It's not the moderator or the op's fault. It's the fault of the three writers from Reuters who refused to do their homework since anything goes in Nigeria and Africa.
it's not a big deal anyway, nigerians themselves make such mistakes, like calling everybody from the north Hausa or malla, even Yorubas still call ekiti indigenes ondo, some call calabar people Ibo instead of efik. So no biggie if Reuters does so, focus on the issue at hand.

Sorry, but it is a big deal. If not then what's the difference between a literate and an illiterate?

Don't be surprised the diffrence between the wooden boat and a safe, well built boat might just be N50. LESSON? The diffrence between living and dying is just a very thin blue line. one wrong decision and you lose everything.

d boat/plane issue could have been solved by having proper and rigorous security standards in place. Somehow I doubt that the government has them and even if they did, i'm sure that with bribes the companies could bypass such standards and the government would look d other day. Shame

Excellent observation. This is what you expect our generation to discuss and expose rather they are involved in ethnic bashing. Most of south-south areas are not accessible except by water transportation. How does our government improve these water ways transportation instead of paying for celebrities wedding? how do they provide safer are reliable boats as a means of transportation instead of flying chopper themselves when travelling to such locations?
Tomorrow same south-south citizens will cry marginalisation when they cannot even hold their son accountable to develop their area now that he holds power. they are not interested in how the government develops their area as long as "he is our son" in power.

As far as proactive measures go, yours is one of the most informed contributions on this thread.

Chances are that pirates operating off the Somali coastline are better resourced for disaster recovery than those responsible for the policing of our territorial waters.

When we are always cutting corners. Is the wooden boat the only means of travelling? Is there no airport in Gabon? To think that those guys that went to their early graves will be carrying huge sums of money, we are told they are traders, and from experience my brothers trade with huge sums. Very recently, i was trying to buy some fittings from Aba and i requested to send the requested amount to the bank account of the seller, the ediet refused and insisted i must come down to Aba and pay him cash. I did not even want to take delivery until he had received proof of payment, but the guy was so adamant that i could not fathom his idiocy. I had to eventually arrange for him to be paid cash.

For the bereaved, may God grant them the fortitude to bear the loss.
I put it before you that you are ignorance of what's happening in business field. Many business men/women has falling victim of fake transfer alert. The man might not be acting on ignorance but as part of his security major. No need going into details since its not topic on discussion.

Nigeria: Rescue effort for capsized Gabon-bound boat

A boat carrying 160 people has capsized off Nigeria's coast, workers in charge of the rescue effort have said.

So far only two people are known to have survived.

The wooden vessel set off from south-eastern Nigeria on Friday heading to Gabon - a popular route for traders moving between West and Central Africa.

The BBC's Tomi Oladipo in Lagos says these trips last for several days in poor safety standards, and boat accidents are common.

The boat left the remote town of Oron in Cross River state undecided and was heading across the Gulf of Guinea when it capsized 40 nautical miles (74km) offshore, officials say.

Rescuers working off the coast of Cross River state's main city of Calabar say they have recovered dozens of bodies of passengers who drowned.

The two known survivors, a young boy and a woman, clung to a gas cylinder before they were found by fishermen, Cross River state emergency official, David Akate, told Reuters news agency.

I think Our leaders need to undergo intensive safety training and those contesting must be certified before enrollment. By so doing they'll be able to see and regulate some of these avoidable loopholes claiming lives in Nigeri every day. How could we still be using a wooden boat for such distance in this 21st Century??... A country so rich and blessed with great mineral resources?? God has to punish all who are part of the mismanagement of our resources.
Every one does as it pleases them as long as business is concerned. No regard for life all because there are no regulations to ensure safety even where you have them, corruption overshadows it.

Although no more than a moot point given the scale of this tragedy, new information reveals most of the victims involved were indeed foreigners.

Boat mishap: Survivors, NEMA speak on victims’ identities

The two survivors of the ill-fated wooden boat which capsized 40 nautical miles off the coast of Calabar on Friday have disclosed that the victims who perished were mostly foreigners.

13-year-old Hafsat Zakare is a Nigerian, but lives with her parents in Gabon, while Kive Sani, 27, is a Togolese.

Both of them are recuperating in Bakor Medical Centre, Calabar. They told Blueprint in Calabar that the incident occurred as a result of a complete breakdown of the outboard engine used, and that the boat carried 133 passengers and five crew men and not 168 as previously reported by the media.

They said the passengers who were mostly females, few children and a pregnant woman were Gabonese, Nigeriens, Togolese, and Ghanaian nationals, with few Nigerians.

According to Sani, he was promised greener pastures in Gabon by his master at Oron, where he had been resident for over one month.

Sani said he had already paid a certain amount of money to his master to get him a good job in Gabon and was expected to balance up after getting the job, with interest which they mutually agreed on.

He said most of the women aboard the boat did not pay the fare due to an arrangement they had with their respective masters, and feared that the women and the many kids in the boat might have been trafficked.

Addressing journalists yesterday evening, the Director-General of Cross River State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Mr Vincent Aquah, said the incident took place at Ado, off Addax petroleum field, He also said the total number of passengers were altogether 138, with the crew members.

He gave the name of the boat as M.V. Sunny, stressing that the sketchy information put together by his agency indicated that the boat was not carrying many Nigerian citizens.

“Some of the items found on the bodies of the victims were wrappers, slippers, ampicilin capsules and MTN SIM card. The ampicilin and the SIM card with serial no. 455971831192 have nothing to do with Nigeria,” he said.

The death of 166 should constitute a national tredgedy but not much is being heard in Nigeria. Not even mourning the dead. This goes to show the value we place on human life in Nigeria. Too sad.
