@Hnd-holder

In the UK they look down at HND certificate because they spend just 2 years to acquire it without carrying out a research project, while Bsc guys spend 3 years and carry out a research project. Can't somebody explain to Nigerians that HND in nigeria requires you to spend atleast 5 years and you must carryout  research projects after your first 2 years (ND) and in your final year HNDII?? HND certificate is equivalent to a Degree in Nigeria but because of it's irrelevance in the UK nigerians started looking down at it here too.

The UK DIPLOMA is Equal To Nigerian WASC While their HND is Lower in content and contact hour

ANS THAT IS Why This Discrimination Between B.Sc & HND. Nigerian HND is equal or more than bachelor degrees
B.Tech,
BSc
B.Eng etc

Confusion in the house
Re: Why This Discrimination Between B.Sc & HND? by ishmael(m): 10:17am On Jun 20, 2007
But will they agree?? They hate the name HND and they look at it the same way British look at their HND now; you know UK HND is less than a Bachelor's Degree.

Honestly you are very correct. Let HND die, but let the polytechnics continue to exist and let everybody go for Bsc or BTech. Nigerians and employers in Nigeria hate that name HND.
Re: Why This Discrimination Between B.Sc & HND? by Hndholder(m): 4:01pm On Jun 20, 2007
Unless you call it polytechnic university. Nigerian hates Polytechnic they call it senior Technical college. So let the Polytechnic die too.

yes you are right. Let them convert polytechnics to polytechnic universities, that is when Nigerians will appreciate anything that comes out of there.

Because of the polyechnic's practical skill
that is one of the reason they hate the HND.
So that degree holders can come and do the practical work,
How many houses collapse last week? They are the work of degree holders

You are correct. But Nigerians may begin to look at it that it is the handi work of polytechnic graduates, trust Nigerians; any thing bad goes to polytechnics and their HND graduates.
Re: Why This Discrimination Between B.Sc & HND? by Hndholder(m): 4:48pm On Jun 20, 2007
HND holders need not trade words with them. GRADUATES they call themselves but are they not full of empty pride? Why are they not Talking again. WE HND HOLDERS has won.

Ismaheal Hnd Holder

To be candid with ourself do you think changing polytechnics to university really worth it with the level of some of our polytechnics in Nigeria. I had the opportunity to visit several polytechnic in Nigeria they are not well funded and their infrastructures are nothing to talk about

I am of the Opinion that some selected Polytechnic should be allowed to award BTech
Re: Why This Discrimination Between B.Sc & HND? by Hndholder(m): 1:58pm On Jun 26, 2007
Thank you. some Universities do not merit a University. Do you know that some Federal university loan equipment from some polytechnic to meet NUC accreditations? Only two polytechnics had the privilege of the word change.

What is on the ground is cancellation of HND or let near-by University with adequate staff and tools take over the Former HND to be known as B.Tech. Majority of the University too are poorly funded. No university in Nigeria met the world rating.

We do not want HND in Nigeria because Nigerian hate Polytechnic and HND

What is your own opinion as regard the Changing only 2 polytechnic in the counytry to University do u think it solve the desrimination?

I think all Polytechnic in the country should be re-accredited based on the new NBTE or NUC standard successful polytechnic will then be allowed to award BTech or converted to University
Re: Why This Discrimination Between B.Sc & HND? by radeniran(m): 2:15pm On Jun 26, 2007
Some courses got to be scrapped from the polytechnic like Legal Studies etc because the schools that offer such courses lack what it takes to offer such courses. If UI LASU and the likes can be stopped by NUC to produce graduate from their LAW faculty with their long standing history and pedigree in the education industry how much more glorified technical schools

My opinion is that some state own Polytechnic like Calabar Polytechnic Now University of Science and Technology will follow.
We need the middle level man power and that is the ND not HND so More ND graduates are needed. Now non everybody want HND or Bsc. So The HND was treated as the  middle level. Once we have those universities in place the two City Universities will provide research level up to PhD for the HND and the New B.Tech.

What ever, those that brought Polytechnics converted them to University. Harvard was a polytechnics. There will be no more polytechnic but University college of Technology for ND only.

It was further cleared that all those art course will not be in the New college of Technology

I attended the "GLORIFIED TECHNICAL SCHOOL" call polytechnic now a superior to those who attended the "almighty" University. Do not throw the baby with the water. It is not the school but the person.
Remember those with legal studies do not grow to be a lawyer. It is a way of fund raising in those school by running course with strange names. Of what use is legal studies or public admin in POLYTECHNICS?
Re: Why This Discrimination Between B.Sc & HND? by radeniran(m): 2:38pm On Jun 26, 2007
What about The Polytechnic Ibadan, The Polytechnic Auchi, and some other old Polytechnics in the country do u mean they will still remain as polytechnic because they are state owned.
I think the State Government should start to upgrade their polytechnics to university with the level of inconsistency in the federal govt decisions about the HND BSC descrimination
Re: Why This Discrimination Between B.Sc & HND? by radeniran(m): 2:42pm On Jun 26, 2007
I attended a Polytechnic too but i want us to objective with our argument about scrapping Polytechnic dont we need Technical education in this country again or what?
Re: Why This Discrimination Between B.Sc & HND? by Hndholder(m): 2:51pm On Jun 26, 2007
But we have Technical colleges awarding Diploma like the oversea High school. Our own National Diploma is what British Branded as HND. Nigerian HND has too much contact hours and work load to be called Middle level.
radeniran:

so the polytechnic is not a technical school.

There are some courses like Marketing Purchasing and Supply etc been offered in this "glorified technical schools" grin the number of gradute been turned out in the polys are large and i think about 2-5 universities offer this courses presently in nigeria what will happen to the industry that requires all this skills are they going to continue to put square peg in a round hole.

Where Mechanical Engr work in the Banking Hall wasting all the knowledge he/she used the whole 5yrs to acquire to count money as tellers

Govt should take time to consider their stand about technical education in the country technocrats should be allowed to look into this issue critically and not mediocres that are after what the Govt want to give as allowances for confusing us
Re: Why This Discrimination Between B.Sc & HND? by Hndholder(m): 3:23pm On Jun 26, 2007
Our association was involved in this at the beginig. NATE the only HND holder oganized body.
Re: Why This Discrimination Between B.Sc & HND? by ishmael(m): 7:25am On Jun 29, 2007
The discrimination against polytechnic graduates has been laid to rest in peace now that the Federal Government has reversed the proposed merger of polytechnics with universities. FG also want polytechnics to run MTech and PhD degrees. Polytechnic lecturers will now have 65 years as their retiring age like their university counterparts. Yar'adua is really an educationist.
