Bolan123: Nigerian military for years were dominated by one tribe with commanders who lack the capacity and understanding of modern military equipment and strategy, which can be attributed to their literacy level before they were recruited into the force. The report is not far from the truth. How can somebody who doesn't understand English language use English equipment?
cool wizkid,we no nigerian army lack a lot of knowledge and logistics in military training couple with poorly equip, is just that Nigerian corrupt elites and politicians use this poorly equip soldiers to rig vote and intimidate poor people

Stories like this always make me mad. Telling me that N.A lacks the basic training to fight in the frontline is an insult.
Ok, since we are not capable, I think they should allowed us to rest.
Manning check point and loading trucks is an insults to us as a people( i know some Nigerians are too blind to see).
On a good note, I think the number of widows and orphans that will have increase as a result of this encounter will be reduce.

Even without being train, Nigerians ontheir own can still fight and defeat the Malian Islamist. Remember:
1. Mend
2. BH
3. During the Afgan war, Nigerian were discovered to be engaging the Americans severely and now the US army is seeking for Nigerians to join their arm forces.
This news is false, unreliable, a product of malice and is from the sponsors of the Malian Islamist who are scare of the Nig Army.

ThREAD CLOSED!

They may have a point. Innit, Nigeria army should be in a state to defeat the UK and not waste their time and precious resources on common Mali.

Very well said. And don't be surprised Nigerians will celebrate over this stupid report coz they are their own worst enemies. They like to hear bad news about Nigeria.
sometimes some fellows at this forum needs there brain to be removed and be re twikkd. How could they easily believe those trash. Nigerian army is a force to be feared in Africa. Ask Major General Maxwell Khobe of the blessed memory. His type still abound in our army. Why was Lungi international Airport at Freetown renamed Khobe international Airport. Some folks needs to go back to history class.

All I can say is that the state of mind of an average Nigerian is pathetic. Nigerians have a disturbingly low self esteem I just don't know how some people will believe such a stupid report.

We need to encourage our people to read quality articles, we have free access to tons of articles free of charge on the internet but what our people do with their bis monthly is to engage in stupid chats, look for new girls/guys to Bleep and be hunting opposite sex on fcbk n other social media. All these only degrade their IQ.

The Nigerian Army is rated the second best in combat only to the Ukrainian army in the world. It is true they may not have the sophisticated kits the uk army display in afghanistan nor the advanced military hardware but they have (and are still) achieved so much with the little they have. The rating was arrived @ as a result of the performance of our military men in various crisis points around the world e.g during the Israel lebanon war of 2006 our soldiers provide cover for other foreign UN troops under fire from unidentified hostile forces during the brief war, our military men have reduced the murder rate of the Sudan sponsored militias killing tribal Africans in Dafur by more than 90% to an extent that BBC n CNN don't have much bad new to report from that region anymore, let's leave the west african region out for now.

Now it is true that the army can perform better had corruption not been the norm in our country however these guys have shed sweat n blood to keep peace around the world.

Try and read articles on the net. Use google and teach urself. It is not everything on stupid racist writes that is true.

El Rufai wrote the above illuminating article at the start of the year. It's clear they need to downsize staff focusing on non-military staff to free up money to be spent on training and equipment. There should be an audit of the budget as it's clear wide scale looting is going on.

I read El-Rufai's highly researched article and truth be told. they very vital ingredients of national concern from which any good national leadership should borrow. El-Rufai did not sit on thee side and merely criticized, he suggested practical solutions which government should not be too arrogant to pick a few points from.

Well US ARMY that is well trained enter somalia and could not do anything however Nigeria army enter serialone and capture it within a week.
Although am not in support of fighting any war, but they that are well trained what peace have they brought into the world.

It is so unfortunate that in this age and time, a normal human beign will believe this 'report'. When it come to peace keeping operations and ground troop capability, Nigerian troops are among the best in WORLD, not even Africa.
Take it or leave it, this story is planted to drag our men into Northern Mali quicker than Nigeria military strategists have planned. UK is a member of the UN security council, I need to hear the exploits of their men in NATO backed operations. I am not interested in 'what they did with the Americans'
if raping women in those countries and producing over 300 thousand bastards in liberia alone is what you call peace keeping then something is wrong with you. you cant even keep peace in your own country.

following are evidence in support of their
claim that Nigerian forces are incapable
of mounting offence operation or doing
basic military manoeuvres;

2. Boko haram menance is still ongoing in
the northern region. Soldiers who were
sent to the region are unable to exert
control over the situation. All evidence
suggests that the crisis is spreading to

So the British tabloid observation is in

i dont know why people continue to call on nigeria if they say we are not capable of anything. Why dont you go and call ghana who nigerians ignorantly say its economy is bigger than ours. The same country people say is better than us all round. Why dont they call on SA who is more technologically advanced. We continue to help people yet the only thank you we get is contempt and hatred. Apart from Uganda and Burundi who are just begining to be very active on the continents issues, who has done as much as we have done in nigeria.

The funny part of all this is that the Nigerian military trains a lot of these smaller nations, including Ghana. Go to the National Defence University/War College, check out the talents we have there, and you'll instantly beam with instant pride. We're not talking about officers that lead in their various fields and corps (infantry, armoured, intelligence, surface warfare, engineering), but also combat-hardened soldiers. Nigerian officers are used as exchange instructors in countries like little Ghana, and even Pakistan.

Officers like former CAS AVM Alpha flew covert supply sorties using NAF C-130s for Zimbabwean ZANU-PF during the Rhodesian war. Former Air Marshal Petrini was the best student in his flying class. Former CDS Air Marshal Paul Dike (fyne guy) lead successful combat sorties in Sierre Leone. The same ECOMOG Air Task Group was responsible for a lot of success, including successfully repelling RUF forces when Freetown nearly. The current Chief of Army Ihejirika was among the top 3 graduating student from the prestigious War College, right after RTD Admiral Francis Okon (best graduating student and former Flag Officer Commanding-Eastern Naval Command). Then you have Generals Khobe and Malu who successfully trashed the ruthless RUF force in Sierre Leone.

There are lots of untold stories of heroism in the Armed Forces, from a handle full of soldiers who successfully held a hotel in freetown against a numerically superior enemy (RUF) armed with heavy machine guns and rpgs. Their feat allowed US special forces extract foreign diplomats held up in the very same hotel. Also, some of the successes recorded against Niger-Delta militant groups are also as a result of bright officers from the relatively quiet Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) whose actions would make some at DSS/SSS blush.

El-Rufai may be one smart cookie, but he doesn't know JACK about the military.

And did you just mention that IBB and Abacha's reign were the glory days of the military?!
Fa fa fa....fowl!!!

It was exactly during their rule that the military suffered the WORST neglect. IBB practically grounded our airforce and destroyed our airpower. And Abacha? That thief and Bamaiyi either looted the funds meant for the military or bought substandard equipments like helmets that can't even stop frags or a 9mm bullet. Ballistic vests or even older flak vests were not in our inventory. Yet our military performed remarkably well in combat theatres at Liberia, Sierre Leone and Bakassi.

If there's one person we should thank for re-instilling professionalism and high moral in the military, it is Olusegun Obasanjo and Our then Minister of Defence, Theophilus Danjuma. It was during Sege's rule that the military focused on their primary. It was also during his tenure the all defective platforms for repaired, major combat excercises were recommenced, and military facilities. Kudos should also be given to the late Yaradua and GEJ who revamped our intelligence services.

In all, we still have a long way to go, but the state of the Nigerian Armed Forces is way better than what it was in the past.
