Ladipo: 32 Bakassi Boys Jailed by peckhamboi: 6:41pm On Mar 04, 2013
Ten suspected Bakassi Boys and 32 traders arrested at Ladipo Market in Lagos, Southwest Nigeria , last week have been sent to jail by the Special Offences Court sitting in Alausa, Ikeja.
The 10 suspects were arrested last Monday when the auto-spare parts market was shut by the Lagos State government, while the other 32 traders were arrested last Wendesday as they were trying to open their shops to remove some of their wares.
At least, 22 other traders were arrested last Thursday and Friday on the same offence by taskforce officials.
The 10 suspected Bakassi boys were charged on a three-count charge.
They were charged for obstructing inspector Yusuf and Supol Taiwo, an offence punishable under the state environmental sanitation law.
They were also charged for conducting themselves in a riotous manner likely to cause or breach peace in the market through the use of charms and machetes in the market.
The 10 suspects, at the court’s sitting, pleaded not guilty and were granted bail with N50, 000 each with two sureties each. The sureties must not be civil servant in the state and must have landed properties in Lagos with an evidence of tax payment for 12 years.
The suspects were transferred to the Badagry Prison pending when they would be able to perfect their bail conditions.
Also, the other 32 suspects arrested pleaded guilty and were sentenced to 60 days imprisonment without option of fine.
Meanwhile, Governor Babatunde Fashola has given conditions for the re-opening of the market, saying that once the traders spearhead a clean-up exercise and formally undertake that never again would trading take place on the road or the edges of the canal, the market would be re-opened.
Fashola, who visited the market on Sunday, lamented the wanton environmental degradation.
Fashola had visited the market following pleas by the traders and the leadership of the Igbo Council in Lagos State led by Professor Anya O. Anya, who visited the State House, Ikeja last Monday to present its new council members to the governor.
The governor described the state of the market and its environs as “massive degradation of a section of Lagos,” saying that the good thing in the visit was that the traders had shown they were ready to make amends.
“It is a massive degradation of a section of Lagos and this is not acceptable. People should not carry on like this. But what is, perhaps, worthy of note is that those who are involved have seen the error of what they have done here and are ready to work with us to clean-up and I have said here that they must take the lead.
The canal there poses a lot of danger and we are expecting heavy rains. I don’t want to come back here to pick any dead body. We built the canal and we must make it work by not trading on it and not dumping refuse in it. People told me that they picked engine parts, spare-parts and other things from the canal. It must stop,” the governor said, adding that there is now an agreement between the traders and the government to work together to clean up the place and continue with the business there.
Directing that the traders must work with the Mushin Local Government authorities to effect the clean-up and sanitation of the market, he declared, “The only reason we are in government is to make you prosper but you must help us do that. You are going to work with the Ministry of Environment. You are going to clean up the place yourselves.
“You will clean first and when you have done it, I will come back and I will bring members of your leadership who came to me and we will say this is the agreement now. We will sign a new agreement, nobody trades on the road, it must be behind the property line. Nobody trades on the pavement, it is for pedestrians.”
President General of the Ladipo Central Executive of the Auto Dealers’ Association, Comrade Ikechukwu Animalu, agreed that the environmental situation at the market was bad and apologized on behalf of the traders, pledging that he would lead them to clean it up as well as ensure that there would be no more trading either on the road or on the canal.

the topic doesn't correspond with the news.
32 traders were jailed for 60days in the news and not the 10 suspected bakassi boys. Though the 10 bakassi boys were placed on bail.
But Fashola no try at all, how he go commot ladipo market for its normal place con put am for prison?
Shey Fashola no kno say the 32 traders go form another Ladipo market for prison ni?

My thoughts, Igbos should start shopping for a new Business Capital from where they can pilot their Businesses all over Africa and west Africa un molested, The choice of Lagos after weighing the recent events of very high annual discriminatory registration fees and the recent closure of markets on very flimsy excuses , Lagos has outlived its usefulness to igbos .

The same way the Northern states cloned a monster that was busy terrorizing Igbos through riots and Bombings in their churches and Business posts and has now turned to terrorizing Northern Indigenous people is the same way the Lagos Government will turn on Lagos Indigenous people once there are no igbos to victimize in their vicinity

Whatreally is Lagos state doing with the Taxes people pay aside the closure of markets, demolition of homes of poor people , the planting of trees/flower , the organisation of opposition against the Government of Jonathan , the payment of $500,000 for a 45 minutes appearance of a porn actress Kim Kardashian and the sponsorship of the Birthday of their new messiah to the tune of N2B

you are not paying enough in tax. there will be new levies and tax brackets introduced at the local govt level. we are waiting to see what Gej and Natnl Assmbly are going to do with their aggressive bill to make local government autonomous. we are going to compete with north to attract all igbo traders to local govts in lagos. the future is full of opportunities, a win-win solution. grin

The Localization of 3 Deep sea ports in Lagos and Non in any other part of the Country was what drew igbos in droves to Lagos , prior to the uncivil war in the 60s very few igbos came to Lagos to do Business as the Port in Port Harcourt was able to accommodate the size of ships that igbos used for their Businesses.

The Springing up of Deep Sea ports in Bayelsa who are even planning a rail link to Onitsha, a Deep sea Port in Akwa Ibom who are also planning a 10 lane Dual Carriage highway to Aba, The Internationalization of the Airports in Uyo, Asaba, Enugu and Port Harcourt will be a game changer.

At a time Northerners were so much incensed in their Arrogance that they boasted that igbos can not do without them , if they Knew otherwise perhaps Boko Haram would not have attacked innocent igbo Business men , today igbo Businesses have Relocated out of most Core Northern states and the Governors are now crying that their Economy is gone.
The Economic Impact of igbos in Lagos will soon be felt when the Deep Sea Ports in Ibaka and Bayelsa has been finished .
Mark it Lagos would turn into Another Ibadan very very soon, with very low standard or living , old and Dilapidated houses and very low cash flow. with the Growth of Slums and ghettos out stripping the Growth of Estates and Business Districts.

@ the bolded, this is what these Yorubas don't get,,,if not for the war, Igbos will not be flocking to Lagos in order to access the sea port, as there would have been a functioning port in the east. After the war, there was/still a calculated process put in place by the owners of nigeria to starve the east of the necessary infrastructures.

@ post, this is where I must say Ndigbo must pressure GEJ's government to open up another seaport in the east and internationalize the Enugu airport. Ndigbo must also have to rethink their penchant for investing profusely outside the east,,,,a word is enough for the wise

Before the war Ibos didnt come to Lagos, After the war they started coming because of the Port.

Was it the war that dried up the ports in Iboland pre 1966?

the only business igbo did pre-war was trasportation. this is where ojukwu father made his money and he was in lagos. back then igbos were the porters off loading cement and other imported goods between dock warehouses and the lorries right there in apapa port and on quay side in marina. they were also porters at balogun, ereko, idumota, ebute ero.....pushing dollies fullyloaded with onions, kola, and other goods between the markets on island and iddo railway terminus where they are loaded on trains heading north or those just arriving. your business connections with ports in lagos and uptil about 1980 had nothing to do with depth of the harbour. you were the alarus pushing omolankes with loaded goods. ijebus, egbas, ijeshas, igbominas, hausas were the traders and shop owners. you have the lebanese and indians and arabs that traded primarily in textiles and jewelries.

hausas held the iddo markets.
ijebus held the oke arin, ereko and parts of ebute ero and oju olobun
egbas held ebute ero, idumota and balogun
ijesha and igbomina controlled jankara and oja oba
lebanese were on martins street and oluwole and idumota
indians were trading on southside of dosunmu, pedro and into agarawu
arabs and turks were in oluwole to taiwo olowo to abibu oki.

tell me which market on island igbo had business in prior to you getting into spare parts in late 70s and early 80s.

on the mainland of lagos.....ilaje, ijebu, egba, bini/urhobo, ijesha, these were the people that ran business there.

never ever try to rewrite the story of lagos where im present, you will fail.

in addition to all these merchants, then we had trade depots for GBO at oja oba on adeniji adele, there was PZ at both balogun and iddo, there was SCOA at marina.

let me stop! grin cheesy.

the war has ended, another one has not started. a man of eastern origin is the president. the finance ministey and economy of the nation is in your daughters hand, the minister of aviation is your daughter, the minister of oil is your daughter, the speaker of house is your son.....what are you waiting for?

why with your sons and daughters holding the reins of power at national level you are still depending on a yoruba at state level to make a living?

when yoruba get to national stage we are going to expand and develop everywhere but we definitely are never going to leave yorubaland deprived of what it needs.

if they truly are thinking, shouldn't the centennary memorial city be built in east, since that was the first seat of nigeria? why do your brothers and sisters think abuja is the best place for such national edifice?

pack your shyyt and leave lagos so we can have space for people that understand the value of land and human relationship to move in. yeye angry

That is why I say Biafra is still the best thing that will happen to Nigerians in General, but we prefer to bury our heads in the sand. So if there is Biafra, any Biafran found in nigeria is at his or her own risk. I don't care what Nigerians would say, ie Biafra would be bad because of Igbos and this and that. Me I don't care, for those who are saying go to UR villages, if We take Biafra, in just a little while We will make it the best at least in Africa. Why wouldn't Igbos be in lagos when the FG has refuse to build infrastructures that helps business and trading in the South East and concentrate it on Lagos. It is not magic, where the infrastructure are the business men will go, FYI Igbo land has a LOT of investments from Igbos., it is just that the FG has refused to do its job in the South East.

Tell them ooooo....Was it the war that dried the deep sea and destroyed the seaport? Are there also seaports at Ibadan, Osun, Ekiti, Ogun and other Yoruba speaking cities? The truth is Yorubaland is blessed and that is why your people keep relocating from erosion southeast to Yorubaland in order to do business and make ends meet......We are not mates.....we pass unna in all aspects...get that into your brain, respect your landlord and be a good boy okay? hahahahahahahahahahahahaha

you do have a point. Now is the time to make it happen, biafra or development in east, whichever can happen first. Look at the following list and tell me why your region is not developed. Do you think this level of neglect in east will happen, respectively to north and west, if Hausa or Yoruba occupy, in order, these top tier government posts?

Presidency - East
Finance - East
Aviation - East
Petroleum - East
Health - East
Labour - East
Power - East
Science & Tech - East

Everything you need in East to develop that land is housed in one or combination of these cabinets and these are your sons and daughters. So who truly is your enemy, who is holding back your development in East? The fact of the matter is you cannot progress independently and you need a progressive land and people to latch on to and on whose back you can make a rise and prosperity. You owe those people an immense gratitude because without them you would not have made it. If you were left in East or made to go run business there you cannot make it. Therefore be thankful to God and show gratitude to those who continue to facilitate your prosperity on their land. They have developed their land, whether with federal money or not. Your turn is here to do same and everything you need is in place, so if you fail to and you loose these positions, then dont blame Nigeria, blame your fellow Easterners who wasted the opportunity and failed to do anything when they had the reins of power and trillions of the treasury to make it happen for you.

I think what we see happening in Lagos is a subtle enactment of a hidden agenda by the bigoted and tribal wing of the Yoruba elite (mainly students of awos' 'ethnic politics'), who see Igbos as the main competition in Lagos and want them out of Lagos.....or want to diminish their numbers in Lagos (for political and economic reasons)......or want to 'try' and cripple them economically for petty reasons of hate and a feeling of ethnic superiority.

I believe these 'students of awo' do not make up the majority of Yoruba, but they are in control of their affairs; and in public they are represented by the likes of Fashola and Tinubu, while on the net (where they show their true colours) they are represented by the vociferous, baying and hateful mob you see on threads like this.
