Man Jailed 45 Years For Stealing Aregbesola’s Phone For stealing a N50,000 Sony Ericsson phone belonging to Governor Rauf Aregbesola, a 31-year-old Kelvin Ighodalo has been sentenced to 45-year imprisonment by an Osogbo High Court. Ighodalo stole the phone from the pocket of Aregbesola on November 27, 2010, when the governor was being inaugurated at Government Technical College, Osogbo. Justice Oyejide Falola, who heard the case, found Ighodalo guilty on six counts, which included conspiracy, stealing and fraud. He was sentenced to 10-year imprisonment for the first three counts and five years for each of the last three which included impersonation, obtaining property by falsehood and collusion. Falola, who ruled that Ighodalo deserved the jail term, held that the convict used the phone to obtain N500, 000 from the Owa of Ilesa, Oba Adekunle Aromolaran, while he obtained N200, 000 from Mr Shengen Rahman, an associate of the governor. The jail term, which Falola pronounced will run concurrently, means that Ighodalo will spend the next 10 years behind bars. Assistant principal state counsel, Mr Biodun Badiora, told the court that the convict had served six-year imprisonment in Ikoyi prison custody in connection with a murder case in 2005. Counsel to Ighodalo, Mr. Ameachi Ngwu, prayed the court to commit him to community service, stressing that the convict should not be incarcerated but rather be placed where people could see him as a convict. http://www.punchng.com/news/man-jailed-45-years-for-stealing-aregbesolas-phone/ http://www.emmanuelbabatunde.com/2013/04/man-sentenced-to-45-years-in-prison-for.html |

Nigeria - a country where an ordinary citizen stole a TV set and was sentenced to 25 years in prison, same court sentenced a public servant who looted/stole 80million naira of public fund to 18 months jail term. 7 Likes |

I'm surprised this din't raise any dust. this discretionary ruling by the judge is equally obscene like that of the pension fraud and the judge should be suspended. Nigerians won't look at critical areas like this. we are daily loaded with ACN/APC vs PDP fights all over the media for us to cheer. Its so unfortunate. even if we change from PDP to ACN We still have big problems with the judiciary. 5 Likes |

Culled from Fagro's FB page Let’s frame this argument properly and look beyond the party affiliation and person involved. And let’s read beyond the headline. There’s nothing wrong in the judgments passed by a court of competent jurisdiction on Kelvin Ighodalo – the young man who stole the Governor’s phone. The 45 years are to run concurrently. It means he is to spend 10 years in prison. In prison, a day is 12 hours. It further means he is to spend 5 years in prison. 10 Likes |

Being a nigerian thief, there are two things involved, its either u are a big thief or u are a small thief, if u are a big thief u are safe, but if u are a small thief there are two things involved, its either u steal from the masses or u steal from the politicians, if u steal from the masses u are safe, but if u steal from the politicians there are two things involved, its either u are sent to a prison or shot to death, if u are sent to a prison u are safe, but if u are shot to death, there is only one thing involved, u shall go to hell 35 Likes |

Stop misleading people the sentence will run concurrently as such the guy will only do 10 years in prison, furthermore the guy is charged not only for stealing the phone but for the various fraud he committed using the phone. Because some judges do things wrong does not mean there are no good ones, I think it serves the fraudster right. 8 Likes |

Alameyeisegha stole billions and was granted pardon. Bode George stole billions and was given only 2 years imprisonment. Maina was given a plea bargain and he paid just 750k and he is nowhere to be found. Someone stole a fifty thousand naira phone which the governor can buy hundreds of it and he gets 45years in jail? This country is sick! "spits " 5 Likes |

I think our justice system needs to spell out prison sentences the way they are. The guy is not going to spend 45 yrs in prison. Moreover, it isn't about the phone per se but the atrocities he committed with that phone. The guy impersonated the governor. The press put catchy headlines to sell, it's left to you to read the whole story. Our judiciary needs reformation tho. Maina, Lawan, subsidy thieves come to mind here. |
