@barefootbandit, when Seun wrote rule 11, it was intended for people who type with giant 32pt or so font or in ALL CAPS, making their posts long and a strain on the eyes. I use Garamond 13pt and Sexkillz uses an 11pt font. Are those considered giant? We've been using them for a long time. This is the first time I'm hearing anyone call 11pt and 13pt fonts giant. If I felt my font violated rule 11, then what makes you think I would keep using it? In all my time using this font, this is the first time I'm seeing someone complain about it being too big.

Babyosisi & her hatred for anything islam. Can't imagine how so much hate for anything can exist in one person...even though you have multiple handles, its still d same fingers that type & post with them. Goodluck sha smiley

@Topic, the ATTITUDE of the nl mods can make or mar the popularity & membership of this forum. I hope Seun is aware of this. Nairaland is a business & each and every member is a customer. As a business owner/ manager appointed by the owner, there are ways you attend to good and bad customers. This is not a classroom. Even a teenager deserves some form of respect.

Arrogant and disrespectful moderators will make nairaland more unpopular by far than insults and tribalism. I do not think mods need to always shove their ban powers into the faces of members (both erring and law abiding) all the time like a teacher who keeps swinging his cane over the whole class. It will only incite further rebellion which will in turn make the mods work harder and ban more, and will eventually make the rest (even d law abiding ones) get disillusioned with the forum. That you ban 1000 people a day doesn't make u an effective mod. A more effective mod will rather try to ensure that not up to 1000 people commit a banable offence in the first place and you dont get that by threatening bans all the time or even going to the extent of saying to a banned member that if it were you, you would have even banned that person for much longer than that! I read that from a mod & i was like, what sort of arrogant and power intoxicated fellow is this?

I think the first thing a good mod should be concerned with is trying to form a good rapport & camaraderie with the members of that board, across seeming divides. Don't go all out to flex ur muscle & show who's boss. Be flexible to a certain extent but be rigid when need be. You can't please everyone & ideally u shouldnt try to, but as a MODERATOR, oh, you really have to try to communicate very well especially with opposing sides of e-warring parties. There's a reason your title is MODERATOR and not 'Board Head or Board Commander' (tho i kno some mods would relish that nomenclature change...that's if they havnt even suggested it to Seun before sef).

We all know moderating is not easy, but like i've said, some mods make their jobs more difficult. If you know you are not a diplomatic person by nature, you dont have time, you cannot address people without displaying arrogance continually, or you know you tend to misbehave once u have a little power in ur hands, then i don't think you have any business being a mod here. Even if you are offered the post, kindly decline. However it appears some people go all out to lobby for the mod jobs just so they can dish out their ban powers at will in the name of ''cleaning up the section'' forgetting that most people here are adults and not kids.

The same way some people feel important being the first to comment on a thread these days (did i hear someone say the kids have invaded Nl as the FTC thing never used to be popular before) is apparently the same way some people get high & have some increased self worth when appointed mods. If you know you are like that by nature, no problem, just don't ruin a good forum. That's all. There have been mods before you and there'll be more after you.

Kudos to all the very good mods in the forum, both past & present; & to the ones with issues, abeg shape up or kindly tell Seun to look for your replacement.

Are you in seun's mind to tell us what he intended? If it was meant for people who type with a certain font then why didn't he indicate it? Why did he generalize with the term ''distracting post''? What do you even think that term means? Besides, before now people have complained about your fonts, someone even created a thread highlighting it right here on the general section. And even on this thread you can see people who do not approve of it. But anyway, there's a first time for everything. Now you know people disapprove of your font, now you know it's against the rules, now you can do something about it!

You can only Imagine the level of arrogancy..they create the rules for others and make exceptions for their own violations. What makes it difficult for a MOD to use the normal fonts when a rule prohibits large ones without specifications...and Oguagua88 comes up here educating us and celebrating on how nearly she broke the rules..armed robbers and smugglers are still thieves..Oguagua! use the normal fonts because you are a MOD and stop cooking up excuses abusing our intelligency. People here are not kids.

Sorry but from what you said (intelligency and arrogancy) OGUGUA88 has permission to abuse your "intelligency", seeing that those two words are in fact, NOT WORDS.

I hereby declare that 13 point fonts are the maximum acceptable size. I think this settles the matter. In the future we may remove the size option.

Do you really have to subject yourself to the whims of your mods? That's pathetic! Why can't eveybody make use of the normal font? What stops ogugua and sexkillz from following the rules? What exactly will it take from them? Anyway please officially include that exception in the body of rules so everybody could decide to type in 13 point fonts until sexkillz and ogugua futher reinvent their style of infamy.

The moderators are customers as much as you are. It would make sense to argue that they are better customers because they also volunteer their time to the community, but I won't go there because I believe that all Nairaland members are equal. I hereby urge NL moderators to try to be less abrasive as they do their work.

Please there is nothing wrong in correcting your mods when they err, we all know nobody is perfect and mistakes are part of life. They volunteer their time and resources to moderate doesnt make them untouchable or above mistakes.

Fact is the moderators are leaders of the various sections thus must act like leaders, not like power-drunk dictators. Being a good leader involves very good social and communication skills; the mods should learn to communicate really well with posters, not just threaten to ban like our lives depend on NL. You'll be amazed at how people will follow the rules once the mods exhibit good leadership skills.

There are three things that would solve everyone's problems.

A "show profanity" button.

For guests, and by default for new members, profanity is hidden on the website. If you chose to opt in to the "Show Profanity" option, and after you state that you are over 18, you are allowed to see posts in their ORIGINAL format, without the "stupid", "porn", etc edits. One of the many websites that does this well is Cracked.com.

A "dislike" button

Just like most websites, the "dislike" button will allow users to collectively hide posts that the community doesn't agree with WHILE STILL GIVING THE MEMBERS THE OPPORTUNITY TO SEE THE HIDDEN POST. Members will simply click "Show Hidden Post" to see what was there, and then they can click "Like" if they don't agree with the consensus, they can click "dislike" to further downvote the post, or they can just read the post and leave. This one button will eliminate 90% of the problems with mods, and eliminate 90% of their workload.

Allow users to gain a "reputation"

Utilize a point system that allows users to reward helpful, informative, funny, etc posters with "reputation points", "badges", etc. This will encourage posters to maintain ONE user ID, it will encourage users to MAINTAIN THE GOOD REPUTATION of their user ID, and it will make it incredibly easy to identify who should be (and who shouldn't be) a mod. People like Lawyer in the property section will have huge reputations, and it will encourage them to keep posting. It will also allow newer members to realize that his posts carry more value than the various omoniles with disposable accounts who also post in that section. One of the best websites for this is Huffingtonpost.com. That woman is almost a billionaire, so I would do what she does and not be so arrogant.

I fully expect you to ignore my three suggestions, because it seems like people have been asking for these things for years. However, the solutions are just too obvious to not mention them at all.

PS - I think Maclatunji should be banned. Mostly because he doesn't care about the rules in the Islam for Muslims section, he just moderates according to his emotions. To make matters worse, he puts thread, after thread, on the frontpage and then furiously bans and hides anyone who isn't a Muslim.

Pipsland78: ^^^ Allow me to add an opt-out or de-register button. This allows de-satisfied members to opt out of the forum.

YES!

That is one of the most bizarre things about this website. The moderators tell you not to operate multiple accounts, unless they will ban you, yet they offer no way to voluntarily close an account. It doesn't make any sense, and it reeks of insecurity. They must think that putting an opt out button would lead to everyone on the site de-registering. If they are THAT insecure about their membership, they should at least start listening to their members.

The thing that most internet entrepreneurs forget...is that the barrier to entry for their competition is ZERO. Anyone can start up a forum tomorrow, and crush Nairaland into the dust. Tumblr can be crushed by Instagram, Pinterest, etc. Yahoo, Altavista, Lycos, AskJeeves, etc were crushed by Google. Myspace was crushed by Facebook. I could go on forever. The only reason those internet companies got crushed was because they took their large user base for granted and by ignoring those very same users, created a demand for a better company. If Yahoo had listened to it's users and gotten rid of the paid search results that were ruining the experience Yahoo would be were Google is today. If Myspace had listened to it's users and stopped making it difficult for users to be themselves (while giving too much power to advertisers and musicians), Myspace would be where Facebook is today.

Internet companies simply DO NOT have the luxury of ignoring their users. It is simply too easy for a competitor to wipe the floor with them.

There is absolutely no excuse for ignoring your users when they demand the same thing for YEARS!!! You are CREATING the opening for a competitor by ignoring them.

The more I think about this, the more I see the similarities with every other internet company in history.

1. One company starts the trend (or a group of them).
2. Those companies get complacent and develop into poorly run organizations.
3. An upstart competitor PERFECTS the service delivery model and wipes the floor with the pioneers.
4. The pioneers are permanetly relegated to the background, or they are just forgotten altogether, while the new upstart makes all the money.
5. The creators of the pioneer companies spend their time at bars reminiscing about the 'good ole days' when they were the only game in town. "Hey girl, I created Geocities!" "It was the precursor to Wordpress!"

Unless Seun wants to spend the rest of his life telling people how he created "Nairaland, the precursor to ________", he should get his act together and start whipping the moderators into shape. The world isn't going to wait for him to figure this all out. Take it from someone who has literally used the internet from the BEGINNING. You are treading well worn territory.

If you are not innovating, you are losing.
