well folks hav told me they got suspended torrenting stuff like new movies and apps wit starcomms. seeing dt screenie of lynx downlg a movie was surprising.

personally iv ditched transmission 4 deluge a long time ago, used 2 hav issues seeding.
Re: Ubuntu Linux by blackweaver(m): 12:27am On Apr 29, 2011
yeah NEW movies, not so new movies that the whole world has watched is less likely to cause those issues; i'm not sure but i suspect that those people get disconnected when the intellectual property owners complain

By the time you've used a Mac you'll know that it's completely worth it and plus you don't have to worry your head about any virus wahala. cool wink
Re: Ubuntu Linux by 4llerbuntu(m): 11:28pm On May 03, 2011
did i hear u say 100k?

last time i checked prices in nigeria those things were sold for over 250k.

hell no, i think i kinda like free, esp when the free works better for me than any of the paid stuff
Re: Ubuntu Linux by blackweaver(m): 12:48am On May 04, 2011
abi o and this way i don't have to worry about the consequences of tweaking my hardware to my content;
last weekend i upgraded my netbook to 500gb (from 160gb) now if i had a mac would i have the liver to even try something like that?
besides with linux we don't have to fear viruses any more than on macs - and we can try many more oses without fear of voiding our warranty (or care for that matter seeing that it doesn't cost anywhere near the price)

Sorry to bust your bubble but there are plenty of viruses and spyware targeted specifically at macs. Since Windows Vista, the mac has been by far the weakest platform security-wise. They are almost trivially easy to hack for anyone who knows what he is doing. And Safari is a complete joke, its even less secure than ie6!

Couple this with the fact that most mac users (like you) are blissfully unaware of the malware threat and often foolishly ignore even obvious signs of infection (I can't have a virus, I use a mac!), you may be better off running windows XP. At least then you'll have to be careful.

If I were you, I'll go and look for an antivirus program fast.

Upgrading is just the same way you upgrade every other Computer System, as long as you know what you are doing. I recently upgraded my Hard Disk form the stock 250GB to a Seagate Momentus XT 500GB Hybrid SSD Drive! and replaced my Stock 4GB Ram with a Crucial 8GB DDR3 RAM Kit with no problems at all grin (My Mac is now on some serious steriods!)

As for the Safari Browser issue, it is constantly updated to protect from such exploits and besides you have options like Google Chrome (Safer Browser at present) and Firefox.
I suggest you read this article http://www.macworld.com/article/156744/2010/12/2011_viruses.html to have a clear understanding on the perception of Mac specific Malware,so far only 28 known Trojans,0 Viruses and 0 worms have been recorded. Trojans are NOT THE SAME as viruses. Viruses spread without user interaction, but Trojans only infect systems when they trick the user into installing them. Trojans often masquerade as some kind of illicit software. For example, all known Mac trojans present themselves as pirated software, or as apps needed to view pornography.

Mac's are definitely not as secure as Windows, but they are whole lot Safer! tongue

@ double n, u actually want to start a mac vs linux debate on a linux thread with long term linux diehard techies?

create a mac thread or go to a windows thread o. u can oppress dem there. here u just anor sucker running a closed version of bsd in a closed ecosystem, on fancy mostly underpowered hardware and paying through your nose for it.

at least u got blinged hardware and props for using Apple . lol
Re: Ubuntu Linux by blackweaver(m): 9:57am On May 04, 2011
@doubleN well maybe you're right, however cost is still a mojor deterrent; if you could send me a mac foc i will join you in broadcasting all the wonderful merits of the system, in the mean time those of us who aren't willing to shell out over x10 minimum wage, we'll just chill with our pcs and enjoy our free linux os

I am not starting any battle of sorts, just trying to clear some misconceptions. I have been a user of Linux Mint and Ubuntu and i have nothing against them.

Re: Ubuntu Linux by 4llerbuntu(m): 12:55pm On May 05, 2011
so whose installed and been using NATTY!!?

i have and well, its been a new experience. totally.

the system itself works a dream, literally the fastest thing iv seen since puppylinux. cool

the desktop takes a learning curve.

err, what do i not like? i have been conditioned to having a menu where u click thru to search. using the dash is a bit clumsy, but i seem to be adapting now.

havent found any dreaded bug, YET grin grin grin grin

think they should have incorporated zeitgeist into the dash search and now that there is a serch bar, why not have it properly index my files like win 7. i have a ton of docs and often need to search for phrases in docs in order to locate them.

or is there anyone who knows how to do that easily? i use an app called catfish and it does ok, but it takes a few clicks to start it and its more search than indexing.

anyway, what are your views?
Re: Ubuntu Linux by lynxnoon(m): 1:26pm On May 05, 2011
