Efcc Officials Swoop On Yahoo Boys In Akure by bluehorizo(m): 2:09am On Apr 03, 2008
Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Tuesday invaded some cyber cafes in Akure, the Ondo State capital, and apprehended some persons suspected to be involved in Internet scam.
It was gathered that no fewer than 15 suspected yahoo boys, including two undergraduates of a higher institution in the state, were nabbed during the operation.

The undergraduates, it was learnt, missed their examination due to hold on Wednesday morning.

Our correspondent gathered that the EFCC officials, numbering about 16, came to Akure in two buses.

After reporting at the Divisional Police Station, they proceeded to cafes where they carried out their operations.

One of the cafés they visited was located on Oba Adesida Road.

It was learnt that the four officials who carried out the operation at the café first bought tickets and pretended to be browsing.

But suddenly they ordered all those who were browsing to raise their hands.

A source told our correspondent that a suspected yahoo boy escaped by jumping out through the window of a storey-building which houses a cafe.

The anti-graft officials screened 10 persons in the operation.

Another source said that those suspected were asked to log in to their e-mail accounts while the officials searched through the contents of their in boxes and sent items while those chatting were thoroughly screened.

After about two hours of screening, four persons suspected to be Internet fraudsters, were arrested and detained at the Divisional Police Station while the officials apologised to six persons who passed their tests.

It was also gathered that the manager of the café was arrested while some of the equipment used in the café were taken to the police station.

Our correspondent found that similar operations were also carried out in some other cafes.

Hurray!!!!!
The new EFCC is working efficiently. Thanks to Yaradua's rule of law and due process.

I wish the likes of Ribadu can read this; rule of law is not about arresting and charging fat corrupt polititians. It's simply going after yahoo boys operating in a small cafe in a small town. grin

This is great news.

EFCC arrests 16 in Akure, Onitsha cyber cafe raids

http://www.tribune.com.ng/03042008/news/news9.html

Men of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Wednesday arrested 16 suspected cyber fraudsters as they raided cyber cafes in Akure, Ondo State and Onitsha, Anambra State.

While 10 were arrested in Akure, six were arrested in Onitsha where several units of computers were confiscated.

In Akure, apart from the ‘yahoo boys’, owners of some of the cafes were also arrested, while many computer sets and other accessories were impounded by the detectives.

The raid, which affected cafes on Oyemekun Road and Oba Adesida Road, according to sources, was part of efforts at eradicating internet fraud in the state.

This was said to have followed reports that the internet fraudsters that were chased away from Lagos, Ibadan and other cities had relocated to Akure.

Many of the victims were caught unawares by the invasion of the detectives, as they were said to be involving in the act when they were arrested.

The EFCC team was said to have arrived Akure on Monday and mixed with the customers of cafes notorious for cyber crimes.

Those arrested were later locked up at the cells of the “A” Division of the Ondo State Police Command.

The Public Relations Officer of the Ondo State Police Command, Mr. Adeniran Aremu, confirmed that the EFCC was in the town to carry out the operation.

In Onitsha, the EFCC men, who came in an unmarked Toyota Hilux van, cordoned off the road leading to the famous Main Market, pounced on the operators, who were browsing at the cafe, questioned and searched them.

The leader of the squad said they were on a routine check and would release the arrested persons after interrogations.

A source told the Nigerian Tribune that the EFCC officials were acting on a tip off, adding that the cyber cafe had of late become a haven for youths who storm the place daily to send and access scam mails.

They should be on the look-out and arrest Bank Managers and staff of Western Union outlets too. They aid these boys in cashing 'maga' money sent through it for a percentage of the money.

Do they have the right to demand for e-mail and password without warrant? Is it proper for them to intrude into your privacy just like that?

This is just Dumb! I thought yahoo boys no longer carryout their unholy acts in cafes . . . C'mon . . . Internet access at home has gone mainstream. . .
This is just sad! We need to engage our youth. . so that the failed Re-branding exercise can have little effect. . .
Re: Efcc Officials Swoop On Yahoo Boys In Akure by naijamini(m): 3:03pm On Mar 27, 2010
@kosovo
I don't understand how this is dumb. It is part of the EFCC's job. I think it ought to be commended, with the caveat that it is not for show and is addressing other types of corruption e.g. at home internet fraud.

I don't see how this can be considered dumb, afterall policing is not simply about arresting criminals, but also to convince potential ones that they stand a better than 50-50 chance of being caught.
