Right guys, I know there are some people who avoid drinking beer based on their ethical, religious and a whole lot of obligations. However non-alcoholic beer brands are increasingly being made available in the market. For example, Becks and Bavaria have these brands for those that want to enjoy the fun of beer but their obligations would not permit the comsumption of alcoholic beer.

I thus ask would you go for a non-alcoholic beer brand? I need honest opinions based on economic, socio-cultural, legal and other relevant perspectives. I am even more interested in what Christian and Islamic scholars have to say about these non-alcoholic brands. Does it go counter to your religious obligations.

For family people who avoid drinking beer because of the kids in the house, do you think the non-alcoholic brands provide a good option? Do you think the non-alcoholic brands will have the same negative influence on your kids as the alcoholic brands that you avoid? Would you let your kids drink a non-alcoholic beer?

For those interested in political issues, do you think government should place as much taxes on non-alcoholic beer as alcoholic beer considering the fact that it is produced by the same organisations? Do you think laws should be made to prevent young people below the age of 18 from consuming this?

For those who love alcoholic beer because of the feeling it gives, do you think buying non-alcoholic beer is a "waste of money" ?

Please I need your opinion on this.

Is it O.K. to drink non alcoholic beer?

The basic ruling on food and drink is that things are halaal, except for those which are specifically described in sharee’ah as being haraam, such as alcoholic drinks. If the drink includes any intoxicating substance, it is haraam. On this basis it may be said that beer (a drink made from barley), if it is intoxicating when drunk in large amounts, then it is not permissible to drink it. It was reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Every intoxicating substance is haraam.” (Narrated by al-Bukhaari, al-Ahkaam, 6637) And it was narrated that ‘Aa’ishah said: “The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: ‘Every intoxicating substance is haraam, and whatever intoxicates in large amounts, a handful of it is haraam.’” (Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, al-Ashribah, 1789; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh Sunan al-Tirmidhi, 1521). Al-Teebi said: “ ‘a handful of it’ is an expression meaning a small amount.” And Allaah knows best.

OP is doing market research for a new product I am sure. You can see the answer up there, the basic rule is that if it is proven that it is completely non-alcoholic, there is no blame on the drinker.

However, going by the fact that the name "beer" is attached to the product, many Muslims would stay clear of the product altogether even if Islam permits them to drink it because of its non-alcoholic nature.

Allah knows best.

In islam, what is termed as beer is any substance that affect someone mentality(meaning drunk). One can take a beer provided that he's 100% normal and 100% intoxic, not be confused with half drunk. And any substance that makes someone abnormal in senses is beer, for example even a smell of a flower that can make u abnormal in senses its beer, so this case u have to abstrain from it except in medical condition or anything similar to that.

Yes, it is still Haram. As non-alcoholic beers contain 0.5% of alcohol. Now, I know you really want to taste it but the only way you can is if you can convert to Christianity or other religions besides Islam or, you will be going against the will of Allah. If I were you, I'll just convert.

It is what the drinks does rather than it's name which is important. All intoxicants are prohibited for Muslims. If a drink doesn't contain intoxicants or other substances that are haram it's brand name alone cannot make it haram.

The term non alcoholic beer is a misnomer, it does not exist.
Same goes for non alcoholic wine.
For a drink to be termed wine or beer it has to contain alcohol.

Islam came to protect FIVE THINGS: (1)your honour (2) your wealth (3) your blood (4) your person and (5) YOUR BRAIN, that is, anything that is going to make you MISBEHAVE for a second it is prohibited...this what made alcohol haram...ISLAM IS A STANDARD RELIGION AND I AM PROUD TO BE A MUSLIM...just go through islam philosophy with a rational mind you find it standard

I strongly disagree with both of you sirs.
1. There are non-alcoholic wines with 0.0% alcohol in it. There are also beers with 0.0% alcohol. Maltina is a type of beer. For a list of non alcoholic beers and wine on sale, check this website: http://alcoholfree.co.uk/.
2. Oga Sunnymoore, am sorry you have no jurisdiction to speak for Islam.

Alcohol-free brew surprise hit in beer-loving Japan

There are many beers on the market from all over the world that are labeled as non-alcoholic, but brewer Kirin Holdings, which makes "Kirin Free," claims its brew is the only one with 0.00 percent alcohol.

In Japan, alcoholic drinks are defined as those that are 1 percent or more proof.

"Those drinks, albeit in very small amounts, contain alcohol," said Kirin spokesman Kuniaki Tamai, referring to the drink's competitors.

"Restaurants and shops had not been able to loudly tout them as non-alcoholic drinks either."

Non-alcoholic beer is a niche product in Japan, home to several brewers such as Asahi and Sapporo whose drinks are as popular at home as abroad.

Japanese businessmen and executives regularly go out for drinks after work, and beer has long been one of the country's most popular alcoholic drinks.

But Kirin, one of Japan's biggest brewers, said demand for its drink, which it advertises as a soda with a beer-like taste, has been overwhelming.

Earlier this week, it ran adverts in newspaper apologizing for the shortage of "Kirin Free" due to stouter-than-expected demand.

Kirin said demand was especially strong among drivers and pregnant women who did not want to take in alcohol. A few years ago, the government introduced stiffer penalties for drunk driving.

"We are hearing from pregnant customers who say they like it because it has no alcohol content," said Kirin's Tamai.

A 350ml can of Kirin Free costs around 150 yen ($1.5), while regular beer is priced at about 220 yen ($2.2).

The popularity of the new product is a rare bright spot for Japan's beer industry, which faces sober reality at its main market. The country's beer market shrank by 15 percent in volume in the past decade amid aging demography and diversifying taste. ($1=98.30 Yen)

Haram means prohibited.
Would it have been a bad idea if it was written as "prohibited" instead of "haram", most of us have no knowledge, what it means??.
