Ikpeba & Adepoju Differ On Oboabona's Arsenal Trial Request by Asports: 9:33am On Aug 01, 2013
Ex-internationals,Victor Ikpeba and Mutiu Adepoju, have varying views following a failed possible move to Arsenal,of Super Eagles defender Godfrey Oboabona.

Arsenal reportedly wanted to take Oboabona on trials before they can offer him any deal, which the Sunshine Stars player opposed to,adding that his exploits with the national team in the past one year, has elevated him above the ‘Trials level.’

While Ikpeba believes that Oboabona is not above trials,Adepoju feels it is a downgrade, considering that he has played a pivotal role in the Super Eagles defence, since 2013.

Speaking to MTNFootball.com,Ikpeba said: “Oboabona was wrongly advised, he should have gone for the trials even if he does not make it into Arsenal, another English side would have seen him.”

“I know he would say he has won the AFCON and plays for Sunshine Stars but he should understand that it’s not the same way these European coaches view European and South America players they view African players.”

“Yes, we have talent but you need to understand how they play, adjust to their weather and a lot of things, so I think he should have gone for the trials because I know Wenger has a lot of respect for African players.”

But Adepoju differs, speaking to The Punch, the former Super Eagles ‘Headmaster’ said that Oboabona has passed the level of trials.

“He (Oboabona) has passed that level having played for the national team and especially playing a major role in winning the African cup. Trials are meant for players who have not established themselves at that level. I am not sure that Wenger would ask any South American player featuring in his national team to go through trials.”

“I know it is a great opportunity to play for Arsenal but that does not mean that a player at that level should now reduce himself starting at trials level. The Nigeria national team is not a small team and he has established himself in the starting list. Oboabona took the right decision; that’s the way I feel about it.”

So is Oboabona above trials?

Ok lah, wish him all the best though and hope sooner or later he will land himself a mouth-watery offer at another big club.

Keep missing opportunities in life and continue blaming others . . . .

Football clubs in Europe are run as business concerns not based on empty sentiments.

The laws of demand and supply come into play here not pride and unnecessary jingoism.

Its not about whether you've won nations cup (or world cup). . . . .the simple question is how many clubs are on the queue for Oboabona ? Are Barcelona, Bayern Munich, AC Milan or even stoke and cardiff running after him.

Wenger is a business man, he probably likes Oboabona but he's not yet convinced so why won't he invite him for trials ?

and for Oboabona, until opportunities slaps him in the face and body slams him, he probably wouldn't recognize it.
This guy had better go for the trials unless there is something he is scared of and not willing to tell us.

As for Adepoju, giving bad advice, was he not playing in the spanish division two (racing satandar) as a super eagles regular ? Why didn't he vex and pack his bags back to 'sooting stars', Since being an eagles star should have made him bigger than that ?

These are the kind of players that at the end of their career will be looking for someone to blame when even less talented players would have counted italy, spain e.t.c in their dossier of countries they've played professionally.

Wilson Palacios was a regular with the Honduran National team before he was called up for a trial with Arsenal. Wenger was impressed but yet not impressed enough.he then called up Steve Bruce who was coach of Birmingham to sign the boy up. The boy had a good season with them and from then played a pivotal role for Tottenham Hotspurs and now, he is an integral member of the Stoke City team.
Till today, he say he owes his success in England to Arsene Wenger who called him up for trials, saw his talent and offered him to other clubs.

Oboabona is just an arrogant, ego-bloated, deluded, hopelessly over-rated player.

he would regret this one day

Why would Arsena Wenger offer an established international a trial? He did thesame thing with Zlatan and he turned him down. The likes of Squllaci, Djourou etc are they better than Oboabona? Wenger should go Bleep himself...

Well, for now not really. Maybe when African nations start winning the World Cup, and African leagues get better visibility with the rest of the world.

Adepoju's viewpoint is noble but impractical.

It's a bit down grading. Wenger could be very funny at times. He sed the same thing to Ibrahamovic< but his agent hit back on Wenger.
But in Ogbonna's scenario, its quite different. Our league has not really grown to that stage. I think he shud just go

He should have gone for it without thinking anyone was degrading Him cos they wouldn't have approached him at first if the didn't think He is worth it.
There is no way anyone can compare sunshine Stars with Arsenal F C. Just as @OP cited, Wenger has a lot of respect for African Players and buys them even more than Chelsea. Nigerian Players and their PRIDE I guess.

It is only Arsenal or Wenger fans that would diss Obabuna. He would still play in Europe. After next year world Cup, the whole world would still see him. :DIt is only Arsenal or Wenger fans that would diss Obabuna. He would still play in Europe. If this lad knows /feels he's good, let him go and prove himself. Besides, playing in the nations cup against african defenders, is a different ball game from playing at the highest level. As with most African player, most are physically skilled but technically unsound. Often times, most teams drop them for that. Some have adaptability issues. Besides , performing in the trials, would help his career overall as other clubs could sign him if Arsenal does not sign him. Wenger is a coach with alot of experience in grooming young players, so i feel he has very good basis.

Oboabona is "that GOOD" and thats why he's a first team player for your national team. I support Adepoju entirely on this call.

because you win nations cup, u don rise above trials, how dare you compare south America league wit Africa? south America teams beat their European counterparts in world cup (Sao Paulo beat Liverpool in 04, while Corinthians beat Chelsea last year) and u want to compare it with 67-0 and 79-0.... oboabona shld swallow his pride, he's not better than yaya toure.... that Bernard traore @ Chelsea is full international for Burkina Faso and he's still under trial

Oboabona, a world class player indeed! If that is your assertion, then it is absolutely wrong. I think the guy needs more exposure. After all, beating a low rated Burkina Faso by a lone goal is not enough by a good formidable team. It conspiciously reflected in the confederation cup that we are not yet good enough. We are still at African level we need to go beyond that.
