Ninapha: Are names really fashions too? Names reign and then they go, there was a time Ngozi, Ijeoma, Ade, salimo, Nseobong, Uchenna, Ejiro, seun etc were on d lips of every one, they are rare now!

New names come up now and then, for the igbos names like Kamsiyochukwu,- kamsy, chiziterem-chizzy and d likes are in vogue, which names are common in ur language? And what is d meaning?

Any name without a good meaning is not a name but an insult to its bearer

It's of no use if your supposed Igbo name doesn't sound Igbo. We bear Igbo names to promote our language too.

My dear, I wouldn't want anyone biting his or her tongue trying to pronounce my name, or spend 15 min trying to teach them how to pronounce it. That's why I have 2 names, if I think it's gonna take you time to pronounce my name, I give you the English name. That's me anyway!

There are a few names I absolutely love but which would be askew for a 21st century child:
Ebinuko - 'the one who feeds fat during famine'
Ngwumsinachiabia - 'my honour comes from my God'
Uko - 'commendable pride'
Ositadinma - 'if things become better henceforth...'
Nkoli - I don't know what the name means but the girl gave my sister a tough time in school

However the names I find trendy are:

Chidumebi -- Chidum, Dumebi
Somadina
Lotenna
Zimuzo (I actually invented this name for a drama I wrote back in secondary school, so imagine my shock when I asked an 18 year old boy his name and he said -- Zimuzo. So much for my invention!)

Vikin:

It's just a short form that would be easier to pronounce for non Igbo speaker. I wouldn't like anyone killing my traditional name by the way they pronounce it! smiley
