A lot of Orientation and Awareness needs to be on-ground... errm Fashola needs to warn Area boys and Agberos not to collect tax/tolls from unfortunate bicyclers or try to beat them and steal their keke-bacikul on their way to work. grin grin

Hmmmm !!!, they should not try it oh !!!!!, commom zebra crossing that is no longer observed by motorist ( especially those demons in yellow called danfo drivers ), is it bicycle lanes that they would observe ?, If they dont want blood on their hands they beta not go ahead with this plane. They should first orientate drivers on road signs ( especially zebra crossing), before they bring up this bicycle lane ish .

I am having a good laugh, perfect idea in a shyte state, creates bike lanes in our already tiny roads and streets. With all the traffic laws in place commuters still deprives BRT buses the privilege of running freely on their lanes, maybe the bike lanes will be suspended in the air with stilts to ease our already congested roads off further pressure.
Abegi they should say something realistic jare.

Do they think they can turn Lagos to L.A or London just like that? I understand their intention but it will be nearly impossible to implement. Anybody who knows the Lagos traffic knows how difficult it is to control. Let's not even talk about the poor security; LASTMA, Agberos etc. Inshort, anybody who goes on his bicycle must understand say na die he dey.

naptu2: At last! This is what Ojo Madueke should have done. Kudos to LASG.

Let me quickly address some of the criticisms that were directed at Ojo Madueke.

1) Some people said "How do you expect me to ride a bicycle from my house in Oshodi to my office in Victoria Island?".

Ans: That's not what this initiative is for. You are expected to use the BRT or LRT for such journeys. However, you are expected to cycle when you want to go to the supermarket, barbershop, chemist, tv viewing centre, video club, cybercafe, bank, etc in your neighbourhood.

Oh, and the fact that you cycle does not mean that you are going back to the stone age. Rather, you are helping to save the planet, exercising, reducing traffic jams and living a healthier life.

Ojo Madueke (who was minister for transportation) cycling to a Federal Executive Council meeting.

i agree with you 100percent. Nigerians need to wake up. In Norway, u see professors, top CEO on thier bicycles. Nigerians need to change thier mentality on what riches means. Bicycle riding is good for your health especially when you are above 35years.

Its a gud idea but it won't be easy to implement.. on a lighter note, imagine LASTMA impounding your bicycle for riding against traffic grin grin it wouldn't hurt as much as losing ur car anyway.

There's something I keep wondering about. Things are bad.....does that mean we should just accept that things are bad and keep whining about it, or shouldn't we try to change things and improve?

Impossible is nothing.

The same way they ran their mouth against BRT lanes - they are running their mouth against bicycle lanes without even thinking. So much for loud mouths.

Good!

Lagos needs central drainage system and public sewage. There are lot missing that big city. There are lot to be done. I just hope the government would start thinking about such thing as central drainage system.

Thank you very much. I remember that, in 2006, Keith Richards, the former MD of Guinness and Promasidor said that the BRT system won't work cos the BRT lanes are on the left, while all the bus stops are on the right. I guess we know better now.

To the guy who said that Madueke was knocked down....that's why I said that this is what he should have done. There were no cycle lanes then....no restrictions on the movement of danfo.

Some people are keen on remaining backwards.. An administration is trying to tackle the problem of traffic congestion in an over-populated state, yet people can only amplify the perceived demerits of the idea, while wickedly turning a blind eye to its immense benefits..

Carry Go, Fashola!!!

Lol. Seriously, Nigeria is in a big mess. When those in government are so blatantly disconnected from everyday reality and oblivious of the pains and problems of the people they govern, then all hope is lost. All what they do is come up with one white elephant project or quixotic idea or the other, rather than address the REAL problems and hardships afflicting the populace (bad roads, collapsed infrastructure, public service inefficiency, inadequate/disfunctional systems, etc). Sadly, their equally disconnected (and deluded) children/wards in the diaspora would cheer them on from overseas - on the internet.

The masses are in serious trouble. I really empathise with them, but there is only so much that one can do. It is left to them to rise up and do the needful. If these arrogant and incompetent jokers in Alausa and elsewhere are the best we have to govern us, then the worst is yet to come.

This is superb idea, coming from Lagos state. It's good to learn of such future-conscious plan of the city that would eventually be a hub and a model for the Nigerian transformation. While the extremists are bombing out their spleens up-north, some people are down south, making progress. Let's hope people take the plan as well-intended, though Lagosians are open and civilised anyway!

Otioo! so this people want the price of bicycle to to increase. Who told them bicycle is safe to ride in a country like Nigeria where even escort police cars would want to follow pedestran path if they can. Or did Fashiola wake up on the wrong side of the bed again today. Well anyway, he seems to be waking up wrongly these days.

Ban okada.............introduce bicycle!
Who is fooling who?
When will govt stop comparing developed countries with ds country? They have not done their pry assignments and they want 2 introduce tertiary standards!!!
More than 50% of roads in Lagos are bad and they want an untrained bi-cyclist to compete with licenced and unlicenced motorist! What a dead trap!!

I am amazed that the re.t.a.rds hailing this quixotic and senseless initiative have failed to recognise the point you just made. They would stay overseas and think they know what's best for ordinary Nigerians who grapple with the harsh reality in this country daily. It's a tragedy, to be honest.

things are improving by the grace of God, off topic , i wonder if there's still land around that igbobi hospital area because there will soon be a need to expand the hospital very soon because of the expected influx of bicycle related accidents
Re: Lagos To Get Bicycles Lanes by manny4life(m): 2:46pm On Oct 29, 2012
I like innovations but when they aren't thought out carefully, that becomes a problem. Personally, I've not been a fan of bicycle lanes side by side with traffic lanes, it's not ONLY dangerous but suicidal. Here in DC, bicyclers get more killed and involved in Auto crash than pedestrians. Cars are guilty of knowingly flouting traffic rules, my point is, this is a good initiative, BUT unless there's good traffic education NOT just enforcement, and MOST IMPORTANTLY, GOOD ROADS, this action will bring issues down the road. Nonetheless, though not a fan, but can be good.

I COMMEND the bicycle lane idea but there are lots which need to be done. Lagos not having a central drainage system would be useless during flood and planning of Lagos. It is a very formidable yet very important part of plans of any effective city.

Don't get me wrong it is a laudable idea. That is the reason I put Good! in bold. I think you misunderstood me.

I am for the good of Lagos, dude.
