ShyM-X:

The variation of the F-7 that China has is different from the ones they sold to Nigeria. And China probably has more than 500 of those jets. That's the chinese military doctrine - mass production at a cheaper cost to protect homeland. The Chinese F-7s are for defense - just something to scramble if there's any threat. And they're integrated with the air defense units.

MI-35P is on the same level as Apache and a lot of countries have them in their inventory - nothing special. Suuth Africa produces its own attack helicopters and they're one of the best in the world. So why would they need mi24s? Shyte, Algeria and Egypt have Chinook. tongue

What anti-submarine capabilities? You mean the French exocet rockets that everyone can now figure out? Well, all the francophone countries Africa also have those rockets - nothing special.

Those ships are just there to gulp your money. And there are rules attached to how you can use them. They're basically a waste of time, to be honest. Just good for patrol. undecided

First of all, I'm no fan of the chinese F-7, but we aqcuired a much later version with better avionics suit and a cranked delta wing that improves its performance and combat radius. It may not be ideal, but it's a reasonable stopgap till we get something better.

And pls don't put the Apache in the same class as the Mi-24 Hind and other variants. Don't get me wrong, the AH-64 isba high-tech beast of war, but it is damn too maintenance intensive. The Mi-24 on the other hand is a true war monster. Heavily armed and armoured, this beast will outrun and outshoot the Apache. And it is so rugged, it canrun on PMS. And guesswhat? It can equally serve as a utility helo, carrying 7 heavily armed soldiers, or, wait for it.........MORE AMMO!! If the South African Rooikat was better, how come the Hind outsold it? Oh, and since when was the lumbering Chinook an attack helicopter?

Oh one more thing. The Nigerian Navy already had the French Exocet missiles in its inventory since the 1980s.

Anyway, I'm happy that we are getting back on track. In 1988 I was excited when I heard that they were going to commission the first made in Nigeria air force plane ( a trainer/reconaisance plane), the Air Beetle. I was a bit disappointed when I discovered that it was based on Van's Aircraft. However, it was a beginning.

Air Beetle

Political instability and changes in government meant that we did not improve on that start. The return to democracy has seen us make a fresh start with the following:

Igirigi. An armoured personnel carrier that's built by the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON).

Proforce. An armoured personnel carrier that's built by a private Nigerian company.

NNS Andoni. The first Nigerian built shore patrol boat, it was conceived in 2006 and built by the Nigerian Navy and a private Nigerian company.

And the Amebo series.

No, don't under-grade yourself, our country or our race. We are capable of doing way way better than this.

We should just try upgrading our drones, work on an indigenous fighter, and also manufacture our own missiles.

Oga naptu2, that's not the proforce APC. That is the APC built by the ekiti brothers during late president yar'adua's (RIP) administration.

Nigeria's local defence industry is growing at a satisfactory pace. However, we can still do better.

So you are actually a nigerian and you keep saying "your country" as if you are not part of the system. Your fellow compatriots built a drone with the little resources available to them, You call it scrap metal. What have you done to make this country proud.
You find it easy to take a neutral position and laugh at our shortcomings where i come from, your type of people are refered to as bastards. You are an infidel, you are unfaithfull, you are a sly.
Go and nationalise to become an algerian because of fighter jets.

Thanks for the name-calling. However, if I decide to give you what you're asking for, they'll say shymmex has an acidic mouth. But they won't talk about your post and those posts from my early days on nl that made me start cursing people out. grin

Those things are scrap metal, take it or leave it. Nigeria should be on Iran's level by now. We should be building our own fighter jets, tanks, mini-submarines, missiles etc.. We're talented enough to do all that. However, it's people like you who celebrate mediocrity that made the country useless.

Even if it's a stopgap, we should at least have other air crafts, even if it's the Su-24s. Nigeria is just too big and too rich to be operating just alpha jets and J-7. Heck, before the UK received the Eurofighter Typhoon - Panavia Tornado F3 was the stopgap.

Anyway, I added Chinook because I don't think there's any other helicopter better than Chinook when it comes to heavy-lift support. And the SA rooikat is impressive for being in the same discussion as both Apache and Mi-24, for an African country.

Yeah, my apologies for the mix-up. That APC was made by the Obasa brothers (some of the APCs were bought by various governments and donated to the police). Below is one of Proforce's APCs.

All the boats/ APC's in the photos I posted are made in nigeria.

That armoured boat is a catamaran. It seats 30+ and 3 crew members. It is built by a port-harcourt based vessel building company.

In addition to the PF1 APC proforce defence builds( pictured above), proforce also manufactures a BM350-16Z (4x4) mine resistant ambush protected vehicle or MRAP.

Onlytruth:

If we really tell ourselves the truth we would remember that in advanced countries, these are NOT made by solely government owned outfits.
These are PRIVATE SECTOR driven.
That Nigeria is not meeting her potential yet is because private businesses in Nigeria are LAZY and want short cuts and quick money, all of which never produce innovation.
Look at Innoson for example; I bet you he is more successful already than PAN Nigeria. He will go places soon.

The sooner we have local PRIVATE companies going into arms production, the better for Nigeria.

The private sector will only make what they can sell. Who will buy? When Nigerian Army and security agencies leave arms and ammunitions produced by DICON for foreign produced ones. Even after order from above, they still patronized foreign made ones. When the private sector know what you invested millions in will be bought, they will verily produce it

The ekiti brothers, do they have a plant here in nigeria? You have any idea if they are still in business?

During NADCEL 2013, the COAS named the army's strategic local partners, Modant defence ( boats pictured above), proforce defence and another indigenous defence company that produces surveillance equipment (equipment wasn't shown for security reasons). however nothing on the ekiti brothers. I do hope they are still in business though.

They delivered fire fighting vehicles to a state government last year (I can't remember if it was Ogun State or Oyo State). That's the last time I heard about them. They set up their factory in Ekiti State (that's where the Prowler was manufactured). Here's a link to their website. http://lagos411.com/obasasv/index.html
