Dipwater:

U are a typical yoruba man ,always supporting nonsense. I am against hawking too cuz it gives a beautiful city a village look. There are ways to go about it without hurting people. he can decide to give them a deadline .I am not blaming fashola for the unemployment in nigeria. He shuld thread carefully.

What about the agberos causing mayhem on the raods? What has he done about it. There is no security in lagos state and he wants to compound the problem he has on ground

of all my years in lagos i have never seen a yam seller cause hold up or accident.
I would have loved if the lagos state government can first send all those stupid agbero ("area boys") out of lagos those guys are the worst eye sore in lagos state.
They are the cause of a lot of problem in lagos like the high cost of transport fees.

1) Agberos are illegal in Lagos (Amended Lagos State Traffic Law). If you watched STV News yesterday night you would have heard about the agberos that were arrested, charged to court and sentenced to perform community service.

2) Alternatives exist for anybody that is interested. On saturday I drove past the Lagos State Skills Acquisition Centre in Surulere (we took a detour because of Eko Marathon).

3) Video/films sold, rented or shown in cinemas in Nigeria must be approved and classified by the Nigerian Film and Video Censors Board. Those pornographic films have not been approved and vendors of such films are usually prosecuted by NFVCB officials whenever they are caught.

There's also a Lagos State law that makes it illegal to display such films publicly.

Good initiatives no doubt, but like someone once noted on Nairaland (i fail to recollect). is there a Strategic DNA-approach to reforming (rebuilding) Lagos?. Lagos is like a multiple-injury/multiple-accident tourist with multiple doctors treating different injuries regardless (seemingly regardless) of how one treatment impacts negatively or positively on the other. It is a case of cure one ailment here and expose another there. unfortunately the sheer size of unskilled (non tax-paying) human capital in Lagos makes it difficult to sustainably empower youths without the growing pressure from the continuing inflow of people from different parts of Nigeria in search of greener pastures.

The greater challenge is not implementing reformative initiatives.. it is ensuring that such initiatives do not create newer problems as it solves present ones.
I can understand arresting Area-boys, but charging them to court/community service.. Tax-payers monies can be used more constructively, (and with synergy) besides I (sincerely) doubt the number of Agberos arrested has created a dint in their population (and unfortunate negative impact on general society). LASG has simply pushed the Agberos from one source of livelihood into another (dangerous) source of livelihood.. they will simply constitute a dangerous nuisance to people who actually contribute to LASG's continued existence. with paltry security forces and under-used CCTV.

LASG can re-prioritize their priorities. Tackling the easiest and most visible should be swapped for tackling the fundamental and deep-impacting. LASG is treating symptoms rather than foundational causes. I doubt this will be sustainable without huge financial implications (debts more like) to LASG

My humble thoughts

For the most part I agree with you. I think your observations are the reason for the much criticised rehabilitation, repatriation or jail strategy.

The government realises that it cannot send every arrested person to jail (jail sometimes serves as a criminal training centre, it costs the government a lot of money to maintain prisoners in jail, the jails are already overcrowded and it would be a public relations disaster), so it gives them options of attending the skills acquisition centre or repatriation to their home state.

These agberos were ordered to do community service (sweeping, raking, cutting grass) instead of a custodial sentence for the same reasons mentioned above.

Lagos State is a state within a federation. It is not a country. Therefore, it cannot prevent citizens of other states within the federation from migrating to Lagos. What the government can try to do is to remove some of the things that attract people to migrate to Lagos. Last year there was a famine in Niger Republic. I read, in a newspaper article, that criminal gangs were recruiting people from Niger, promising them jobs as okada riders in Lagos (in exchange for a fee of course) and dumping them on the streets of Lagos. This year, the State Government restricted the activities of okada riders. Similar laws have also restricted the activities of hawkers and beggars and many of them have been repatriated to their home states.

I think the lasg's extension agencies have failed big time, all orientations have always been a crash and burn thing. Still a thought comes up, for as a friend would exclaim in regards the final nails being placed on our nations agriculture, its little actions (by d gov) as these that have obstructed a feeble and unsustainable but working solution to a basic agricultural problem of transportation, with no alternative solution in sight. I only pray 4 d hungry 4 when they'll strike nt even our collective thought will stop their resolve.

bolayei: I remember Fashola saying he is not planning to turn lagos to london because europeans dont live there.hawking is part of our culture and ways and if we check hawking have educated some nigerians, i dont understand this guy sometimes. we live abroad he visits, we can tell when he is getting it wrong. what if the yam seller is using a vehicle to pull his cart is that against the law and since when is an eye sore a crime or offence? so if i want to move my goods from one end to another manually using a cart or wheel barrow na crime or offence? Nigerians see those tokunbo cars with towing bars...? the bars are used to pull carts it doesnt really matter what is on or in the cart and no road restrictions. Na poor man still dey suffer for nigeria while the so called big men dey mess for their faces thats why when they come here we dey mess for their faces too because in my eyes they are thieves all of them

Even if ur only visit to developed countries is by watch American films, av u seen people hawking/ pushing cart on highways/Express roads?

So as history states; that some black people don't wear cloths, does that gives them the liberty to continue to live naked because its part of their culture? Why don't u people have an eye for civilisation and development

So in the aboard u live, what type of cart do they use? And perhaps if u are a big man in Lagos, u will indulge urself in such thing like pushing cart on highways/Express roads because u wanna go get yam?

Must gov spoon feed you at all time?

Don't they know what is best for them and their business instead of putting their lives at risk?

Can't they all come together and get a bus for transporting their product? At least they make gain.

Going by ur last sentence: Would you hold the nation/people or consumers to ransom if corrected, your improper way of handling agricultural produce and aswell putting your life at risk to devalue Governments ability to protect it citizens life and properties?

Erm, nobody's holding no1 to ransom my brother (yet), but when no way exists and people create 1 do u then call em nuisance even if 4 some ppl d end justifies the means. Truth is in extension education, when initiating a program you give not only time but an alternative that could probably suite them as a clientel cause at the moment thats who they are. This is beyond a traffic thing it should also involve the agric ministry, and immigrations (if they exist). Or dont u think that if we could negotiate with mend that this guys r worth a talk to and it wont involve expending silly stipends. Its exactly cause we are not feed anything by any gov or president that people will push barrow 4rm mile 12 to ikorodu abi wetin 4 happen if train and buses dey?
