Infact to improve this process, I suggest that the LASG round up these disadvantaged souls and put them in 'Reconcilliation Camps' where they can await reconciliation with their families in a safe and secure environment - locations like Alagbon and Kirikiri spring to mind due to their secure nature - protecting them from unscrupulous elements who may seek to exploit them

While their families are being tracked down, residents of the camp could be enrolled in social rehabilitation programmes like Block-Making, Road-Sweeping, Refuse-Collection and Outreach to other people who wish to be reconciled with their long lost families

These rehabilitation programmes could run for around 3 months to ensure that the beggars are re-skilled and empowered, before being reconciled with their loving families in a humane and warm environment...

So if I were to shoot someone, I'll just explain to the court that I only reunited him with his creator right??

Kudos to LASG

Afam4eva: The Lagos state governments must think Nigerians are 1diots. If they were reuniting these people with their families, did these people as for it? And why were those that were supposedly reunited with their families unhappy about the event and gave account of how they were arrested and bundled by the task force. In my 27 years as a human being, i've never seen a government that lies the way the Lagos state government does. They lie with blatant shamelessness. I won't be surprised if they consult from Lie Mohammed from time to time. kai.

Well this Is a mixed bag. On one hand, it smell fishy. On the other hand it seems applaudable. As this will reduce traunces in the cities, and over supplies of labor for inavailable opportunities. People should get back to basics. Learn to make themselves usefull in a more humane environments. Our cities are too congested with idle folks looking for mugus like vultures. Basic farming, cash crops farming in a seditary clime can substain family.other governors should borrow a leaf from fashola, to reorganize their teeming aimless labor force.our labor supply should be properly managed. As for the destitutes, since We don't run a welfare state, I think the responsibility Is for our family or kin folks to bear the responsibilites.short of that, beggars should be conscripted to labor-camps where they can be made usefull under the supervision of the state or private organs like the church etc.

plaindealer: Its all about the family...

Looking forward to a whole lot of non stop family reunion.
I am very sure it is illegal - Ω̴̷̷̴̩̩̩̥̐͠☺ matter how u put it- to reunite people with families under the bridge at 3AM.
Reunite families takes a lot of steps... Such as locating the family, investigating that the individual is actually member of that family, accessing if it will be beneficial to the individual to be reunited, if the family is capable of taking care of the individual, and so on and all and these step must be document and in most case the actual reunion is video recorded or at the least photographed other wise it wld be deportation which will be illegal under Nigerian law and Constitution.

Hmmm... Let us not be too tribalistic in our thoughts...
How do u mean dey wanted ά ride home?
Lagos is ά sovereign state and every Nigeria is free to live, trade and have ά life weather physically or mentally challenged or not...
Or do these traders want ά ride home to?
www.nairaland.com/1376937/igbo-traders-warned-accept-yoruba :

The traders of Igbo origin operating at the Ladpo
Auto Spare Parts Market, Mushin, Lagos have
been told to accept Yoruba man as leader or leave
the state.
The ordeal was handed down to the protesting
traders due to their continued resistance of Alhaji
Oladotun Abibu Oki as the Babaloja of the market.
Lamenting their ordeal, the royal father of the
market Chief Nwosu told reporters that “99
percent of marketers in Ladipo are Igbo. To be
fair to all, he should come and contest if elected he
will be accepted. “We appeal to the South East
governors, Igbo leaders across the globe to come
to our aid. They asked us to go back to our
villages, if we are not ready to accept the
leadership of Alhaji Oki. We pay our taxes in
Lagos and have every right as Nigerians to buy and
sell anywhere in the state.”
Meanwhile LACEC Secretary General, Pastor
Steve Ijioma told reporters : “There has been
controversy over the imposition of Alhaji Oki as the
Babaloja. This led to several clashes and it was
agreed that Alhaji Oki should restrict his
authority in his unit pending when the matter is
sorted out. During the environmental sanitation, he
encroached on our territory and we resisted. The
protest is to pass the message across that we do
not want his leadership rather a free and fair
election should be conducted. It is a pity that an
Area Commander could openly ask us to accept
Babaloja or return to our various states.”
LACEC, according to the President General,
Comrade Ikechukwu Animalu, is opposed to the
imposition of Alhaji Oladotun Abibu Oki because
“out of the 34 existing units in the market, Alhaji
Oki controls only a unit. There is still an on going
battle over his appointment as the new Babaloja. It
was his attempt to impose his authority on us that
led to the crisis that erupted on Thursday. We
demand a formal election, so that the people will
decide who their leader will be.
“We also appeal to the police to be fair in this
controversial matter and call to order those who
openly ordered us to either accept the imposition or
return to our various states.”
Stating his part of the story, Alhaji Oki said that
he was ready to dialogue with aggrieved members
of LACEC to find a way forward. He told Sun: “I
was nominated two years ago to be installed the
Babaloja of the market.
LACEC through several petitions frustrated that
move and the process was delayed. However two
months ago, the late Abibat Mogaji finally installed
me. To pass their message across they did not
attend my installation, which was held in June 27,
2013.”

manny4life:

As much as it a real pity, this is one of few times I blame GEJ really badly for not using his executive authority.

may be Goodluck Jonathan can explain this:

The Abuja Environmental Protection Board
(AEPB) arrested 144 beggars and other
destitute persons in the city centre within the
last three weeks, an official said. The Head of
Information and Outreach Programme, AEPB,
Mr Joe Ukairo, told newsmen in Abuja on
Tuesday that the board made the arrests
during a “massive operation’’. Ukairo said the
board had adopted stricter and sustainable
measures of evacuating beggars from the
streets.
“We discovered that they still come to the
street after evacuation but this time around
we are taking more stringent measures to
make sure they don’t come back. “What these
beggars do is when they see our vehicle
coming they run away but now there are
undercover approaches adopted by the board
to tackle this problem,’’ he said. Ukairo said
that the board would, henceforth, take
pictures and personal data of all beggars
arrested before returning them to their states
of origin. He said the step would enable the
board to know those who returned to the
street. The official said that after returning
the beggars home, AEPB would contact their
various state and local governments to be
part of their rehabilitation. Ukairo said that
without proper rehabilitation, it would be
very difficult to permanently get the beggars
off the streets of Abuja.
He said any beggar who wished to stay back
in the FCT would be taken to the
rehabilitation centre in Bwari Area Council to
learn a trade, such as carpentry, handicraft,
tailoring, soap making, among others.
“We discovered that the street tends to be
more lucrative for the beggars than the
government efforts to rehabilitate them and
provide vocational training,” he said.
Commenting on the reappearance of hawkers
in Wuse Market, Ukairo said the board would
not tolerate their activities in the city centre.
He said that the AEPB noticed that miscreants
hid under the cover of hawkers and traders
to snatch bags and other valuables from
residents at night. Ukairo said the board had
given 72 hours notice to hawkers to evacuate
Wuse Market and environs and stressed that
`there is no amount of sentiment that will
legalise illegality. “Government is ready to
support small scale businesses but it must be
within the provision of the law.‘’ He advised
that the hawkers go to the area councils to
start their businesses. He called on residents
to respect the board’s enforcement squad
and report any form of unethical behaviour
from them. (NAN)

Former Governor of Abia State, Chief Orji Uzor Kalu, has given the Lagos State Government a seven-day ultimatum to apologise to the 67 persons of Igbo ethnic nationality allegedly deported from Lagos to Onitsha in Anambra State or he would head to court to defend their interest.

Kalu said there was no law in the country, which empowers a state or governor to deport any Nigerian to any part of the country.

In a statement made available to THISDAY Monday, Kalu said there was right to freedom of movement for every Nigerian as enshrined in Section 41 of the 1999 Constitution.

While describing the action of the state government was lawless and vexatious, the former governor equally condemned it in strong terms, saying it threatens the corporate existence of the country.

Besides, the former governor argued that it was an open secret that the Igbo contribute about 55 per cent to the Lagos economy.

“It is appalling to learn that the deported Igbo were even detained in Ikorodu for about six months before their illegal deportation.

“They were taken to Onitsha in four buses, escorted by anti-riot policemen," he said.

One of them, Osondu Mbuto, a trader from Ohaozara in Ebonyi State, was on his way to his shop on December 18, 2012 when he was arrested by officials ofthe state’s Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI)and detained for no reason until he was deported in his father's land.

“The reaction of the state government that the Igbo were deported to reunite them with their families was the worst insult to any race.

“Governor Fashola's Special Adviser on Youths and Social Development, Dr. Enitan Dolapo Badru, said: ‘The end result is to reunite them back with their families.’

“What an affront against the collective will of Ndigbo or any other race in Nigeria to live and do business in any part of the country?

“The action of the state government is not only wicked but a clear breach of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended.

“To worsen the matter, most of those deported are not even indigenes of Anambra State. Is Anambra State now a dumping ground for any act of illegality? Is Lagos State Government above the law of the country? If not, can it operate another set of laws without recourse to constitution amendment? Is it not a travesty of justice that officers of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) were even used for this illegal act against the Nigerian state? Was the supervising officer, who allowed the deployment of the policemen, not told that they were going to be used for the deportation of Nigerians they were paid by tax payers' money to protect in their fathers' land?

“The action is a gross infraction to the rights of the deportees to dwell in any part of Nigeria without discrimination. With this wicked, crude and primitive deportation, I just wonder why a component unit of Nigeria, under the authority and supremacy of a constitution would choose to be lawless in such an unconstitutional conduct. Not even underthe military would such an action have happened.

“Even if a criminal offence was committed, the place to take them to is the court, not for them to be deported. The action of the Lagos State Government is lawless as it is vexatious and I condemn it in strong terms because it threatens the existence of our country. All patriotic Nigerians should say no to this xenophobic action of Lagos State Government because it usurps the powers of the federal government and disregards our constitution.

“I demand a public apology from the governor within seven days to all those illegally deported and a repeat of such anact must be stopped or I will head to court to defend the interest of the Ndigbo in Lagos. Enough is enough.”

As if it is not enough to insult a people by targeting them for ridicule and brazen injustice, you further compound issues by insulting their collective intelligence. Yet, the ignoble laureate they regard as their hero has the audacity to go to Port Harcourt to preach 'democracy'.

I regret that I would not be able to participate in subjecting that old bâstard to the jungle justice he deserves if he dares set foot in Port Harcourt.
Re: Lagos Didnt Deport Beggars, Only Reunited Them With Their Families by Nobody: 9:19am On Jul 30, 2013
naptu2: The reason why nobody has been able to sue is simply because nobody has been deported.

People who violate environmental sanitation laws are given 4 options (previously they were given 3 options).

1) Go to a rehabilitation centre

2) Go to jail.

3) Repatriation/re-integration

4) Community service.

Basically, they make a choice.

Furthermore, it is not only non-lagosians that are given the choice of re-integration. If the arrested person is from Lagos, the ministry will search for the person's relatives and reunite him with his family.

The goal is to ensure that the person has no reason to commit the offence again.

Think about it, it would be a waste of resources to simply round up people and expel them, because they will simply get on the next bus to Lagos.

Note: the process is well documented.

I used to respect this guy, since I erroneously thought he was quite knowledgeable and objective. Unfortunately, his recent posts expose him as a terribly jaundiced, tribalistic, clannish, and shamelessly prejudiced character, no different from the other oily ACN worshippers trolling all over NL turning truth on its head with their hypocrisy. Now, one can no longer be deceived by his pretensions.

If you read the report about the ILLEGAL DEPORTATION of Nigerians from Lagos to Onitsha, you would have read that the victims were deported AGAINST THEIR WILL, and to a state other than their states of origin for that matter. How dare you and your fellow oily hypocrites come here to tell bare-faced lies about "re-integration" or "reunification"? So you take a Nigerian that hails from Ebonyi State but is LEGALLY resident in Lagos State, and forcefully deport him or her to a dangerous bridge-head in Anambra State in the middle of the night, and call that "reunification"? In any case, how many Igbo destitutes would you find in Lagos, compared to the Hausa/Fulani and Yoruba ones that are uncountable? If you have any truth in you, how many Igbo beggars have you encountered in the streets of Lagos? How come, then, you hateful twerps are more interested in 'reintegrating' igbo people, against their wish?

Look, a time would soon come when this matter would be taken up with the seriousness it deserves. You tribalistic, hatefully envious, lazy, oil-eating buffoons would get more than you bargained for. Just wait for it.

If they had been children under the age of 18, eye witnesses would have also said so.

Are they saying that they took them to their homes or contacted their families to pick them up? Or did they just dump children in the middle of no where?

I think they are lying.........this is actually embarrassing. I though the Lagos administration was more principled than this.

I'm disappointed at the crude way this was handled.
