The oops is like a colleague in the office. The dude is a broke ass with 2 1st degres and 2 masters degres, with one in law. He has worked for 20 years yet still strugle to pay his rent while young graduates that ve worked for just 5 years all live in their own houses.
Our lawyer who cannot practice law but study it on partime just to boost his self esteem will always bost that he knows next to Prof. WOLE SOYINKA when it comes to writting and speaking english. While he ll practilly scan our reports for errors and criticism.

What is the difference between surf and browse? They both imply looking at something (in this case an internet site) casually. I agree though that browse is more formal than surf
I was about to point out the same thing. I dunno the difference between browse and surf, does that make me a dullard undeserving of my bsc degree??

oyb: later people will be whining about man know man

i was at a dinner with a big oga in my company and he said clearly that we would face this exact problem in the future - a dwindling pool of competent talent to hire at entry level

can you imagine employing some of the people on this thread?

it will be one excuse after another and you will run mad re editing their reports, memos etal

when you get rid of them they will be whining it is bad belle

You cant use language fluency to measure technical competence or can you? Go to top American colleges and universities, the cream, their graduate program is full of Asians and Indians who can barely express themselves in clear English, yet White America still flocks to Asia to recruit them. I mean, the left brain's function is different from what the right brain was designed for.

This is just the begining of what is coming.
In a country where students or persons who hardly know how to read and/or write would go to one of these mushroom private secondary schools, sat down, copy the answer to the WAEC or NECO exam and have As, Bs.
They'll move into another private high institution where they complete the circuit.
I simply lay wret on bad leadership or governance.

obo_man: I disagree with the OP on this matter. I used to live with a very clever P.H.D student, who was dyslexic. He is white European, and at the time was working on viruses and how they mutate.

He struggles to read, yet he got his P.H.D at just 27. Now, he is working for a Pharmaceutical firm in America.

I'm sure if the OP had given him that 'primary school' test, he might as well struggled, but should that kind of test be a prerequisite for a Job in Geology, Engineering, e.t.c?

There are many great minds that struggle with words and numbers, but should those basic and simple questions define their intellectual ability to do certain jobs?

I thINK NOT.

English will forever be our second/borrowed language so you don't expect us to be as good as the owners. How many of our lecturers can speak well polished English before you talk of the students; Personaly i think its high time we adopted 'broken' english as the officially language because it is spoken at all times by all nigerians irrespective of class and status. I how many chinko wey no fit speak and write good english and their economy and standard of living is considerably better than most english graduates in nigeria.

What type of job is it and what is the pay like that it attracted such cream of graduates? I'm asking because such a sample is not representative of the Nigerian graduates.

Sirniyeh: I invited a carpenter for a job in my house. Infact, I was sincerely amazed when I heard his spoken english. This young man performed beyond ordinary man's imagination when he assisted my son to write an essay given from school. I do travel a lot, this my son confessed that several assignments that most graduates around had helped him to do scored him woefully. But this carpenter performed outstandingly!
What a great disappointment to Nigeria education! This reminds me of when i failed out of my sec. Sch., with my failure I was still the one helping most undergraduates to do their assignment. I swear! It is not by certificate. Lets stop ridiculing the artisans because they dont have University certificate. "We can do more than what your paper can do". Thank God for internet today, every time I post I make sure I dont write bad english because I learn and improve daily. Anyway, I'm proud to be an artisan! What about you? I know a mechanic who claims to be banker online. That's self deceiption. With my O'level, I've published four books. Thank God for the grace.
When my wife was about to deliver our third but last son, the doctor called me via phone, in fact, my wife later came to tell me that the doctor was very curious to know more about me from her. Why? This is because of all medical arguments we had on phone conversation. He thought I'm a medical practitioner as well. This is what many youth of today miss, they pursue certificate but not knowledge. There is difference between general knowledge and special knowledge. I thank God today I married a University secretary with 2-1. Maybe you have roof construction and aluminium covering that you need a competent specialist contact me via saintchrst@yahoo.com. Remain blessed.
This is no doubt the most sincere post I have come across on NL in a very long time, great one there Chris.

it is sad to hear that graduates failed such a simple test. But may i ask where was the test conducted? Is it in one of the northern state? Lastly are those applicant hausa or ibo or fulani or yoruba

The only thing that is expected from a Nigerian graduate is the use of good English because we know nothing good elsewhere. So that is not there, you see this scrutiny and distaste.
Re: Graduates Fail Primary School Questions At Job Test by labanj(f): 8:18am On Jul 30, 2012
This is getting interesting. I've read through every post here and this is rather pathetic. I've seen too many errors here from people who claim to know, that I begin to wonder if the educational system is to blame. I try to excuse some errors as typographical errors, but the obviously-wrong ones are alarming.

I'm always embarrassed when people make grammatical errors around me; it's like a sting or rude slap.

You can't expect to get everything from school! Develop yourself! Read good books and newspapers. Work on your writing skills.

If a highly-skilled engineer who has problems with comprehension comes across papers on new innovations and technology, how is he going to catch up? I think the company he works for is in trouble, because their competitors will beat them to it.

My 2 kobo.

I totally disagree with you dude, you have not a pinch of excuse to fail in a language we made our own for over 50 years way before you were born,we are better off the owners of the said language. We all have to put our act together and come out good, I have seen people who are fluent with spoken English struggle with literary English and that's where I think we all need to work on since we are often judged by our written English most times.

After using smartphone and computers for year you will start forgetting how to spell very common words because your gadgets were helping you auto-correct misspellings all those while.

Re: Graduates Fail Primary School Questions At Job Test by walcolm(m): 8:31am On Jul 30, 2012
obo_man: If I'm in a position to interview candidates, creativity and problem-solving skills would be what I will be looking for, rather than their ability to spell.

Problem-solving skills make businesses thrive, creativity takes businesses to the next level.

Checking candidates' mastery of words is sometimes irrelevant in businesses and companies.

no matter how creative you are, if you cannot communicate what you're thinking there's a big problem...how else are you going to get people to buy into your idea and help you implement solutions?

pls note that the most successful people in the world who are generally said to have dropped out of school didn't drop out because they couldn't read and write, most of them dropped out because they were smarter than the people trying to teach them and they felt they were wasting time trying to learn things they know rather than going out to solve massive problems that have now helped changed the world...

if university graduates are typing in short hands in a formal setting, don't know the differences between simple words, then there's a problem. it means they are not smarter than primary school pupils that are still learning. discernment is a core part of being smart. there is no business worth its salt that will employ someone like that and i can guarantee you those people don't have any serious problem solving skills beyond mundane stuff

that is not impossible, but that is a temporary situation. an analogy for you....once you know how to ride a bicycle or drive a car, even if you dont do either for 10 years, you still know how to do them
