Governor Akpabio Sacks Commissioner , Retires Perm. Sec by Nobody: 9:42am On Jan 16, 2013
The Akwa Ibom State Government on Tuesday relieved the Commissioner of Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Dr. Helen Ukpabio, of her duty. The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Mrs. Arit Okpo, was also retired.

Though, no reason was given for their dismissal, it was gathered that the state governor, Mr. Godswill Akpabio, was angry at the manner the commissioner and the permanent secretary handled the organisation of the Armed Forces Remembrance Day in Uyo on Tuesday.

A statement by the Commissioner for Information, Mr. Aniekan Umanah, said, “His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Chief Godswill Akpabio, has relieved the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Dr. Helen Ukpabio, of her appointment as Commissioner with immediate effect.

“Similarly, the Governor has also approved the retirement of the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Mrs. Arit Okpo.

“The Governor thanks all affected officers for their services to the State and wishes them success in their future endeavours.”

Say you do not know the reason instead of making it seem like the man woke up and just started firing people.

What's this anti-women frenzy going on? Jonathan sacks female immigration chief and replaces her with a man and now akpabio is sacking two females from his administration. By the way what does "commisioner of women affair" have to do with organising "armned forces remembrance day".

The only Governor in Nigeria who has neither sacked any member of his cabinet or reshuffled same is Governor of Lagos State , Tunde Fashola, instead he appointed a 1997 graduate as Permanent Secretary and ASP ADC to his "OGA" and ACN leader Commissioner. He himself being an installed "boy" cannot act on his own. Shameful.

Exactly the question I asked that Tuesday in Uyo when I heard it. If AFRD were at all within the ken of a state government, would it not rather be the function of the Special Duties ministry? Gov. Akpabio, please conduct your business with savvy and wisdom, so your people don't start suspecting you of being childish.
