Burnt Structures In Ebute-metta Need New Building Approvals – Fashola by obisage(m): 6:58am On Jan 11, 2013
LAGOS — LAGOS State Governor, Babatunde Fashola, SAN, yesterday said owners of structures razed in Market Street, Ebutte-Metta, Yaba Local Government would not be allowed to rebuild their structures until they got genuine building approvals.

Night fire had on Tuesday razed over 50 structures and displaced about 3, 500 residents of the area.

The governor, after inspecting the damage caused by the Tuesday inferno, said “This is the beginning of our separation plan which is to demarcate the traders from the residents.

“It is time for everyone to begin to move their property away from this place and relocate to the new accommodation provided by the government in Ikosi axis of the state. We have also included over 3,000 houses along with the new location.

“All these would be delivered very soon. The place is well constructed with all the necessary amenities. We cannot allow you to rebuild here until we clear this place out. And no one would be allowed to rebuild his stall without acquiring a genuine town planning approval from the state Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development.”

There is this conspiracy theory that the state government was responsible for setting the place on fire to eject the poor dwellers and re-allocate to political croonies, the case of Tejuosho and Oyingbo markets that mysteriously went up in flames are particular examples.

Fire disaster has been a recurring incident in that market, the others you mentioned, long b4 d present democratic dispensation with resultant loss of lives & properties. Should a responsible govt let trend continue?

I agree with lovinghubby about his theory. But what i am not so sure of is if they allocate such properties to their allies and political cronies. But yes, they actually initiate those fires to displace the incumbent occupants beacuse just telling them to go like that is almost impossible

waterside land is prime-land anywhere in d world. I will not be surprise goverment agents started d fire. Makoko has been in d news of late, western tv stations are obsess and facinated about this slum that embarasses Fashola. The slum makes all Fashola's good works pales into insignifance.

Fire incidence occurs everyday and anywhere, the victims reorganise and move on with there lives. In one breath you tell the Ebute-metta victims that where they will relocate to is under construction and in another that they can't reconstruct and continue their lives without town planning approval that costs N500,000.

For your information, the Tejuosho fire was in Dec. 2007 & Oyingbo in 2005, both under Tinubu/Fashola administration.

Lol. I am sure you are still a student. Because if you are a trader, you would understand the politics behind structures meant for commercial purposes . Or do you wish to call the recurring fire incidences and revamping of such structures happenstances?

Fashola on point.

Change is always difficult to adjust to.

Every reasonable person knows that if Makoko and the burnt plank market at Ebute meta were to be in Singapore, Malaysia, USA, UK even Dubai, it will never remain the same. You will most likely see a wonderful architectural masterpiece or one of the best estates in the world.

So, if we all know this, let us stop unnecessary ranting.

The workshop should be moved to another planned place.

It is high time we started planinning things in Nigeria.

Our govts do not have and do not intend to implement policies to financialy empower the vulnerable and poor in our society. You build mega people that can build mega cities.
It's an open secret that Lagos state govt has been desiring to eject and reposses the Ebute-metta/Makoko water fronts but not by ejection by fire.
In the case of the Oyingbo market, the women mentioned the name of the Tinubu thug that ignited the fire.

Take it easy with this your mighty liessssss, aba.... your lie fit cause WW3, didn't fashola warn the residents there that its risky, dangerous and not safe to live in poorly, dirty constructed wooden houses on water. He provided another location for them to move to as alternative, that is not enough, now they are victims of their problems and you are accusing another person lol...... Nigerians seems to be the worst people to govern, most nigerian IQ are low(0)...

^^^ There was no need for the bolded reply, we have sound eye sight.
There was no provision for temporary shelter and feeding & he issues no reconstruction order, that my friend strenghtens the conspiracy theory.
And if they could afford buildings with approved plans they won't be living there, using unpleasant circumstances as means of ejection is inhuman at least our low IQ understands it.

And this was the 1st fire incident @ that mart? BRF/BAT was the one that caused electric spark in 1 of the shops in that particular case?
Have you been inside that oko-baba before?
In any case such market/farm as that Ebute metta sawmill should not reasonably be left in centre of a city. Tinubu tried relocating them but the silly PDP politics stalled it.
