@OP, why d heck do u need to apologise? This is d bitter truth bros...unless viewers and dislikers are living in another planet, otherwise, in reality, some courses are just as useless as houseflies. If i could remember clearly, Dele Momodu studied Yoruba Language, now, he is a journalist...I just wonder whether Wizkid studied Music at school yet those who have spent ageless years studying music at school still cannot even compose two lines of melodiuos songs...see, send ur pikin go study Igbo language for four years n thousands of dollars (or milions of naira), PERFECT INVESTMENT 2 Likes |

Idriswhite: I publicly apologise for the post that rile up many viewers. It's a debate a friend brought up for deliberation.Am very sorry for whatever thing this post might have caused.Pls accept my sincere apology.I love you all it's ok Idris. Go and sin no more but beyond d sentimental side of it, i think u need to read broad in order to see things from their broader view, and not those twisted and nincompoopish way of average Naija undergraduate that sees nothing good in what he/she is learning, not to mention others'. i have been there, so i know majority of respondents to this thread have spoken from the sadly narrow and confused view that's popular with Nigerians youth nowadays. For anybody that knows better, it's quite easy to believe that Nigerians are actually circa 68 points on IQ rating, just from opinion on this thread. More painful and worrisome is that most are supposed to be in or have passed through one university/higher institution of learning or another. For those who are teachable, the problem with those courses is not themselves, but the national plan(lessness) in place. they are all vital ingredients in national development programmes, both on micro and macro scale. i know this view is still foreign to many of you, bout for a start, i will refer you to major national development projects like Project Paper Clip and Project Manhattan amongst many others for and from other nations, then you will see how these knowledges fit together to solve the very giant puzzle of projects/programmes. It is just like calling the salt or maggi cube in your kitchen a waste when it is solitary, but when you bring it together with other ingredients they make a very great meal. Even the supposedly choice courses are only part of the big circle that is ever dependent on those "smaller" ones. I cant type for long on this. To educate undergraduates/graduates on importance of other courses is a big re-education task that shouldn't come free of charge on blogspots, if the so called graduates/undergraduate is not intelligent enough to have deciphered this in course of his/her study. Bottom line is that it is a big circle of life there, there's a place for everybody to fit in and play his/her role. If some people are not fitting in, the the circle of life will start dying gradually because it becomes deficient from their needed contributions. |

Are you making six figure salary? Nigga how dare you say political science is a waste of time to study. i m going to refrain from calling you names, but nigga u re one dumb nigga. Where did you get the notion that the face you read political science you have to be a politician. To go ahead and study Yoruba in the university is not a waste of time either. You don't have the slightiest idea of the advantage of a university degree.I am sure you most have read one of the courses mentioned by the poster, or why this so much rage? 1 Like |

Idriswhite: People go to university to study a course in hope of future amelioration. However, most of the many courses that used to be hot cake in time past are whitewashed with the influx of many people who just learn the course outside university in a matter of months.Going to university to study the following courses many deem to be a waste of time. The courses are: Computer science is not a course everybody can enter as u errorneously said. If you went to NIIT or Aptech and did 2 years and you think that makes you a computer specialist then why not use that certificate to look for work in the public sector or multinationals? Go to chevron, Agip, USAID, British Council with an NIIT 'masters in whatever'. Lastly go try and register with the the Computer Professionals Registration Council (CPN) with that NIIT crap. |

This argument has dragged on for too long. Here is how to know if your degree is a waste of time: Take a trip overseas, then whenever or wherever there is a recruitment going on, present your Nigerian certificate. Let's see if anyone will hire you with that "piece of paper". Tell the result of this experiment |

Re: University Courses That Are Waste Of Time by Nobody: 4:42pm On Jan 12, 2013 |
Even in advanced countries, certain courses do not fair well as much the technical and professional courses. We will always need doctors, engineers, nurses, lawyers, accountants etc and such professions are highly regulated to limit entry and maintain exclusivity. This happens even in advanced countries. For example, someone with a degree in music doesnt necessarily become a succesful musician or the next May-D or D'banj. Music is based on talent. There are some courses that should be taken as hobbies especially in the Nigerian environment. Also, an individual who studies political science, what are your opportunities for employment. Remember that not only those who study political science can venture into politics but only Engineers that study 4 or 5 years in the university will be allowed to design buildings (moreso in a state like Lagos) and only doctors that studied in the teaching hospital would be allow to treat patients. The key is exclusivity of some professions. |
