Chief Co-ordinator of Gabros International Football Club of Nnewi, Olisa Onuchukwu, wants the government of Anambra State to tender an unreserved apology to the proprietor and president of the club, Chief Gabriel Chukwuma, over what he described as years of neglect of the club.

“Chief Gabriel Chukwuma had spent over N1.5billion on Gabros International Football Club, which has represented and projected the image of Anambra State in the past 15 years without assistance from successive governments in the state,” Onuchukwu submitted. “The government of the state should first and foremost, tender an unreserved apology to Chief Chukwuma for years of neglect before paying him reparation in form of tangible assistance to Gabros International FC,” he demanded.

“About a fortnight ago, Governor Peter Obi splashed over N100million on the quartet of amateur football club, Ikpeazu Redoubtables FC of Onitsha, Rojenny Sports Complex, Oba, Flying Eagles as well as ex-Rangers players, in his efforts to resuscitate and encourage sports in the state, while neglecting Gabros International FC of Nnewi, the only professional football club in the state,” he alleged. Onuchukwu is miffed by the recent reaction of the Governor’s Special Adviser on Sports, Arthur Ebunam, who labeled Gabros’ President, Chief Chukwuma, as an ungrateful person among other uncomplimentary remarks.

“Honestly, it is very shameful for Anambra State government to have reacted the way it did to a very detailed constructive criticism. A listening government should have capitalised on our complaints to gain more popularity by reacting positively instead of trying to cover up with reprisal reactions,” Onuchukwu stated. “Chief Chukwuma is not, and has never been an employee of the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

He is neither a member of Anambra State Football Association. He has never been involved in any government sports programme directly or indirectly as claimed by the state government. His involvement has been his usual assistance to the state government by allowing the state to make use of Gabros Stadium in Nnewi free of charge, until the recent construction of other stadia in the state,” he stated.
