I was in lagos recently and dismally observed that despite fashola's efforts at revamping the city's skyline, the old NITEL telephone cables totally undermine all his efforts. Fashola has to do whatever it takes to remove this eyesore as it gives a highly gloomy overall impression of a totally dysfunctional urban area. See a few pictures below; note they are far from been the worst areas

The houses would look great if repainted.

Just making an observation, nothing to do with Gov Fashola.

I know the days of the overhead electricity lines are numbered because Lagos state is laying new underground power transmission cable for the state and full scale privatization is around the corner but the land line telephone infrastructure is a different problem..

They should just get rid of the land line telephone infrastructure since it's now worthless and obsolete.

Op good and worthy observation, wondered why it stayed this long myself. By removing only these poles I believe a significant facelift will be achieved. Please MOD send this to FP so that relevant people can see it

Sometimes I wish it's possible to legislate house painting and repainting because it gets very disappointing to spend billions and billions on infrastructure and environmental upgrades and still end up with washed out and dreary looking houses all over the place..

Its due to the effects of weathering.

Repainting is supposed to be done annually but not many people can afford that.

There are many countries out there with the same weather problem, but they don't have the same old and dreary looking house problem. Weathering is only part of the problem, the type and composition of paints and related products in the market place are pretty much worthless because they are not properly formulated to withstand our weather and terrain hence washing out just months or a year painting.

Another thing is the economy and how much disposable income ordinary people have in their pockets. Over here, how much is it going to take to repaint your house, especially if it is the outside? People have the means for such small projects or hire a small company of students who do such paintings during the summer! In Nigeria, to find even a modern paintbrush, you will have to go to an upscale store or something. Over here, there are painting accessories at the dollar store, if you gather all the small changes even lying around your home for one year and it comes to $20, you could perhaps buy a few paint brushes, sponges etc. A can of paint is affordable at Home Depot, and there you go! Also, houses on the exterior in a lot of cases are not finished with paints but with bricks, glass, etc but they are all well maintained regardless. @ The hanging Nitel lines, the retardeenic FG should use the money from their Nitel to clean it up or is it not their property?

You are very right...

...but the thing is, but this is the same society that spends billions on owambe and other trivial issues, this is the same society that collects years of rents in advance from tenants. The state should be able to force them to repaint their houses at at least every 3-4 years. They should also make repainting a part of the CO requirement and clearance.

Something just got to be done...

With the Nitel lines, it's just unfortunate that the FG of Nigerian is a major impediment and enemy of growth and development in Lagos state and other parts of Nigeria. It's not by force to hold on to worthless and ugly infrastructures that you don't need and can not maintain.

Yes they make everything political, but you can not sit on your hands and allow the rot to continue forever.
