount received but intends to put the funds towards the Hampton University Proton Therapy Institute, “where lives are saved daily from the devastating effects of cancer,” the university said in a statement.

Scott reportedly has a net worth of $36 billion, according to Forbes. Most of her wealth comes from the 4% stake in Amazon that she bagged as part of her divorce settlement.

In her Medium post, Scott vowed to continue paying it forward “until the safe is empty.”

“There’s no question in my mind that anyone’s personal wealth is the product of a collective effort, and of social structures which present opportunities to some people, and obstacles to countless others,” she wrote.

She listed some of the organizations she has donated money to over the past year:

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said Thursday that there are two offers for the presidential jet he has been trying to sell since taking office.

The president said officials are studying the two offers: one all cash, the other half cash and half medical equipment.

Last week, officials said the latter offer was $120 million. The government has not said who the potential buyers are.

López Obrador said the plane was brought back to Mexico Wednesday from an airfield in California where it had sat for more than year because there it was exposed to the elements and here it will be better protected in the presidential hangar.

The president, who only flies commercial as one measure in his austerity government, said the Boeing Dreamliner contains all the luxury and excesses that the he says symbolized the administration of his predecessor President Enrique Peña Nieto. It was purchased for about $200 million.

López Obrador plans to hold his morning press conference in the hangar next Monday and allow the press to see it. On Thursday, he gave a video tour of the plane’s interior, which includes an elegant office, kingsize bed, shower and treadmill.

Earlier this month, López Obrador flew to Washington to meet with President Donald Trump. He flew commercial despite the pandemic with layovers in Atlanta and Miami.

Sales of tickets in a symbolic raffle for the plane have also resumed after a months-long pause caused by the coronavirus pandemic. Nearly a quarter of the 6 million $25 tickets have been sold. Each of the 100 winners will collect about $1 million.

Experts consider it too expensive to reconfigure the plane to seat the usual 300 passengers a commercial version would carry.

Orange launches digital banking in Ivory Coast, eyes further expansion


ABIDJAN (Reuters) - French telecoms provider Orange on Thursday launched mobile banking operations in Ivory Coast, the third country where it has expanded into digital lending after France and Spain.

Company executives told a news conference they were aiming to sign up 10 million customers in Ivory Coast in the next five years and also plan to expand into the West African countries of Senegal, Mali and Burkina Faso next year.

Orange diversified into digital banking in 2017, betting that the launch of a standalone lender would give it an edge over its competitors in attracting and retaining clients.

Paul de Leusse, Orange’s deputy chief executive, said he expects strong uptake of banking services in Ivory Coast, where millions of customers already use Orange’s mobile money transfer services.

“We think that profitability will be achieved ... more quickly than in France,” he said.

The company says that growth is strong in Europe but the business is not yet profitable.

Banking operations in Ivory Coast will focus on small-scale lending to entrepreneurs, farmers and young people, with loans starting at 5,000 CFA francs ($8.88), company executives said.

They touted the company’s expertise in managing digital platforms and the speed at which their systems can approve loans - within seconds for small credits - as advantages over traditional lenders.

Orange is partnering with West African bank Groupe NSIA for the project.

African countries are major markets for Orange, where one in 10 Africans are Orange clients. About 50 million people use its Orange Money mobile transfer service across about 15 African countries.

Government has announced the extension of free electricity supply to lifeline tariff customers until the end of the year.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo made this known during his 14th live televised address to the nation on Sunday, July 26, 2020.

He stated that, government will review the early announcement by the Finance Minister during the mid-year budget review.

"In the Finance Minister’s mid-year budget review, he, again, announced that all Ghanaians are to enjoy free water supply for another three months. I intend to have it reviewed at the end of the period," Akufo-Addo said.

He added that, government's incentives for frontline health workers is, however, extended for the next three months.

Ghanaians will enjoy another three months of free water and electricity supply as government further reduces the burden of the Covid-19 pandemic on the citizenry.

The Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta who announced this during his Mid-year Budget review said it is because government puts the concerns and aspirations of the ordinary Ghanaian first.

“That is also why we further reduced electricity prices by half and completely provided potable water for free for everybody since March this year. And we will extend it for another three months,” he told Parliament, Thursday.

In April this year, the president announced three months of free electricity for consumers of a particular category, to make up for lost income following a lockdown in Accra and Kumasi due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

He also announced government’s decision to absorb water bills for all Ghanaians for April, May and June following complaints of lack of portable drinking water in many communities affected by the lockdown.


President Nana Akufo-Addo said the decision is part of additional measures being taken by government to mitigate the impact the outbreak of the virus is having on the public.

Announcing yet another package for the citizenry, Mr Ofori-Atta said it is meant to ease the burden of the virus that has wreaked havoc the world over.

According to the Minister, the free water initiative would be for all water consumers while the electricity supply would be limited to only lifeline consumers.

“It takes a caring government of the people, and with that, I mean, a Government of all the people, to offer cost-free water to all across the country: representing all domestic and commercial customers in Ghana for three months.

“It takes a caring government to be for the people and for business, large and small, to choose to subsidise electricity consumption by 50 per cent to 4,086,286 households and 686,522 businesses at a cost of ¢1.02 billion in three months. And we will extend the coverage for lifeline customers for another three months,” he said.
