I drive a Honda Accord 2003 V6 Engine Car (EOD). I noticed that anytime i put my car in the reverse gear, I get a strong jerk dat comes with a scary loud sound (Gbi)with the whole car shaking along with the jerk. I had the mechanic check all the engine seats and all, but still, it does that. Please what could be the cause. You response will be highly appreciated.

Thats what i really wished to know. But when i turned it on D and other gear, it enters fine. But it has to do with the reverse only.

We need experts' opinion on this, i'm no expert. I think you should take it to a competent technician to get it serviced, as this sounds like a sign of a major problem.

did u by any chance change ur transmission fluid recently?..if yes then u probablly didnt replace with the correct honda certified transmission fluid.....

2. ur transmission is about failing...soon it wud stop entering reverse at all.

i would adcive you to replace ur transmission fluid asap..wash the filter throughly with petrol n allow to dry...then fill up with original honda atf ......if the problem persists...then u probally should be looking at buying a new gearbox soon.

nb: give a lil history of the car..fresh toks..naija used etc

Have you checked the transmission mounts? Or is that what you referred to as engine seats?

Allow a competant mechanic clean the gear filter first.

I checked the Transmission mounts, and noticed some where bad, I had them changed, but it reduced a little, yet i still get the jerking.

It is time for an overhaul. The band is worn-out and sooner or later, you will break the piston and have no reverse.

It is a service that requires to be meticulous. You have three options:

- Ditch the car and get another
- Have it overhauled to spec (there is only one way to do this and it is the right way. Anything else will either fail or not run right)
- Replace the transmission (this is a costly but short term solution)

I don't know the layout of the vehicle in question but if it is like the vehicles I am accustomed to, while the transmission is down, you might as well change the engine rear-main seals (that is if you will overhaul it). If you don't have much of a sentimental value to the vehicle, get rid of it. Honda's have questionable transmission reliability per set time (and it is not an opinion).

Ur transmission is about 2 go and can happen unexpectedly. Or it cud be the linkage,Start searching for new transmission or better Yet change the car.

i had a similar problem with my Toyota Lexus RX300. It engages on drive and rolls smoothly but on reverse nowhere
i took it to my mechanic..he cleaned the filter, changed transmission fluid to no avail. At last i was left with no other option than
change the transmission system(gear). its ok now...so jst budget for ur transmission replacement

Transmission is about failing. And, make sure you use the correct gear fluid specification of ur baby boy. Goodluck.

Awwwww. I had basically the same car but the 2005 model. and i'm sure they carry the same engine and gearbox so I can chip in here very well.

After my first gearbox died, (long story how that one died. and It died suddenly with no warning) I replaced it and used the new one for quite a while before it started another round of problems. It was having weird lag(delay) changing from gear 2 - 3 and sometimes not changing at all. then suddenly, the all dreaded flashing " D" light began. this normally comes on to indicate the gearbox is having an issue.

I had it checked and they decided to service something called a solenoid ( I frankly cant remember the name of that stuff but lets go with solenoid for now), 4 of them had to be checked individually and the mechanic didn't notice anything odd.

Long story short, I had to run diagnostics on the car and it indicated a particular "solenoid" (1 out of the 4) as the culprit. Had it replaced and still no luck. Then a guy referred me to someone who could rebuild the gearbox.

4 days and 50k later he completely rebuilt the gear box and then I started noticing that "clicking" sound when engaging reverse gear you complain about in your post. This sound was accompanied by a slight jerk ( I bet not as much as yours), but I managed it that way until I passed the car over to my brother. this was in 2009 and that gearbox is still holding on until now with the same symptoms. not getting worse not getting better lol.

So my Suggestions are as follows:

1) first run a brand new transmission fluid into your gear box and hope it helps. I have a friend where this worked perfectly for him (this is by far the cheapest and better start with this step)
2) Run a diagnostic test. You cant afford to do the guessing game here it will cost so much and you may still end up doing this. so if your mechanic has the tool, all good or else get someone who can do it.
3) Depending on the result from 2 above, you can manage this problem until you can save up for a new gear box. <-- best solution

Ways to manage this problem

1) always have the car at a complete stop before engaging reverse gear.
2) Limit your acceleration ( I know this v6 is not sitting about for anyone, but try to stress it less)
3) Try to maintain your rev at around 2000rpm (or "2" on the dial). this reduces the dynamic stress on the gearbox
4) Don't bother with gear numbers 3, 2, always leave it in D
5) you don't!!! SELL THE CAR tongue

Reverse gear synchronizer worn (high pithed grinding/thumping sound), along with friction discs in the clutch drum housing.

First logical thing to do is replace the transmission fluid with either Honda ATF Z1 or a comparable synthetic fluid (not filling station ATF). Although this may not solve the issue. There is no use to change the transmission filter at this point as this will involve removal and opening of the gear box case. It is not like some Toyota transmissions where you can drop the transmission pan and change the filter from underneath the vehicle. Although this is your decision whether you wish to drop the gearbox and change the filter, but do ensure you have a competent technician to handle it. You will need to change the gearbox shaft seals (L + R) and the rear engine oil seal (flywheel side) before mounting the gearbox back.

After replacement of transmission fluid, if problem still persists the gearbox will need to be removed and replaced or either overhauled (at this time the transmission filter and various other seals should be changed) with the above mentioned components (synchronizer, friction discs inside clutch drum etc.). The transmission valve body will also require service OR REPLACEMENT if essential.

DO NOT venture into overhaul if your mechanic doesn't have the experience. It is a specific, detailed, time consuming and expensive affair. 30 - 40,000 will not overhaul the gear as per manufacturer's specification to obtain the right result.

Good luck!

Ever wondered what all the warning lights displayed on your car dashboard means (I.e Check Engine, Service Engine Soon, Maintenance required etc). Have you been experiencing a high consumption of petrol by your car? Has your car's performance been on the decline? Have you had all sorts of trial and error technicians compounding your car problems rather that providing lasting solutions? Are you fed up?
DON'T BE.
