Anthony Joshua is going to be in the fight of his life in less than 2 hours from this write up. Let no one make any mistake about it; based on the outcome of their last encounter, if any of the two combatants in tonight's fight is going home early, it is more likely to be A.J. This is because the 2 losses in the resumes on display, one by stoppage and the other by seemingly near stoppage, have been on the bigger man's plate. It is also because Oleksandr Usyk's pro career has displayed 2 proven combination of qualities that would see a boxer hardly, if ever, hitting the canvas: A great chin and a great defence, a combination of boxing qualities that almost all the time ensures that even on a bad night, the owner gets to go the distance. This 2 qualities explain why Muhammed Ali was never stopped in his prime, even when he lost! The 2 qualities have also helped Canelo Alvarez avoid the canvas in his toughest fights! If truth be told, Joshua's vulnerability may well be over-hyped by his haters, and it is absolutely not impossible that he has both the power and motivation to be the first man to deny the very tricky Ukranian the distance or come closest to doing so. An above average boxer (at least arguably significantly better in this regard than Deontay Wilder) with a proven killer punch, who also happens to be the significantly bigger man should never be considered totally incapable of winning a boxing fight by stoppage. With the above realities in full recognition, there are 3 questions that are likely to be asked of AJ tonight. It is hard though, to rank these questions in order of relevance. Question One: How effective, accurate and frequent will Joshua's jab be tonight? Will Joshua be somehow able to land significantly more jabs, with more power and accuracy than the 52 he landed to equal Usyk in that department in the first fight? Tough question! Joshua, before the competition got stiffer, was able to land 6 jabs a round against opponents on average. Michael Moorer was able to average almost 9 jabs a round against some opponents. Being the significantly taller, rangier fighter, a reasonable statistic by which A.J's abilities will be judged will be the jab and how he wins that particular contest against Usyk in Fight 2. In Fight 1, both men landed the same number of jabs which along with other stats implies that Usyk was able to negate the bigger man's natural advantages. Again, will A.J's jabs trouble Usyk and break the Ukranian's very fluid rhythm like a Golovkin or Larry Holmes jab would? Would it perform as a superb weapon both offensively and defensively like it used to serve Tommy Hearns? Joshua almost definitely must meet these quality standards tonight! It will be hard to do so against the slick defending Usyk, but doing so will help the British Nigerian a great deal! Question Two: How well will A.J defend tonight? Will he make Usyk miss a lot more than in the first fight? How well will his distance management and head/upper body movement performance exceed what we saw in Wembley where Usyk landed over 40% of his power punches, mostly with the left hand, which should not be suffered at the highest levels of boxing. Usyk will very conceivably hit harder tonight and had better not be able to land as often as he did previously if Joshua is to be sure of at least lasting the 12 rounds tonight and be spared a horribly painful recovery afterwards! On the alternative, perhaps, will A.J. be able to go the Emmanuel Steward/Lennox Lewis route of successfully bullying Usyk in order to reduce his punch output and hopefully wear the smaller man out? Will we see A.J., for instance, punching at Usyk's arms to get them to tire out quickly? Will Joshua be able to close down space in order to deploy these alternate defence techniques? The defence question is BURNING because it is more likely that the highly effective temple punch (to the side of the head) that has become a major weapon in Heavyweight Boxing (Fury used it to stop Wilder twice. Joshua used it to stop Dilian Whyte and Joshua was also nearly stopped by Vladimir Klitschko using it) will be on display tonight! Joshua's chances of winning tonight's fight rise exponentially if he lands the first and only strong temple shot/s and this will not be the case if Usyk can bang away at his head at will. Being harder to hit improves Joshua's chances of being the one to land that deadly counter to the temple and/or wherever! Lastly, and probably most importantly even if the above mentioned do not work so easily, Will we see an amazingly mentally strong Anthony Joshua tonight? Mental strength usually determines what percentage of a boxer's true abilities are displayed on any fight night (including over 100% where necessary). In the first fight at Wembley, Joshua was fairly good mentally, much better than in his first loss to Andy Ruiz Jnr, but it wasn't good enough against the even more confident Oleksandr Usyk who had once frustrated Vladimir Klitschko in a sparring session that didn't make the two countrymen the best of pals! Joshua will only win tonight's battle if he believes he will do things to Usyk tonight that the Ukranian has probably never come even close to experiencing in the ring before, albeit legimate things far removed from Mike Tyson's biting of ears or the like! It is in all likelihood not a so much more daunting challenge for Joshua tonight that it was for Dimitry Bivol against Canelo Alvarez a few months ago when Canelo was considered the best boxer in the world!
