Rivers State Bans Keke Napep In PHC by Nobody: 7:22am On Apr 04, 2013 |
Sorry Mods, I don't know where to post this. Government has banned tricycles, better known as Keke Napep, in Port Harcourt, the state capital and adjoining communities. The ban in Port Harcourt City Local Government Area also extends to Obio/Akpor, Oyigbo and Eleme areas. Controller-General of Rivers State Road Traffic Management Authority, TIMA-RIV, Mr. Nelson Jaja, who made the announcement, yesterday, said it was to check the spate of traffic offences by the tricycle riders. He said: “We have banned Keke operators in Port Harcourt metropolis to checkmate their criminal activities and reduce the traffic challenges posed by their activities. We don’t want to see them in prohibited areas henceforth.” The TIMARIV boss also hinted on plans to “arrest traders, who have converted major roads in Port Harcourt to their shops. They should vacate these major roads because apart from constituting a traffic offense, it is also very risky and dangerous.” The ban of tricycles has sparked off angry reactions from residents, who see the ban as insensitive on the part of government. Grace Hart, who lives at Oyigbo, said: “Since the ban of “Okada” (commercial motorbike) in Port Harcourt years back, the Keke has served as a reliable alternative for street movements in remote areas not plied by taxis. Why is government interested in frustrating the poor?” Justus Madu of Elelenwo, argued: “When Governor Chibuike Amaechi banned Okada in Port Harcourt, he introduced city buses to cushion the effect. Nothing of the sort had been considered here. So what does TIMARIV want those without cars to do, trek all the way?” www.vanguardngr.com/2013/04/rivers-bans-keke-napep-in-p-harcourt |

Guys (especially those in PH) what do u think about this? I think it's unfair cos in some areas it takes keke 2 save your day. Moreso, keke helps in those areas not plied by cabs. Your views pls |

sergio-zlatan: The same argument when Okada was banned. I would have loved a situation where govt controls their activities and not outright ban. Of a truth, they are fast becoming something else entirely. One thing is certain, PHians will adapt. |

Insensitivity of a Governor who thinks that all Port Harcourt residents work in Oil Company. Where are Labour Unions and Civil liberties when they are needed. Imagine the affrontry to label the tricycle operators as criminals. |

Ngwakwe: Insensitivity of a Governor who thinks that all Port Harcourt residents work in Oil Company. Have u heard or seen any Labour Union or Civil whatever protest in PH? Except its an arrangee thing if not, it doesn't work in Rivers State. Demdem: Nice talk. |

sergio-zlatan: I'll have to confirm before contributing. Keke has always been banned from major roads like Aba road, Olu Obasanjo, Ikwerre, East/West, NTA, Station, Azikiwe and Trans-Amadi. Okada still operates in Eleme, Obigbo and Aluu which are towns outside Port-Harcourt city and Obio/Akpo LGAs. |

So stupid move, it seems banning of motorcycles & tricycles is now a trend for some state governors now. It would have been great if he banned bikes instead of keke napep, this move won't work at least this time, owing to the fact that most towns in Nigeria aren't planned, there by making it cumbersome for people to get to places where buses won't go to. |
