Abagworo: I hate everything cart on the roads including barrow pushers. The ban should be extended to Port Harcourt ASAP. Nigeria is gradually changing. The use of Okada is now history in most major cities, next is cart pushing before hawking.
As they are being banned, so is the crime rate of armed robbery and kidnapping rising as well. You ban okada rider and stop him from making a living without providing alternative platform for him to sustain his life, he turns to armed robber at night, surely he must survive by hook or crook !!! See no nation rises faster than the level of development and economic empowerment of the masses. An adage says until the poor man is kept out of hunger, the rich man will never sleep peacefully. So Lagos can ban all the" bannables" for all I care, but it doesn't change our shocking statistics that more than 70 % of Nigerians live below poverty line.

This has already been done by both the Lagos State Government and the Nigerian Film and Videos Censors Board.

This is true but they do not all have to be in Lagos .Let us raise that percentage to 70% in places like Abuja too. I believe Abuja will be a good place for aspiring armed robbers and kidnappers

Even if you have to hustle, let it be legit

They will always be crime...if the country has strong punishment for criminals, such as death sentence for felony such as armed robbery,it might serve as deterrent.Blame the FG for unemployment/crime,not fashola.re u saying cos we are afraid they will turn to criminals, then we allow our state to collapse?...that will be double jeopardy.

Fashola's administration is clearly bereft of ideas, or perhaps it deliberately wants to instil elitism (disguised as so-called 'mega city') by fiat - at the expense of the struggling masses. It's difficult to point to any of his recent policies, laws, and programmes that actually add value to the lives of ordinary people. If banning yam sellers and okada riders makes driving more pleasurable for privileged and shamefully self-centred car owners, what has the LASG done to make life easier and more comfortable for the vast majority of poor people who eke out a living daily? ? ? How do these knee-jerk bannings enhance the standard of living of the masses?

I would like to hear that Fashola has banned illegal taxation (in fact extortion) of poor market women, shop owners, traders, Danfo buses, etc by government-approved 'area boys'. I would want to see policies like a massively subsidized mass transport system - and free transportation in state owned buses for school children, etc. Policies that directly enhance the economic situation and standard of living of the majority! Instead all we hear is that the government has increased LASU school fees by over 200%, banned okada riders, prohibited cart pushers (and confiscating their bikes and yams!), etc. How the Bleep does this make life easier for anyone other than a few arrogant wannabe middle-class/elite schmucks?

These incessant bannings and maniacal obsession with so-called traffic laws may be justified only when other more fundamental things are in place. They are NOT a priority at this time; address the economic situation, standard of living, and integrity of the system first. Surely, this fact is lost on the smug and heartless elitist that Fashola has shown himself to be.

The Federal Government has greater responsibility for the National Economy. Pretty much all these things are BANNED IN ABUJA. Is Lagos state then to serve as dustbin for the country. The government says do not push barrows on the motorway and some Jackass comes here talking like an escapee lunatic. What next? Camels on the highway?. There are lots of poor women who come to Mile 12,buy there vegetables and put them in a bus or other motorized vehicle. Why should it be different for yam sellers?

It might be your culture in your state to push barrows or ride camels and donkeys on the highway but we do not want this in Lagos.

It may be part of your civilization but certainly NOT part of Yoruba civilization. Every state has the choice to chart their own path.
The funny thing is most of these activities are ALREADY illegal. Virtually ALL foreign films sold in Nigerian are PIRATED and therefore illegal

I remember Fashola saying he is not planning to turn lagos to london because europeans dont live there.hawking is part of our culture and ways and if we check hawking have educated some nigerians, i dont understand this guy sometimes. we live abroad he visits, we can tell when he is getting it wrong. what if the yam seller is using a vehicle to pull his cart is that against the law and since when is an eye sore a crime or offence? so if i want to move my goods from one end to another manually using a cart or wheel barrow na crime or offence? Nigerians see those tokunbo cars with towing bars...? the bars are used to pull carts it doesnt really matter what is on or in the cart and no road restrictions. Na poor man still dey suffer for nigeria while the so called big men dey mess for their faces thats why when they come here we dey mess for their faces too because in my eyes they are thieves all of them
Re: Lagos Arrests Cart-pushing Yam Sellers by aribisala0(m): 12:56pm On Dec 10, 2012
There is no part of culture that cannot change
Inheriting brothers' wives
killing twins
amputating hands of thieves
female circumcision
parading thieves n.aked
Osu caste system etc

have ALL been part of one culture or the other in Nigeria at some point. Let us NOT be sentimental.
Hawking is not an indispensable part of ANY culture and is a function of poverty rather than of any VALUES in our culture. There is nothing dignified about hawking and it certainly is NOT Lagos culture. It is more acceptable in villages than in traffic.

Once Again why don't we advocate for ALL THIS in Abuja. Why Lagos. Go and hawk in Abuja.

Hawking is an English word and there was a time when that happened in England. Hawking is not part of the identifying traits of culture of any people. You find it in Asia and Africa in Association with poverty. How many advocates here would put a tray of goods on their children's heads and send them out on the streets if indeed this is "CULTURE"

flushing agbero out of the SW is like forcing nurtw out of SW which is almost impossible. They are tools in the hands of politicians. By the way, Tokyo has been released.

Well, they must have crossed the road at some point to get to the middle walkway.

Fasola is doing everything possible to reduce the influx of aboki into Lagos. Abokis are known to push wheelbarrows of various commodities around the ketu / ikorodu / ojota axis.

U are a typical yoruba man ,always supporting nonsense. I am against hawking too cuz it gives a beautiful city a village look. There are ways to go about it without hurting people. he can decide to give them a deadline .I am not blaming fashola for the unemployment in nigeria. He thread carefully.

What about the agberos causing mayhem on the raods? What has he done about it. There is no security in lagos state and he wants to compound the problem he has on ground

This is a good development. We must allow sentiment to rule our mind in providing a secure environment. In secure enivironment we must balance three key things:
Right to life and live, security to life(include road)and means of living(availablity of food, shelter. but am supprise that the AGBERO boys are still on our road which Lagos state government is not doing anything to take them away. But they can enforce law on people hawking on the road this is wrong if they fail to use traffic law to arrest the AGBERO BOYS on our road.
