Wole Soyinka the show guy whose pre occupation is to impress and not to inform has always been jealous of the master story teller - Achebe. This last callous and almost criminal outburst was one of Soyinka's efforts to confine Achebe to being an Igbo champion only. Achebe was and is an African and Nigerian champion. As was pointed out Achebe rejected Nigerian Honours twice not because of "Igbo marginalization" , but because his country Nigeria was been assaulted and raiped by evil men supported and encouraged by the likes of Edwin Clark. Clark will always be a willing ally in whatever calls for the destruction of Nigeria , hence his glee in linking the death of a terminally ill octogenarian in Massachusetts to a terrorist action in Kano.

Artists have many roles; to educate, to entertain, to inform, etc. Probably the most difficult and controversial role of an artist (musician, writer, singer, rapper, dramatist, etc) is to be the mirror of society. To draw attention to things that are happening in society.

Tupac drew attention to the problems of the blackman in the ghettos of the US in the early 1990s/late 80s. Problems such as drugs, black on black violence, imprisonment, rape, etc. Some people said that he was promoting violence and misogyny and that he was a racist, but he was merely reflecting what's happening in society (and calling on the people/government to do something about it).

Eminem did "Stan" and people said that he was promoting violence, but he was merely reflecting the problems celebrities have with fans who hero worship them.


Chief Segun Olusola called NTA staff for to a meeting (in the 1970s). He talked about the growing insecurity in Lagos (armed robberies, etc) and asked them what they think they should do about it. A member of staff suggested that some of the soldiers at the gate should be detailed to follow the staff bus when it's taking staff home at night. Segun Olusola got angry. Can't you use your art to combat the insecurity?

If there are bombings going on in Nigeria (there's been bomb blast for years now) and innocent people are dying and there seems to be no end in sight, then J.P Clark and Soyinka will use any platform they can to draw attention to it, in order to stop people from dying. That's the weapon of the artist.
