This story, beloved for its revelation of God's mercy toward sinners, is found only in John. It was almost certainly not part of John's original Gospel. By this standard, would it be OK for me to make up a story now about Jesus and have it added into the bible? Just as the inventor of the "Woman caught in Adultery" story made up this story to make a point, I would be equally justified in making one up to make a moral or theological point.
