The Aguda are freed slaves that were repatriated from Brazil and Cuba. They settled in Lagos in a place called Portuguese Town or Popo Aguda. While in Brazil and Cuba they learnt how to build exquisite houses and they plied this trade when they returned to Lagos. Two famous members of the Aguda community were Hilario Campos (Campos Square is named after him) and Placido Adeyemo Assumpciao (later known as Adeyemo Alakija).
