STONINGTON — Local police and a family attorney are seeking help from the public in locating a New York couple wanted in connection with an allegedly racially-motivated assault on a Black employee in Mystic in late June.

Stonington police obtained a warrant for the couple, identified as identified as Philip Sarner, 39, and Emily Orbay, 28, on July 1. The department and Attorney M. John Strafaci, who represents victim Chrystal Caldwell and her family, issued a joint press release Monday afternoon asking for assistance in locating the couple.

"Sarner and Orbay do not have permanent addresses, but are known to be primarily in Nassau County," the joint release said. "Authorities in New York are actively checking known addresses and associates of both suspects in an attempt to locate them."

Trump’s polling slump with reliable demographics could mean fundraising trouble

President Donald Trump is sinking in polls among some of his key donor demographics, and that could signal trouble for future fundraising efforts, particularly with retired voters and Texans.

Since 2012, retirees have given more money than any industry or interest group to all presidential campaigns, including Trump’s 2016 and 2020 campaigns to date. This cycle, their donations have comprised nearly $34 million. Presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden has received $17 million from retirees this cycle.

A Pew Research analysis of exit polls in 2016 found voters 65 and older went for Trump by 53 percent to 45 percent. But a recent New York Times-Siena College poll shows Biden edging out Trump among voters aged 65 and older, largely over Trump’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic. Even among older white voters, 38 percent report a strongly unfavorable view of the president, with two-fifths criticizing his handling of both the pandemic and race relations.

Overall, Trump is still leading in fundraising, particularly when it comes to small donors. But as OpenSecrets has reported, that margin is narrowing. The trend began even before Trump’s widely criticized responses to the COVID-19 epidemic and widespread protests of racial injustice, both of which pushed Biden’s fundraising comparatively higher.

Biden announced this week that his campaign and the Democratic National Committee raised $141 million in June compared to $131 million for Trump’s camp.


Among donors who report working in largely white-collar industries such as finance, law, hedge funds and private equity, health care, investments and securities, commercial banking, business associations, and even Trump’s former industry, real estate, Biden holds a significant fundraising advantage. However, Trump leads in donations among reported insurance workers and accountants.

Trump holds an advantage among donors who reported working in fields typically associated with blue-collar work: agriculture, livestock, dairy, building materials and equipment, fish and wildlife, mining, trucking and waste management. But Biden has the advantage among donors who report working in electronic utilities and electronic manufacturing, retail and construction services. Biden also has an advantage among donors who report belonging to industrial and building trade unions, a traditional Democratic stronghold.

New OpenSecrets data on donors’ geographic location also offers insight into where the candidates’ supporters are. Biden has a clear lead in both donations to his campaign committee and outside spending in major cities. The metro area that’s seen the most donations to Biden’s campaign committee is Washington, D.C., with $13 million, a possible sign of establishment support for the candidate. Trump’s campaign committee has received $2.7 million from donors in the nation’s capital.

Trump is leading in fundraising in four of the six major swing states headed into 2020 — Arizona, Florida, North Carolina and Wisconsin — though Biden has a substantial lead in Pennsylvania and a narrow one in Michigan.

Texas donors have given over $18 million to Trump’s campaign committee, more than any other state. Biden has received $7.5 million from the state. But a slew of recent polls show the candidates dead even in the state, with a June 25 Fox News poll showing Biden up by 1 point. The gap between the candidates’ support has been narrowing since early June. According to the most recently available data, in March, Biden slightly outraised Trump by $10,000 in Texas.

Typically, presidential fundraising by state correlates to some degree with the size of a state’s population. Four of the top five fundraising states for both Trump and Biden include the most populous states of New York, California, Florida and Texas. However, looking at the differentials in donor dollars in states can give a clearer indicator of where donor money is coming from.

In California, New York and Texas, there’s a fundraising gap between the candidates of roughly $10 million per state, with Biden leading in California and New York, and Trump in Texas. In Florida, Trump’s adopted home state since he changed his residency to a Trump property in Palm Beach, Trump leads in fundraising by $5 million. Palm Beach is also the zip code with the most donations to Trump, with $410,000. Following Palm Beach, Trump’s biggest fundraising hauls are from Beverly Hills, Calif., and Texas cities Dallas, San Antonio and Houston.

Six of Biden’s 10 highest-donating zip codes are in New York City giving him a combined $4 million. Three are in Washington, D.C., and one is in Chevy Chase, Md., a wealthy, white D.C. suburb. Seven of Biden’s top fundraising zip codes, and six of Trump’s, have a median household income at least double the nation’s average of $62,000.

Magu: Panel meets Buhari’s Chief of Staff

The Chief of Staff to President Buhari, Ibrahim Gambari, has met with the presidential probe panel investigating allegations of gross misconduct against the suspended acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the agenda of the meeting between Mr Gambari and members of the panel headed by retired Justice Ayo Salami was unknown at the time of filing this report.

Sources had earlier confirmed that Mr Magu was on Tuesday afternoon suspended from office following the ongoing investigation by the presidential panel.

According to the sources, the suspension is meant to allow for probe into allegations against him.

Mr Magu, who appeared before the panel on Monday and Tuesday, has been given two days to present his defence lawyers.

The source had earlier maintained that the ongoing interrogation of Mr Magu is to clear him of weighty allegations leveled against him.

The source also stated that the probe of the anti-graft boss was an affirmation that nobody under “the present administration is above scrutiny’’.

According to the source, the Buhari administration will not prejudge anyone because it can be counted on to uphold justice and fairness.

Magu was on Monday arrested by a combined team of Department of State Services and the police over allegations of his involvement in corrupt activities.

Prof Femi Odekunle, a member of PACAC, on Monday accused Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN), of lacking commitment to the anti-graft war.

Odekunle said Malami’s earlier memo calling for Magu’s removal and the EFCC’s boss’ invitation to appear before a probe panel over allegations of abuse of office “seem an outcome of power-play by power blocs in the corridors of power in which Malami appears to be an arrow-head or major agent”.

But Sagay in a statement by PACAC Communications Officer, Aghogho Agbahor, said Odekunle spoke for himself.

He said, “The attention of the Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption has been drawn to a statement circulating in the media space credited to one of its members, Prof Femi Odekunle.

“The press release is the personal opinion of the member under whose name it was released and not that of the committee.

“If the committee consistent with its mandate has any view on the matter, it will be channelled to the President and not to the media.”

The Department of State Services (DSS) has said that it did not arrest Mr Ibrahim Magu, the acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The Service’s Public Relations Officer, Peter Afunanya, said this in a statement on Monday.

He added that the DSS has since been inundated with inquiries over the reported arrest of Magu, stressing that the Service has no connection with the incident.

Afunanya issued the statement after reports emerged that the acting chairman of the anti-graft agency had been arrested by DSS officials in Abuja.

When contacted, Magu’s S.A. on Media, Tony Amokeodo, told Channels Television that his boss was not arrested but only invited to answer questions regarding some allegations against the agency.

Amokeodo explained that Magu was invited to appear before a Federal Government panel set up to investigate the allegations of corruption levelled against him.

According to him, the panel is sitting at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory.

A Nigerian man charged with conspiring to launder a fortune from email scams, and who showed off his wealth to 2.4 million Instagram followers, has arrived in the U.S. to face charges, prosecutors said Friday.

Ramon Olorunwa Abbas, or “Hushpuppi” on Instagram and Snapchat, made an initial court appearance in Chicago after arriving with the FBI from the United Arab Emirates, where he had been living, prosecutors said in a statement. He is expected to be transferred to Los Angeles to face charges pending there in the coming weeks, they said.

Abbas allegedly conspired with others to launder hundreds of millions of dollars in scams targeting a law firm, a bank and an English Premier League soccer club, according to a criminal complaint filed last month in federal court.

Messages sent to his Instagram and Snapchat accounts seeking comment Friday were not immediately returned. It was not immediately clear if he had a lawyer representing him.

Abbas’s Instagram account is flooded with displays of wealth, from luxury cars to private jets, as well as videos and photos of him globe-trotting with celebrities including a Manchester City soccer player, a Nigerian singer and a Turkish chef.

“This case targets a key player in a large, transnational conspiracy who was living an opulent lifestyle in another country while allegedly providing safe havens for stolen money around the world,” Nick Hanna, the U.S. attorney in Los Angeles, said in a statement.

UAE authorities arrested Abbas last month, and FBI agents took custody of him this week, prosecutors said.

Abbas and the unnamed others in his network specialized in what are known as “business email compromise” schemes, authorities said. That type of scheme generally involves gaining unauthorized access to a corporate email account or otherwise tricking a business into sending a wire transfer to the scammers.

Business email compromise scams accounted for $1.7 billion in alleged losses last year, according to the FBI.

A client of an unnamed New York-based law firm lost about $923,000 last year after Abbas and others tricked a paralegal into wiring them money that was intended for the client’s real estate financing, the FBI said.

Another scheme involved $14.7 million stolen from a non-U.S. financial institution last year.
