STATEMENT COMES A DAY AFTER COURT RULED DEREGULATION ILLEGAL

Nigeria’s economy will collapse if the full deregulation of the downstream sector of the petroleum industry is not carried out, the federal government said on Wednesday. There would be no jobs, no orderly market, no refineries, government will be broke—you know, everything will collapse. The Punch reports that information minister Labaran Maku, who briefed state house correspondents after the federal executive council meeting, stated this, adding that the present situation has “truncated” the potential of the oil and gas sector.

Mr Maku’s statement came a day after a federal high court sitting in Abuja declared deregulation illegal. Maku added that the government was paying money it should spend on development to marketers and urged Nigerians to remember that no government-run business had ever worked in the country. But he also said he knew people were cynical about government policies because past governments had failed them.

Why can't they start the deregulation from the politicians' allowances and salaries?

After the partial removal of the subsidy on fuel early last year, what impart (partial) has he got on the economy and employment they just mentioned!

Have they regulated the way they spend money (on banquet halls, N1b food, inflated contracts, non-existent contracts, thousands of assistants and special advisers, hefty law makers' salaries and emoluments, duplication/multiplicity of agencies and parastatals, private jets, and others too numerous to mention).

How many of their CAMPAIGN promises have they fulfilled? How many? As soon as they make a promise, they forget about it. But do we forget?

It's easy to continue to flog and milk the poor but what sacrifice are these leaders making? They should mention their SPECIFIC SACRIFICES!

They say there will be no jobs when the unemployment rate is already over 70%. Who are they threatening?

Nigeria has prisoners in virtually all the countries of the world. Education is in shambles and potable water does not flow all over any Nigerian city. Health care delivery has collapsed. Nigerians travel to Ghana for education and India for medicare.

The existing infrastructure (e.g 3rd Mainland bridge, Lagos/Ibadan Expressway, Apapa Osodi Expressway, Niger Bridge etc) that were built by previous governments are creaking under over-use. Many Nigerian embassies abroad are usually old and decrepit.

Nigerians are divided and don't trust one another. Many people have lost hope and are despaired. The number of beggars and street hawkers/traders is increasing. 'Yahoo-Yahoo' boys nko? Insecurity nko?

The present government is promoting corruption by unduly and shamelessly pardoning convicted looters and is telling us at the same time that the economy will collapse. Wetin remain?

The only thing that has not collapsed is their pockets.

Dear mr. President, please Deregulate the waste called security vote to governors, Deregulate the cost of running government, Deregulate the so called constituency allowance to senators and house of Theft, sorry reps. Deregulate their salaries, Deregulate the number of militants, sorry ministers, and special dis advisers, Deregulate contracts inflation, Deregulate your jumbo travelling with too many aids. In short you and the governors should deregulate your administrations and see the economic boom rather than economic collapse, and Nigerians will buy fuel for 20 naira per litre.

The only impact I noticed about the partial deregulation of fuel was inflation without any improvement on the economy.
He said they would increase electricity tariff also so that we can enjoy electricity more, they increased •̸Ϟ•̸y bill from N2000 to N6000-N7000 monthly and I only have light for some hours a day. I haven't had electricity for the past 3 days. The light is even better under obasanjo regime, I only hear the mega watts on paper.
Now this guy wants to remove full subsidy when they couldn't account for what they did with the ones they saved from the partial subsidy removal.
Slashing the allowance of the legislators and wasteful spending of the executive building unnecessary banquet hall, vice president's quarters0 and so on would more than cover the whole subsidy but they don't want to sacrifice a bit of their comfort and they still want the poor masses to make the sacrifices.
Yet many people would still vote this man in based on sentiment.
It won't be well for any bas.tard sycophant that quotes ♍ƺ on this!

If we produced all our petrol in the country, there will be ZERO need for the subsidy in the first place. The govt should not put the cart in front of the horse and ignore the elephant in the room.

This Government has no plan nor direction. Like Pukkha has accurately captured above they have, deliberately, failed to see the waste around them but have choosen to make examples of common people. All over the world good Leaders lead by examples but GEJ led Government behave like a Royalty where the Palace needs are sacrosanct to the detriment of the poor populace.
