U know what they say about stupidity from the top trickling down and affecting many lives. The cycle of stupidity starts when you award a contract to protect our waterways to militants. These militants in collusion with NIMASA then decide to effect a blockade on vessels which are exempt from levies and taxes. NLNG goes to court to contest the charges and obtains a stay. NIMASA and their militant contractors refuse to remove the blockade because they want to extort NLNG. NLNG can't supply LNG and natural gas and thus cannot fufil its obligations. Nigeria loses money and the price of kerosene skyrockets. That's what one single act of stupidity can cause.

It is not fair to bring the president into every issue that raises its head without knowing the facts first.Read the post and you will see that the faceoff is between NLNG and NIMASA.The president is probably not aware till this time because he is not in charge of those govt. agencies and can only act on the report given to him.Lets be fair in our criticism.

We are a nation producing Crude Oil and kerosene is just a by-product of crude oil!

...and yet Nigerians who dont even have the benefit of using Electric Cookers (since electricity supply is near zero!)
have to pay through their nose, for Kerosene as well?

Yea, l gerrit, GEJ is really PERFORMING!
Mutherfeckers

I guess it is only in Nigeria that the president is NEVER AWARE of any problem affecting the masses who voted him in?

4 Play: It's hilarious that there were protests in respect of the petrol price increase when most of the Nigerian poor are rural poor whose petrol use is relatively minimal. Kerosene is more important to the poor but the long running dislocation of its market price from the official price hardly generates attention.

They should scrap the fuel subsidy and retain only a kerosene subsidy. Fuel subsidy is a retrogressive welfare measure as it rewards the wealthy more, they having a far higher petrol consumption than any segment of society.
u shld do ur analysis well, both d rich and d poor wil be affected by fuel subsidy cos increase in fuel price means increase in transportation fee then increase in goods and services.

endy247: u shld do ur analysis well, both d rich and d poor wil be affected by fuel subsidy cos increase in fuel price means increase in transportation fee then increase in goods and services.

The justification for fuel subsidy is that it helps the poor but I will suggest that there are far better ways to help the poor. The money budgeted for fuel subsidy will double our education and health combined budgets. Free education and healthcare is far more beneficial to the poor than cheap fuel.

Using fuel subsidy as a welfare measure is regressive as you benefit more the wealthier you are as fuel consumption correlates to wealth. If you are a rural dwelling poor person, most Nigerians live in rural areas, who simply lives off subsistence farming, your fuel consumption is minimal, almost non-existent. There are many Nigerians in the rural area who don't use transport or require it.

To use a personal example, my mum often runs her generator 12hrs a day, largely to keep her freezer cold or for things as mundane as watching TV. In addition, her driver warms her SUVs every morning. All these activities require the use of subsidised fuel. Her next door neighbour who is poor has no car and no generator and lives off subsistence farming and petty trading with a rather large family. The subsidy element of my mum's fuel consumption will mean that she will get more money from the Govt than her poorer neighbour. The bizarre thing about fuel subsidy is that you benefit more the wealthier you are and the more you consume fuel. This often explains why anti-fuel subsidy protests rarely spread outside urban enclaves.

In the 50s, 60s and 70s, we managed to make tremendous progress in improving living standards without fuel subsidy by spending hugely on health and education. Awolowo is famous for his free education and not subsidy programmes. As we became a major oil producer, we became oil drunk and suddenly got the idea that the way to eradicate poverty is by subsiding fuel consumption. The fact that we have progressively got poorer since doesn't seem to have made an impression.

Hopefully you're still an active nairalander.

Kero was #50 officially when you made this comment, this afternoon after you all voted in "change", a liter of kero sells for #800.

It's obvious the fresh air is better than "changi"
