Lagos May Shut Abattoir Market by EkoAtlantic1(f): 10:56pm On Mar 25, 2013
The Lagos State Government has warned that it may be forced to shut down the popular Abattoir Market at Oko-Oba in Agege area of Lagos, southwest Nigeria if the stench in the area is not abated.

Officials of the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency, LASEPA, visited the meat market and decried the offensive odour emanating from the market, coupled with dirtiness of the market.

LASEPA General Manager, Engr. Rasheed Shabi, led a team of government officials to inspect the hygienic condition of the market. They inspected the slaughter slab, drainage channels, refuse dump and cow ground.

Shabi said the agency had received several complaints from residents about the offensive odour emanating from the market and was displeased with the waste management system and the poor refuse evacuation process at the abattoir.
According to him, the waste materials generated in the market were not being taken away on time. Thus, the refuse decompose and pollute the environment.

He advised the abattoir stakeholders to liaise with the Lagos State Waste Management Authority, LAWMA, to have a designated waste evacuator to evacuate their refuse rather than leaving them to decompose and pollute the environment.

Shabi warned butchers to desist from smoking their meat with used tyres as such action is detrimental to the health of the citizens.

“Government will not hesitate to shut down this abattoir if this stench should continue unabated,” said Shabi.

Issues that can affect the health of Lagosians and the well-being of the environment are serious issues. If shutting down the market is‎ what's needed to instill a sense of hygiene in these traders, then so be it!!

God bless Lagos State!!

I hope my Heebo brothers won't use this event as another excuse to do what they know how to do best.....

They shouldn't because years have passed when markets dominated by Lagos indegenes and other Yorubas too were shut.

Tribalizing every move our leaders make for our betterment is more or less a distraction to them. You can't compare Ladipo of then before it was closed to this present one, it is for the betterment of the Marketers and their customers.

Another homo africanus simplex thinking omn display here.
Why should the LASEPA oga on the top be the one inspecting the abattoir ONCE IN A WHILE with plenty camera crews and journalists. Na real Eko for show we dey so.
Is he not supposed to have his agents there DAILY enforcing relevant laws on conduct within the abattoir to ensure CONSISTENT cleanliness
And the next thing is we will close the place if YOU don't organise yourselves to keep it clean!
What are the government agencies doing?
BTW, Fashola who is a SAN and should know the roles of each tier of government should call his state agents to order. The Fourth schedule of the 1999 constitution clearly gives LGAs the abattoirs to manage:

(e) establishment, maintenance and regulation of slaughter houses, slaughter slabs, markets, motor parks and public conveniences;

No wonder people dey blame GEJ sey dem nor get ambulance for their Primary Healthcare Centres (PHC)s.
Does anyone know what his LGA chairman and councillors are doing with their Abuja allocations plus taxes, fees, tenement rates, and other IGR things
What do they do during their 8 hours of work daily?
Why should they get a free pass when we don't earn our daily bread free also?
Abeg na wetin!

Why do you have to be thinking with your nose. It was said in the post that the stench emanating from the abattoir is too much and causing environmental hazards to people who lives around. The warning is that it will be shut if the management refuse to do something about it
Just wonder how this affects ibo in lagos, are yoruba and hausa with other tribes not there?
I think its high time MOD starts to delete any post with ethnic colouration in nairaland
