If you happen to come anywhere around the recruitment section of companies, you will be shocked to the marrows. I was in the HR of my company between March and June and I just had to plead to be removed from there, reason being that at a point I got so fed up with the whole drama. Take a look at that attached document. This girl took an hour to write that crap! At the end of the day, she will curse me for sending her away immediately and curse GEJ for not creating employment opportunities. Mtcheew!

maclatunji: Front page kind of thread. I don't doubt you OP. People just want certificates that they cannot defend.

I wonder how many graduates can actually spell "certificate".

Somebody here talked about "Pigeon" and "English". #GoodLord!

Pigeon kor Guinea Fowl ni ..."Pidgin"

Talking about the shorthand thing, its high time job seekers started avoiding it cos it corrupt writing just like pigeon English.
oga...you are a victim of your own words. Stop being a hypocrite. It's "because" not "cos" like you wrote above.

obo_man: I disagree with the OP on this matter. I used to live with a very clever P.H.D student, who was dyslexic. He is white European, and at the time was working on viruses and how they mutate.

He struggles to read, yet he got his P.H.D at just 27. Now, he is working for a Pharmaceutical firm in America.

I'm sure if the OP had given him that 'primary school' test, he might as well struggled, but should that kind of test be a prerequisite for a Job in Geology, Engineering, e.t.c?
There are many great minds that struggle with words and numbers, but should those basic and simple questions define their intellectual ability to do certain jobs?

whats the brouhaha all about. landers dont rush to condemn these guys. its either this story is untrue or has been exaggerated to make headline *front page* i mean, 64 graduates failed that? i would rather believe that 64 or a quite number of them failed the 'surf & browse' question which am still struggling to figure out as i write. please this thread should be moved to the joke section. much as i know some dummies inevitably exist amongst us but the Nigerian graduates that i know can never be this dummy. @OP tell us, how did it happen, it could be possible that the marking scheme was wrong hence only 3 were successful. dont falsely make caricature of our graduates coz the whole world are watching & taking note. anyways congratulation you've made it to the front page

Sirniyeh: I invited a carpenter for a job in my house. Infact, I was sincerely amazed when I heard his spoken english. This young man performed beyond ordinary man's imagination when he assisted my son to write an essay given from school. I do travel a lot, this my son confessed that several assignments that most graduates around had helped him to do scored him woefully. But this carpenter performed outstandingly!
What a great disappointment to Nigeria education! This reminds me of when i failed out of my sec. Sch., with my failure I was still the one helping most undergraduates to do their assignment. I swear! It is not by certificate. Lets stop ridiculing the artisans because they dont have University certificate. "We can do more than what your paper can do". Thank God for internet today, every time I post I make sure I dont write bad english because I learn and improve daily. Anyway, I'm proud to be an artisan! What about you? I know a mechanic who claims to be banker online. That's self deceiption. With my O'level, I've published four books. Thank God for the grace.
When my wife was about to deliver our third but last son, the doctor called me via phone, in fact, my wife later came to tell me that the doctor was very curious to know more about me from her. Why? This is because of all medical arguments we had on phone conversation. He thought I'm a medical practitioner as well. This is what many youth of today miss, they pursue certificate but not knowledge. There is difference between general knowledge and special knowledge. I thank God today I married a University secretary with 2-1. Maybe you have roof construction and aluminium covering that you need a competent specialist contact me via saintchrst@yahoo.com. Remain blessed.
beautiful! i like ur spirit and encourage u to keep on improving. stay blessed!

It is this sort of mentality that is killing Nigeria.

So because he needs Engineers and Economist is his father's company he just employ those who will mess up his father's company when they go for presentations and meetings?

Please be realistic, We scream English isn't or mother tongue and all rubbish and go as far as comparing them with the chinese and Indians forgetting that if we can't dare match them in terms of creativity, shouldn't we surpass them in terms of managerial skill?

Must we always be the worst in everything?
As for your friend and her interview, it is only normal for everyone to know little of everything. The bank wanted to test her reasoning, and from your comment, I believe she messed up big time because she thinks just the way you do.

You've not answered my question on what factored their failure: was it the short text, wrong spelling or unable to define the terms or differ them?
For my friend, She made it at top list and was called for interview asap. But i inference is, companies should also consider potential. I know the some graduates we produce now are unemployable, yet why not use essay?

Guy forget about the Americans. One would expect them to be better speakers of the language since English is their "native" language unlike we Nigerians.

That is why they marvel when people like prof. Wole Soyinka speak eloquently because English is not our native language.

if it is the way all great men you mentioned are dyslexic refers to the educated illiterates we have in Nigeria, this country would have been far better than US, Germany, Japan and China all combined.

Instead of retracing our steps and acting right, we are here giving flimsy excuses.
