Attack On Emir: Presidency Hits Back At Buhari by blessedmayor(m): 7:57am On Jan 23, 2013 |
The Presidency yesterday hit back at Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) leader Gen. Muhammadu Buhari for criticising government over last weekend’s gun attack on Emir of Kano Alhaji Ado Bayero. Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) President Ayo Oritsejafor also said the Federal Government has failed in its commitment to security of the nation. He spoke through a statement on the attack on Alhaji Bayero. A statement in Abuja by the CAN president’s Special Assistant, Media/Public Affairs, Mr. Kenny Ashaka, said: “The President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, is saddened by Saturday’s gun attack on the octogenarian and Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero. The attack is disturbing and totally condemnable. This attack reinforces CAN’s call to the Federal Government on the need to do more in the area of securing Nigerians and Nigeria. “Although Nigerians are yet to know those behind the barbaric act, I want to, again, appeal to northern political, religious and traditional leaders to say and do more in order to, practically, engage those responsible for the ‘madness’ going on in northern Nigeria and find ways to help end this nightmare. “Too many innocent lives have been lost in unexplainable and avoidable circumstances and this reminds us of victims of bombed churches and those who have been killed by gunmen in their homes and places of worship. “I will like to remind Nigerians of my call to join me in fasting and prayers on the last Friday of every month, beginning from Friday, the 25th of January, 2013. Nigerians should pray for God’s mercy, an end to wickedness and peace over our dear nation. “As the Emir, his two sons and others injured in the attack recuperate, I wish them speedy recovery and pray to the Almighty God that the healing process should be perfected. I also condole with the families of the local council chairman, the emir’s driver and the three body guards who were killed in the attack.” Reacting to Gen. Buhari’s statement on the attack on the Emir, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Public Affairs, Dr. Doyin Okupe, described Gen. Buhari’s comments as unfortunate, reckless and opportunistic. Gen. Buhari had said the Nigerian state was not just under an ominous cloud of insecurity but all the citizens under the nation space are also victims. Describing the comments by Gen. Buhari and the CPC as “irresponsible”, Okupe cautioned against politicising the attack on the traditional ruler, stressing that the attempt by Gen. Buhari, the CPC and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to disparage the Federal Government was uncalled for. Okupe said: “Any attempt to politicise this unfortunate attack on the revered Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero and members of his family is irresponsible. “Though the attack itself is regrettable, it is difficult at present to blame it on the Boko Haram or terrorism, or in fact on some criminal elements within the society that hid under the spate of insecurity in the state to perpetuate this heinous crime.” The President’s aide added that the police and other security agencies were working round the clock to ensure that the perpetrators of the attack are arrested and prosecuted. Okupe cited the recent killing of over 20 school pupils in Connecticut, United States by a gunman to show how difficult it is to prevent crime in any part of the world. “At that moment in the United States, no American citizen or group blamed the killings on the President or the government, in spite of the avalanche of security apparatus and expertise available to the United States Government. “What any responsible government must be able to do is to ensure that the perpetrators of these heinous crimes are apprehended, arrested and prosecuted, according to the laws of the land. “We are not impressed by similar stance by the NLC that is supposed to be non partisan in nature and in all approaches. There is indeed absolutely no need to politicise this unfortunate attack on the revered Emir. “In times like this, like in all emergencies, what the nation ought to do is to pull together in the same direction and encourage the citizenry to give full support to government and all security agencies so as to ensure that the culprits are brought to justice.” |

We have come to a point in this nation where GEJ,Okupe and co see evil when someone speak the truth about current issues in the country. Their wish is simple - everyone should shut up while the rot and insecurity continues. Hypocritically, the lap dog had nothing to say about their buddy Ayo Oritsejafor. 1 Like |

They're right. Nigerians are so obsessed with politics that the value of human life becomes nothing more than an irrelevant argument point. Nobody can stop all crime and all murder in any nation, nor can you assume someone perpetuates it because they're your political enemy. Buhari's speed at blaming GEJ is very uncivilized. If a person can only speak about another person when a problem comes about he's not a leader, wait till you find a person that will speak of solution and ideas before you set your crown on any head. 1 Like |

Ikengawo: They're right. Nigerians are so obsessed with politics that the value of human life becomes nothing more than an irrelevant argument point. What are you saying? When traditional rulers who even have security around them are attacked in broad day light? What is the hope of common man on the street? |
Re: Attack On Emir: Presidency Hits Back At Buhari by Ikengawo: 11:04am On Jan 23, 2013 |
Wadeoye:I agree, it shows that things have got bad in this country but we don't need to make it a political issue. These men are criminals and they're lazy and mentally derranged. We try to blame criminality on unemployment and bad government but that's simplifying the issues. Most of these criminals are simply to lazy and insane to work and they don't want work, they want fast easy money by any means even if they have to kill their fellow man. Many of us have been unemployed, and most of use didn't commit crimes like terrorism, and kidnapping when we were unemployed because we're not bad people. Nigerians are god fearing people but like fools we think our government is some type of God. We believe government decides our destiny like God, we believe government determines when we live and when we die like God, we believe all bad can be ended by government as if GEJ is God. There are many that are willing to kill their fellow man for a small stout in Nigeria and nobody made these people that way because you and I has suffered under the same conditions as them and seen the same power outages and we didn't want to kill anybody. These people are simply sick. Buhari was out of line and insensitive in quickly making this about politics. I even hesitate to make boko haram about jonathan, he didn't create it and if someone wants to take a bomb and blow someone else up, there's no way he can stop them period. Even the US is suffering under regular public killings and they have the best police force and army in the world. 1 Like |

The only people in the north that don't support Buhari are the Elites, and these elites constitute not up to 1% of the population. I can authoritatively tell you that in a free and fair election,Buhari will get at least 80% of northern votes. But dts not the topic of dicussion here |

take dat: What an insecure and intolerant government, always averse to criticism and inept at doing the right thing! True talk. This highlights the total political naivete of the Nigerian people. What we are seeing now is what 'accidental leaders' have done throughout history i.e blame others for their innate lack of ability that will make them fail, 100% of the time, in a position happenstance, and not ability or merit, put them in. History is littered with many examples of very poor accidental leaders who become very paranoid and operated with the sort of myopic siege mentality that was damaging to their Nation. Most Nations have learnt from history to move beyond 'luck', ethnicity and religiosity in their national politic. Not so Nigeria. All the signs were there that this man is a disaster waiting to happen. His open frolicking with the most corrupt in the land, his nonchalant insistence Teslim Folarin be cleared from a murder probe so as to deliver delegate votes for him in Abuja, his disregard for the rule of law that saw him make OGD his SW campaign manager instead of sanctioning the thug for the disgraceful Ogun State legislative impeachment antics, etc, etc. All this pointed to a desperado unconcerned with doing the right thing and only interested in gaining power at any cost. Despite all those glaring signs, many simple-minded folks chose to believe he must have good things for Nigeria since his path was "ordained by the god who cleared all obstacle out of the way" to see him become acting President and then substantive President after Yar Adua's death. Even here on NL, religious loon attack anyone who criticise GEJ because we dare to criticise "god's anointed one". If it is not the religious psychos, it is the bigots shouting that Jonathan is criticised merely because the Yorubas and the Hausa/Fulani hate him. It all makes one want to puke. In the end, Nigerians deserve this man and they deserve his misrule, stupid excuses and the blame-shifting antics his Government is entirely about. |

Re: Attack On Emir: Presidency Hits Back At Buhari by CROWE: 12:06pm On Jan 23, 2013 |
Nigeria needs to heap piles and piles of money into security, triple the size of the police force if not more and protect the people for fVcks sake. There are many unemployed people in Nigeria so we are not lacking in man power, we also need to man the norther border by the thousands and turn that place into a minefield, we need to protect northern Nigerians from poor Jihadists across the border who want to make our country a hell hole like theirs. |

I'm not surprised at Buhari's opportunistic rant.He so often tries to politicise every incident and shamelessly seeks to profit therefrom, however and unfortunately for him,the more he tries, the more uncaring,unempathic,hard-hearted and wicked he reveals himself to be and the more his desperation for power shows |

There is nothing like politicising a stone faced reality, Government should sit-up and stop buck passing its misfortunes to others! |

Attacking genuine traditional rulers means attacking the core fibre of the nation. It officially proclaim Nigeria as a nation without reverence, culture, security and ordinances. A nation where vultures rules, like Somalia and modern afganistan. |
