Pukkah: What's this lawyer talking about? I don't see anything wrong in what the Bayelsa state government has done (new flag and anthem). Is Nigeria not a Federation? Is a state within the Federation not entitled to its seal, flag and anthem?

I think more states should begin to demand for what they are entitled to under this federal arrangement, from true political federalism to true fiscal federalism.

Also, if we must take it further, shouldn't a state or part of a state have the right to leave a country and stand alone or join another country? Shouldn't this be the ultimate expression of the fundamental human right of freedom of association?

Shouldn't a democratic constitution spell out the conditions to be met for part of a country that wants to leave or for another state in another country that wants to join the country? Why can't there be a constitutional right of secession?

These are some of the fundamental questions which are beginning to stare us all in the face.

Every part of Nigeria is complaining of marginalization or one thing or the other. Is any part of Nigeria fulfilled or happy with the union? Is it not high time we addressed the basis of togetherness or express that ultimate freedom of association?
I commend you for saying the truth. At times, we just try to make an issue out of nothing. Cross River has both it's blue and white flag, a coat of arms where a fish is swimming on the coast, and it's like they also have an anthem. Even Lagos state has its coat of arms I.e two palm trees in an island.
I don't know why the hairsplitting over this Bayelsa own?

So you want us to believe that the mosaic of Igbos, Ijaws, Efiks, Yorubas etc in the case of the Southern Protectorate was the Lord's and not man's (British to be precise) doing?

Pukkah:

Lawyers will argue back and forth and confuse everybody at the end of the day. Let's keep it simple. A federating unit (in this case, Bayelsa) wants to assert its sovereignty which does not run contrary to that of another federating unit.

The people of Bayelsa want their own seal and anthem without discarding the Nigerian anthem and flag, how does that amount to separation? Why are people looking for trouble where there is none?

By the way, how come the federating units in the first republic all had their flags and seals?

If Nigeria must remain as one, true federalism (political and fiscal) is the answer. Let the centre (federal goverment) be as weak and unattractive as possible and only be in charge of common issues like external defence, immigration, customs, central banking, foreign affairs, federal policing, possibly supreme court, etc. The federating units (states or regions) should control their resources and contribute like 10-12% to the centre for the running of these common issues.

The federal government exists because the states exist and not the other way round.

Let this monthly 'begging' visits to Abuja in the name of lazily sharing federal allocations stop. Let each state/region work hard for its money. Let any state/region that wants to leave be free to leave. Let each state be free to practice Sharia if it wants. People should be free to have what they want if it is the wish of the majority. This is the essence of democracy.

Let's demystify all these things.

You must be very brilliant, been following you and you always hit it right. You just said my mind.

Most of the restiveness in the ND is cused by corrupt governors. Bayelsa should focus on developing the state first. Gov Dick is only interested in making himself richer. Bayelsans be wise!!!

Bayelsa State has NOT broken ANY known law in Nigeria. Infact States are beginning to realize their full potentials.

Rivers State for a FACT had its flag, coat of arm and anthem as far back as in the 70s

Flags, coat of arm, anthem, nobody should lose sleep over this. Most companies in Nigeria has one, even federal government institutions like NYSC, Army, Police, Customs etc.

Let's demystify all these things.

This is the exact root cause of the problems in Nigeria...but people like el rufai, buhari, Bakare, kobojunkie, demdem, eko-ile, and the retardeen crew simply ignore this fact and prefare to chase shadows of political opponents all day long...they simple want who ever is there to get out so they can resume the control of the oil wealth controlled by the federal government...
Now a see a harmless flag and anthem as a threat to their greed for someones elses natural resources...

naptu2: State-owned Flag, Coat of Arms and Anthem Law

In line with the vision of the founding fathers of our dearly beloved state and given this administration’s stand on Ijaw mobilization, Ijaw integration and the need to promote Ijaw fundamental interest, which clearly is not subordinate to any other interests, the government of Bayelsa State has given its approval to have a state-owned emblem to mark and strengthen our sense of identity as a state.

The decision was taken at the end of the 7th meeting of the State Executive Council held on Monday 6th, August 2012. Accordingly, the State Executive Council has approved a flag, state anthem and Coat of Arms for Bayelsa State which will reflect the colours and symbols of the Ijaw nation and it will be put to use as soon as His Excellency, the Governor of Bayelsa State, Hon. Henry Seriake Dickson, gives his accent to the law which has just been passed by the State House of Assembly.

This decision also underscores government’s belief that this state, like any other state, is where the Ijaws, the fourth largest ethnic nationality, has as its home. Bayelsa is home to all Ijaws both at home and abroad. The emblem therefore will help serve as a unifying force and rallying point for all our people. It says a lot about the preservation of our culture, our essential values as a people and as a race. These are the qualities that distinguished us and makes us who we are – proud, great people of the Ijaw Nation; irrepressible in spirit, a people that are second to none in this country. There is therefore need to project our culture and uniqueness as a people. There is the need to preserve our proud values and pass them on as part of our heritage.

Hence, once the law is accented to, the emblems will be officially unveiled to the public. The point must however be made clear that the step taken by our government to announce the proposed launch of a state owned flag, anthem and coat of arm is not in any way different from what other states in the federation have done. It is common knowledge that virtually all the states in the southwestern region such as Lagos, Oyo, Osun, Ondo, Ogun and Ekiti State - have since launched theirs. The most recent was the North Central state of Kwara.

In the South-South, Cross River and Rivers State are the only two states in the region that has embraced this noble concept. In the case of Rivers, it was done since the 1970s.
We believe that Bayelsa State, being the only state that can be considered as the home state of the Ijaw race, deserves even much more to blaze this trail than any other state in the federation, given its uniqueness. This much is true because of the emphasis we place on the propagation of the Ijaw ideals and what we stand for as a people, the Ijaw ideology.

More importantly, as a government, we view the decision to launch the state-own emblem, as critical to our development and it matches our drive to project Bayelsa State as a world-class tourist destination, the new frontier for eco-tourism and an investment haven.

The emblem that is soon to be launched represents a unique form of branding for our dear state and we believe it holds the key to our collective abilities as Bayelsans and Izons to stand for what we believe in, if we must make tangible progress going forward.

The present Nigerian nation proves easy to divide and difficult to lead. We have degenerated to that savagery whose hallmark is a lack of subservience for leadership. Nigeria from the onset was not meant to be one country, Lugard and co forcefully amalgated the protectorates without considering cultural and religious/ideological differences. Well, a wrong act can only survive a few tests, but will fail in full test time.

This lawyer guy should wake up from his slumber. How can he talk about disintegration simply because a flag is introduced in Bayelsa state. Cross River, my own state had its own flag and anthem as far back as 2002 and several other have since introduced theirs also. We all are Nigerians no doubt but, our right to associate is enshrined in the constitution let alone associating as state citizens created by the same constitution.

The time was ripe between 1966 to1970. We missed that chance. The right of self determination being sought by states will never come without a struggle. This struggle was commenced and killed, according to my history books between 1966 and 1970. It might be we will be able to go back same route and and hope to achieve what was lost in 1970. However, to realize the full potential of the struggle, there must be bloodshed, that is the only way.Recall GEJ once said the country will not disintegrate in his time, this means he will defend all attempts to go beyond flag and anthem. The next person that will succeed him will also se it as anathema to allow disintegration in his own era, see? Opportunity once lost can hardly be revived. I wish your country well

Nigerians wont seize to amaze us, for those of us who don't understand true federalism, I suggest you do full research on it so that you come up to date. Its true a state can decide not to be part of a country if it carries out a ranfarendum and more than half of it agrees so.as per the currency yes yes they are allowed to have their own as well as flags and coat of arms and flags. If you are still confused take Great Britain as a typical example,Northern Ireland, England,Wales and Scotland all have their own flags currencies etc but they are one country. Now the Scottish people are debating whether to leave Great Britain if it comes to pass, they will be like the Republic of Ireland.
