NDLEA arrests undergraduate with 13.5kg of cocaine
By Wole Shadare

DESCRIBED as the single largest drug seizure this year, a Nigerian undergraduate, Adebowale Adeleke, 31 years, studying in the United States (US.) was on Tuesday arrested at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, by officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) with 13.5 kilogrammes of coca

The arrest, according to the NDLEA Spokesman, Ofoyeju Mitchel, took place at the departure hall of the airport during screening of passengers on British Airways flight to London.

The estimated street value of the drug, which he carefully packaged in chocolate wrappers, according to him "is N33,750,000".

Reacting to the arrest, Chairman of the NDLEA, Ahmadu Giade, said that recent arrests recorded across the country, particularly at the airports, vividly demonstrate the agency's determination to make 2008 a drug-free year.

He said: "We have started on a very positive note and unless drug traffickers quit the obnoxious trade, we shall continue to apprehend them. We have successfully ridiculed their tricks by our superior trade craft and intelligence network".

The NDLEA boss noted that "this is a very special case because if not for the arrest, the parents would not have known what their son is doing abroad besides his studies".

He urged parents to be vigilant and monitor their children and wards carefully and directed that the case be investigated.

According to him: "This is the single largest seizure made since January 1, 2008. The suspect, Adebowale Adeleke, of No. 55 Sumonu Street, Ogba, Lagos and No. 648 Judges Station Road, Maryland, US., was to travel on British Airways flight to London when he was caught with the suspected substances that tested positive for cocaine weighing 13.5 kilogrammes. His passport and ticket numbers are A35823 39A and 12524472715-75.

Cocaine Record,

Yorubas are the 2nd biggest Traffickers of Cocaine in the World after Colombia.

Cocaine Record,

Yorubas
are the 2nd biggest Traffickers of Cocaine in the World after Colombia.

Please shut up, lots of Europeans especially the Turks and Italians lead the drug trade. Myyoruba  brothers are at the bottom of the list. I am not supporting what they are doing either way but it's gross to claim we yorubas top the list in the drug trade, may be in west africa but not even in the whole Africa.
Besides, hausas  do a lot of trafficking but they are rarely nabbed because they use hajj and Islam  to cover their tracks coupled with the fact that they hold power in Nigeria also some of  the  ibos and Edos  have  been caught recently. Get lost please.

It's good not to support these disgraceful acts Yorubas are committing which are causing the wrong perceptions about Nigerians.
Hotfunmi, Yoruba Cocaine Cartels are too sophisticated and advanced, Yorubas ranked 1st in Cocaine trafficking in Africa and 2nd in the World after Colombia.
Why are Yorubas involved in such a notorious deal? this is an evidence they lack Home training.

It seems you have another agenda here and we are not on the same page. I am yoruba and none of my family members meddles with drugs even if it's marijuana. Your perception is very wrong because you do not have stats to prove it. Because most yorubas are caught at the murtala mohammed airport that has the best security in Nigeria does not mean that PH, Abuja and kano international airports does not have drug peddlers. I repeat, there are lots of drug peddlers among those that travel for pilgrimage in Nigeria and yorubas are not the dominant population for Hajj.
Secondly, I do not believe that the name Yoruba, hausa or ibo is responsible for anything, it's a personal decision by those that perpetuate such acts.  Growing up, I learnt from fellow yoruba folks  that Ijebus are the culprits in every evil in yoruba land but that God I know better now for they kept saying it even when ooni's family got mixed up in drug rap. Is he  or his family Ijebu?  Stop spoiling our name abeg because we still have handsome and God fearing brothers in my clan. Why are you so bitter about us, did a yoruba man/woman break your heart?

Don't mind him/her. He/she is drawing an inference from a mistake made by one person who evidently lived in the US and may have learnt his drug pushing habits from Americans.

does anybody know if this man is using an alias. Is there a way to get a picture?
I believe he may be using a false name, any thoughts?

It is not unusual that people make false identification claims when carrying out these sort of acts hence my question. I agree that the issue has taken a rather hostile tone and this is unfortunate. There is the bigger question of how we can encourage our young ones to see the benefit of hard work and turn from fraudulent means of livelihood, be it 419 or drugs. Those of us who have to defend the Nigerian name outside the country have an uphill task. Lets ALL see that this is OUR problem, not a Hausa, Ibo or Yoruba problem, that is very divisive and does not profer a solution.
Perpetuating those stereotypes is not a solution.

Nothing like False name, He is only one of Yoruba Cocaine Barons. These people have been damaging Nigeria's image because of this their bad act to get rich quick. it's time Nigerians send a clear message to Western Nigerians that Enough is Enough, of turning Nigeria to Cocaine Haven. I know it is because of lack of home training due to family failures, but their leaders have to let them know the damages and insults they are bringing to this country, rather than indirectly encouraging them to keep on with the Trafficking.

It is easy to get distracted by other peoples comments and lose focus on the real issue. A brother of ours has been drawn by the allure of quick money and has forever dragged his (and his family's) name in the mud.
We will do ourselves a world of good if we come up with ways to make things better. I challenge everyone to come up with ONE good suggestion to change things as opposed to taking our frustrations out on an easy target.
I propose that we as a nation develop a more socialist national view as opposed to the current "market force" driven capitalist view that has widened the gap between the haves and the havenots.
Any takers for another suggestion?
Lets change the tone of the debate.

Just out of curiosity while we are on the subject of narcotics, Kobojunkie, I can't help wondering why you chose to have the word "junkie" in your Nairaland screen name. No offense intended. Just curious.

junk·ie also junk·y (jngk)
2. One who has an insatiable interest or devotion: eg, a sports junkie.

Hey guys I just thought I ask. You hear on the news all the time about Nigerians trying to export cocaine from Nigerian Airports all the time, Where in the world do the get cocaine from in Nigeria. I did some research on the coca plant which cocaine is extracted from and it's ONLY indigenous to South America. Do these drug traffickers grow the COCA plant in Nigeria ?

I don't think so. We are not smart or disciplined enough for such large scale mechanized farming.
