i'm currently serving, and the truth is the N19,800 is not always enough, even sometimes it gets paid very late when most corpers are already broke. there is a particular corper in my ppa, that was forced to go to the bus-stop to beg for money, with his nysc cap of course, when allowance of te previous month wasn;t paid until 16th of the next month.

You just have to have another source of income apart from the N19,800

I served in the days of 7,500 and was not able to save cos I love satisfying my wants. However I was able to buy a set of computer, an home theater and a standing fan. Thank God I got job before the end of my service year, I handly had t.fare from the venue of the pop to my house.

The title of this thread is ridiculous.Alawe or alawee?A foreigner would be totally discobombulated by the title. The word 'allowance' would have been apt.

bukahands: I spend 4,800 and save the rest
It is possible to live on less than than if you serve in a village and adapt to their lifestyle there.

Currently serving in a forest but limit my spending to 9.5k per month.internet subscription and recharge card consume more of my alawe. if u can spend 1500 per week like me,then u can save.its all about discipline, dont follow d crowd.let me give u one of my secret,if u want to solve ur recharge card problems, then go and open a gtbank or uba savings acount and download their mobile banking software.transfer sum of ur alawe 2 it and flex while odas look 4 recharge in far distance.u can check ma site for more info on hw to activate mobile banking app.hope it helps.corper shun!!!!!

ubaobi: while serving two years ago (as at feb 2011), i was earning an allowance of #9,750 per month. i spend #6,000 per month and save the remaining #3,750. i see no reason why anyone should have any difficulty in making savings from the current allowance.
that amount was not even enough for me to survive, how manage you save such amount?

Save 50% and spend 50%. That's the best method.

The N19800 is never enough. I work in a commucations systems company every other evening (monday to saturday). Its very stressful for me having to teach in a school during the day, then go to work in the evening in another place but its always worth it at the end of every month

I have a buka where I eat 3 time daily, 200 naira per meal, I eat 3 times a day, that's 600 naira daily. Multiplied by 30 days. That's 18000 naira monthly. Therefore, I spend my Allowee on food.

I'm surprise why Nigerians are not always satisfied. I been dey collect N9775 + 2500 from state. I'm always grate to INEC Reg and Elections.
.
.
.
How did I manage it?
After camp, I returned home.
1. Gathered all the vegetables (afang, atama, editan, utasi, arusa etc), slice and dry them.
2. Stop on the way and get some GARRI at Delta state, off I went.
3. At the end of the month, buy a rice in a bag, egg in crates, and every other food stuff.
4. No flirting, no keeping of girls, stays in the family house most times.
5....
6....
7... Treat my students well, so that the end of every week, they will bring Onions and other stuff as gift.
.
.
I'll be back

Nigerian Corpers are really suffering. cry Can't imagine myself earning 19,800 (a little over a hundred dollars shocked ) a month when school children here earn $10 an hour working part-time.. How can one possibly live on that? Ha! That country is in God's hands o.
Back in 2008 / 2009, we were paid 9,700, and I had to depend fully on that and also save, luckily I served in a village where things were relatively cheap, and my mum paid for my accomodation. It really helped me learn how to manage what I have.

I think it can be done:

@ N19800 x 12 = N237600 in a year

Budget: 2 bags of garri : N10,000 ( 1 bag should last about 6 months)
4 pkts of sugar : N2000 (1 pkt for 3 months)
Okro soup budget: N12000 (1 pot of soup per month--research shows okro soup lasts longer others)
Misc.(drinks, travel, recharge card): N20,000 (N5,000 per quarter)
TOTAL : N44,000

So, you should have N193,600 in your account by the end of service.

Depending on the lifestyle you want to pursue, a corper should not have any problem living on N19,000 a month.

Corpers are accommodated and do not have to bother about utility bills.

You are not expected to embark on any project; only take care of yourself.

If you serve in a rural area, food should be cheap.

Do not buy what is not necessary

Spend less time on the phone. Drink only occasionally.

During my time it was #9750 i saved everything per month cos i have other source of income like extra ppa for school children earning an average of #6500 per month dis is enough for my upkeeping per month and in d north den things were very cheap,#4000 is enough for my feeding.every thing is about self descipline.

When I was serving, here in abuja, I was paid 7000 by my office, and 9750 by NYSC. I saved 5k every month (cos where I stayed, we paid 3500 monthly for housing in addition to feeding n TP, so I couldn't save more), and any extra money I got, I saved.
After sservice, I had 80k in my account! cool
Just make up ur mind to save, and u will....
