Jonathan’s visit to police college meaningless — House C’mitte

January 20, 2013 by JOHN AMEH and ALLWELL OKPI 104 Comments

The House of Representatives Committee on Police Affairs has criticised President Jonathan’s visit to the Police College Ikeja.

The Chairman of the committee, Mr. Usman Kumo, described the President’s action as “meaningless.”

Kumo stated that the visit might be counterproductive because Jonathan seemed to suggest that he was not aware of the dilapidated state of police formations and barracks in the country.

Kumo noted that whatever aim Jonathan wanted to achieve with the visit had been defeated, as “he simply displayed that he has not been in touch with what has been happening to the police.”

He added, “Who does not know that all police colleges in Nigeria are in a dilapidated state and uninhabitable?

“Why did he go to Lagos? Was it because a television station aired the poor state of affairs there.

“All police colleges, barracks and formations in Nigeria are dilapidated and uninhabitable.

“What about Gwoza? What about Jos? Are these places better?

“Did he go to Lagos because it is cosmopolitan?

“It is meaningless.”

Asked whether the committee would investigate the decay in the college, Kumo said it would serve no purpose.

According to him, it was public knowledge that the Force was not adequately catered for.

He listed poor funding, welfare and equipment among the major problems of the Force, which had not been addressed for many years.

However, the chairman said his committee would meet with the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, on Wednesday next week to discuss the challenges facing the Force.

Kumo clarified that the meeting was already scheduled before Jonathan’s visit to Ikeja.

“The meeting has nothing to do with the Ikeja visit.

“That is not the aim. It was scheduled already that the IG and members of the committee would meet to discuss on police matters,” he stated.

Similarly, prominent lawyer, Prof. Itse Sagay, said he was disappointed that the President didn’t seem moved by the level of decay he saw at the police college, but was angry that it was exposed.

He said, “The fact that such an important public institution was allowed to decay to that level shows the kind leadership we have in this country and government’s total lack of consideration for Nigerians. But what was more baffling to me was the President’s reaction. He didn’t express shock at the level of decay but was angry that the failure of his government was exposed.

“He didn’t care that those that are being trained there would come out to be of no use to the country, because they were trained in a decayed and hostile environment. He was only concerned with the image of his government. That to me is a pointer to the character and attitude of those in government and it’s very disturbing.”

This man should go and sit down, all the allocations going to the police, where are they?
He's committee had scheduled to meet next week, was the committee just been inaugurated?
must Mr. President be everywhere and do everything himself, what's the coommittee's job then, they (members) should acknowledge their failure and thank God that they are not appointment political office holders, else they'd be warming up to hit the street in search of another job.

They should do an IQ test for these house of reps members. They are totally disgusting. You mean they are aware of this mess and did nothing for over 2 years now? So what is the work of the committee then? The man is indicting himself terribly. Their work is oversight. SO admiting that he is aware of the decay and havent done anything about it for 2 years is enough reason to recall him from the house. what a shameful statement to make. I guess he is not happy that the president has gone to see it for himself and has made them look very stup1d!

Made who look st.upid? Whose job is it to administer the security logistics of this country?

Frankly, I like the idea of surprise visits. Nonetheless Uncle Jo could hardly claim to be in the dark about what a typical police station/ barracks/ school looks like in this country. He has lived in Nigeria for about 50 years of his life before becoming President, so he should not come and form oyinbo for us. Of course he knew and has always known the state of these facilities. The fact is that the documentary left him feeling embarrased and he had to do something to make it appear that he is urgently concerned. Period.

The Move is hollow, unless drastic reforms follow his visit. Starting with the peeps who rented out the grounds for a party. . .

I'm afraid you are worse than the Reps you are criticizing. They are not from Mars and are not Aliens from space - why don't you run for office or sponsor better candidates.

Even though the law makers may be partially accused of dereliction of duty in their oversight function, the affairs of the police is an exclusive preserve of the executive so the President cannot claim he was unaware of the dilapidated state of police formations and barracks in the country before Channels aired it. Having a first hand assessment of the police college is a charade since the same problems abound in all police formations and barracks. What has the President done with the recommendation of the Presidential Police Reform he constituted? Nothing! The first step would have been to summon the IGP, Minister and Osayande who are directly responsible for their welfare and demand they account for monies appropriated for police welfare!

@thelastPope is never one to miss an opportunity to besmirch the character of others around these parts.
As long as you are not singing praises of the current administration, you are either a "hater" or ACN/CPC supporter - simple.

Reps look into police welfare
Federal lawmakers investigate living conditions and population of the NPF

The House of Representatives, on Thursday, directed its Committee on Police Affairs to investigate the poor quality of kits and general welfare of the officers of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).

The resolution was reached following the motion sponsored by Rasaq Bello-Osagie who expressed concern over the numerical strength of the police; adding that officers and men of NPF are the least in the West Africa sub-region.

This, according to him, poses a great challenge to the effective discharge of their statutory duties in protecting lives and property of the citizenry.

“The general welfare of some officers and men of the Nigeria Police is so appalling that they don't even have good and habitable quarter/barracks, thereby compromising their service delivery to the nation,” he said. “NPF uniforms are sown at various locations which increases the risk of access to these materials by hoodlums for criminal activities.”

The House also urged the federal government to immediately award scholarships to the children of late Sergeant Sunday Badang who died last week while trying to diffuse an Improvised Explosive Device in the Kaduna.

This is interesting now that it is not The Punch (or opposition report)
Hon. Usman Kumo..PDP Gombe

Constructive criticism and viable opposition is what will move us forward as a Nation, not baseless defence of the defenceless.
I congratulate the courage of the TV station, and hope NTA/FRCN will start getting their acts together in investigative journalism and stop reporting...how President slept, how he smiled, how minister drank blah blah blah.
Thanks to the words of Prof. Itse Sagay
