The Federal Government on Tuesday dispelled fears that the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos State might soon collapse.

The Minister of Works, Mr. Mike Onolememen, refuted the rumour of the imminent collapse of the bridge and described it as mere speculations.

According to him, the government is committed to taking proactive steps to ensure that the bridge is kept in an acceptable safe condition.

The Senate had on Thursday considered a motion on the state of the bridge after it permitted Senator Gbenga Ashafa, representing Lagos East Senatorial District, to bring a motion on the matter.

The senator had said the consultant, who carried out an assessment of the repair works on the bridge, discovered that the work at its foundation was not properly executed.

Ashafa said the consultant discovered that “the bridge could collapse today, tomorrow, next year, five or 10 years and, therefore; there is the urgent need to discuss the imminent collapse.”

However, Onolememen, in a statement on Tuesday, said the speculations were based on mere perception as there was no civil engineering test to justify the claims, stressing that the ministry was ensuring routine maintenance.

He said the eight expansion joints of the bridge, which were defective, were repaired last year.
